听力原文:M: Are you going to the demonstration to help stop the spread of nuclear weapons
tomorrow, Cleo?

W: No, Simon. I hate demonstrations. I have heard the police will be standing by with tear gas.

M: Yes, but North Korea boasts it has nuclear arms.

W: One hundred ninety countries have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but the issues are just too complex. There are two sides to every story. I don't understand it and I have no intention of going to a demonstration. [19] Demonstrations don't seem to accomplish anything anyway.

M: [19] Several demonstrations have changed politician's minds throughout history. As a responsible citizen I think it is important to stand up for what you believe in.

W: Leave it to someone else. As I said, if you listen to both sides of a story, both sides have some good points. [20] Why should I demonstrate and risk getting hurt for something that I am not even sure is fight?

M: You are not likely to get hurt. This will be a peaceful demonstration. I have spoken to the organizer for the university group. He insists that this will be peaceful. He advocates if you want world peace, peace begins at home—and that means right here in this city.

W: [20]/[21]You go if you want, Simon, but I plan to study for my physics exam.

M: It would only take two hours of your day. The bus leaves the campus at 11:30 and leaves downtown to return to campus at 12:45. You could eat your lunch on the bus.

W: [20]/[21]I am not going, Simon. [21] Why don't you ask the students in your political science class this after noon if they want to go?

M: They are all going.

W: Okay, Simon. I need to meet my sister for coffee now.

M: Bye then. See you in physics class tomorrow.

(20)

听力原文: In one way of thinking, failure is a part of life. In another way, failure may be a way towards success. The "spiderstory" is often told. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider spinning a web. The spider tried to reach across a rough place in the rock. He tried six times to span the gap. On the seventh time, he made it and went on to spin his web. Bruce is said to have taken heart and to have gone on to defeat the English.

Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one. Once he was asked why he kept on trying to make a new type of battery when he had failed so often. He replied,

"Failure? 1 have no failures. Now, I know 50,000 ways that it won' t work."

So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were conditions right? Were you in top form. yourself? What can you change so that things may go right next time?

Second, is the goal you're trying to reach the right one? Try to do some titivating about what your real goals may be. Think about this question, "If I do succeed in this, where will it gel me?" This may help you prevent failure in things you shouldn' t be doing anyway.

The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to live with yourself even though you may have failed. Remember, you can't win them all .

(33)

A.Failure and success.

B.The "spider-story".

C.Two sides of failure.

D.The invention of the light bulb.

听力原文: Last time, we outlined how the Civil War finally got started. I want to talk tod
ay about the political management of the war on both sides: the north under Abraham Lincoln and the south under Jefferson Davis. An important task for both of these presidents was to justify for their citizens just why the war was necessary.

In 1861, on July 4th, Lincoln gave his first major speech in which he presented the northern reasons for the war. It was, he said, to preserve democracy. Lincoln suggested that this war was a noble crusade that would determine the future of democracy throughout the world. For him the issue was whether or not this government of the people, by the people could maintain its integrity, could it remain complete and survive its domestic foes. In other words, could a few discontented individuals and by that he meant those who led the southern rebellion, could they arbitrarily break up the government and put an end to free government on earth? The only way for the nation to survive was to crush the rebellion.

At the time, he was hopeful that the war wouldn't last long and the slave owners would be put down forever, but he underestimated how difficult the war would be. It would be harder than any the Americans had thought before or since, largely because the north had to break the will of the southern people, not just by its army. But Lincoln rallied northerners to a deep commitment to the cause. They came to perceive the war as a kind of democratic crusade against southern society.

What is the talk mainly about?

A.Advantages of the North in the Civil War.

B.Civilian opposition to the Civil War.

C.Reasons to justify fighting the Civil War.

D.Military strategy used in the Civil War.

听力原文: When I was in British Columbia last July working at the department's archaeological dig, I saw the weirdest rainbow. At first I couldn't believe my eyes because the bands of color I saw weren't in a single half circle across the sky. Instead, I saw a full circle of rainbow hues hanging in the sky just above the sea. Inside the circle there was a big white disc and above the circle there was another round band of colors forming a halo. There were curved legs of multicolored light coming off the sides of the circles. It was an incredible sight.

I ran back to our main camp and tried to get our cook to come with me to see my fantastic find before it disappeared. He just laughed at my exciting story and told me that what I saw was nothing special.., just some "sun dogs". He said I'd be sure to see many more before I left. And sure enough, I did. When I got back from the dig I asked Professor Clark about the "sun dogs," and she's going to tell us more about them.

26. Why was the student in British Columbia?

27.What did the student find so unusual about the "rainbow" he saw?

28.What was inside the large circle?

29.What did the cook say about the phenomenon the student had seen?

30.What did the cook call the phenomenon?

(31)

A.To study its geography.

B.To help at an archaeological dig.

C.To take a vacation with friends.

D.To do research for a physics project.
