Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: Football is the most popular game in England: one has only logo to one of the important matches to see this. Rich or poor, young or old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other. To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams; he has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he expects will win such and such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age. Most schools in England take football seriously—much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all that important, and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy's mind with facts in the classroom, education also means the training of character; and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, instead of working for himself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is every school's game in England.

(27)

A.People of all age like watching football.

B.Children know a lot about football.

C.People all shout for the team they support.

D.Football is the most popular game in England.

Most dictionaries will tell you a number of【21】about a language. There are three things in
particular that【22】important. These three things are spelling, pronunciation, and meanings.

The first and most obvious thing is that a dictionary will【23】you the spelling of a word. If you're not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order--a, b, e, and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word "poor"--p, o, o, r--comes before "poverty"--p, o, v, e, r, t, y and the word "poverty" comes【24】the word "power"--p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical order.

The second thing a dictionary will tell you is【25】. Most dictionaries give the pronunciation of a word in a special kind of alphabet. This special alphabet is called a phonetic, or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you generally【26】a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

The【27】thing a dictionary will tell you is the meanings of words. You can【28】a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will explain all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the common word "get" has over 20 different meanings. The meaning, of course,【29】the sentence in which the word is used.

These three things--spelling, pronunciation, and meanings--are some of the important【30】that you learn from dictionaries.

听力原文: To most foreigners, especially those from the eastern world, such as Chinese and Japanese, cricket seems a dreadfully boring game. But English people think the sound of a wooden cricket ball striking a wooden cricket bat is just about the most beautiful sound in the town.

The all-England cricket team is the most important one. Its players, who may be either amateur or professional, are chosen from the country cricket teams. The most important international matches are those played between England and Australia, and are held one year in one country, the next year in the other. While these matches are being played, if an Englishman says; "The news is terrible", he does not mean that an international disaster has occurred--but merely that England is not doing well at cricket.

But to see real English cricket, a visitor should go to watch a village team. On Saturday and Sunday summer afternoons, on driving into any village; he is certain to hear the crack of a bat hitting a ball. Then presently he will come to a field or village green. All around it, sitting on the ground, on benches, or in their cars, are the people of the neighborhood. They are not saying much, but their eyes are fixed on the cricket pitch.

(4)

A.Country cricket teams.

B.University cricket teams.

C.High school cricket teams.
