听力原文: The expression,“lame duck”,call be heard in almost any American town or city, esp
ecially where people discuss politics. Most often, they use it to describe a politician who has come to the end of his power.

There are a number of ideas as to where“lame duck”came from, though the picture of a lame duck is clear enough:a duck that has had its wings cut,or its feet injured, and can no longer walk like a healthy one.

The term seems to have come into the American language after the Civil War of 1861-1865.One explanation is that it came from the language of hunters who felt that it was foolish to waste powder or time on a dead duck. And a lame duck is close to being a dead duck.

Another explanation, however,is that the expression came from England. There it was used to describe a man who lost all his money and could not pay his debts. He could do nothing but walk like a lame duck. And people showed little mercy for the poor fellow.

But in the United States people took the phrase to describe congressman who failed to get re-elected but still had a little time left in office.

Later, the expression was used in a broader sense, generally describing any man whose days of power were coming to an end.It has often been used to describe the position of an American president in the last two years or so of his second term.It is a difficult time for him, when Congress is ready to oppose him at every turn.

Where Can the expression“lame duck”be heard?

A.Only among hunters.

B.Among primary school pupils.

C.Among beautiful ladies.

D.Among people who are discussing politics.

"Wash every day and you'll die young, my son!" People often said those words; long ago, of
course. Napoleon's wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath. ("It's quicker," She always said). Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor; "Soap and water have never touched my body." (And the doctor answered. "That's true. I know... ")

why didn't people wash in those days long ago?

Well, they did not have water in their house. They carried water from rivers or from holes in the ground (= wells). Towns people bought it from a water--carrier. Sometimes it was expensive; and soap was always expensive. They drank water, of course; and so they were clean inside. They did not think about the outside! And this is true; they just did not like a bath.

Modern life is different. We use a lot of soap and water. And we are all quite clean. However, a few people use too much soap; and they often get ill. Who are these people?

Many young women work as hairdressers. They wash and then "dress" other women's hair. That is their job, and they like it. Young hairdressers sometimes wash dirty heads on a busy day! Their hands are soapy for seven or eight hours; and that is not a good thing. A young hairdresser's hands are often red and ugly; and she must then go to doctor.

Long ago, people ______.

A.often died young

B.did not often have a bath

C.washed every day

D.washed every day and died young

When he was young, Jacob Lawrence often walked more than sixty blocks from his home in the
Harlem section of New York City to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jacob wanted to be an artist, and he believed that studying the famous painting hanging in that museum would help him.

The year was 1930. The depression (经济萧条) had brought hard times.

As he walked through Harlem, Jacob noticed the people on the sidewalks. He looked hard at the churches, the funeral parlors and barbershops. Jacob stored those images in his mind, along with the images of paintings he saw in the museum.

Jacob came from a poor family. His mother believed there was little chance that her son could grow up to be a successful painter. She wanted him to aim for something more practical. But Jacob's teacher in an after-school art program saw that the youngster was talented. Alston showed him how to use poster paints and crayons (蜡笔) to make masks and stage sets.

As time passed, Alston let Jacob rent work space in his own studio. That was an exciting place for a young black man struggling to become an artist. Many creative people gathered there to talk about art and literature and history.

From these conversations, Jacob learned that history books often ignored the accomplishments of African Americans. He decided to paint a series of pictures dramatizing the story of a black hero. He chose Toussaint, a slave from the Caribbean island of Haiti, who had helped free his people from French ruling.

Many people admired Jacob's pictures, but he needed more than admiration. To help his family, he often had to work at jobs that took him away from painting. Then something encouraging happened. The government set up the Federal Art Project to help struggling artists survive the depression, and a sculptor (雕刻家) named Augusta got Jacob a job with the project. For eighteen months, Jacob was paid a salary to paint pictures. For the first time, he felt like a professional artist.

All of the following are TRUE about Jacob EXCEPT that ______.

A.he often visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art on foot when he was young

B.he grew up in poor circumstances

C.he took art classes in art programs

D.his mother loved him and supported him to become an artist

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.

For most Americans, the word "poverty" suggests destitution: an inability to provide a family with nutritious food, clothing, and reasonable shelter. But only a small number of the 35 million persons classified as "pour" by the Census Bureau fit that description.

While the poor are generally well-nourished, some poor families do experience hunger, meaning a temporary discomfort due to food shortages. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13 percent of poor families and 2.6 percent of poor children experience hunger at some point during the year. In most cases, their hunger is short-term. Eighty-nine percent of the poor report their families have "enough" food to eat, while only 2 percent say they "often" do not have enough to eat.

The typical American defined as poor by the government has a car, air conditioning, a refrigerator, a stove, a clothes washer and dryer, and a microwave. He has two color televisions, cable or satellite TV reception, a VCR or DVD player, and a stereo. He is able to obtain medical care. His home is in good repair and is not overcrowded. By his own report, his family is not hungry and he had sufficient funds in the past year to meet his family's essential needs. While this individual's life is not well-off, it is equally far from the popular images of frightening poverty conveyed by the press.

For most Americans, a "poor" man is the person who ______.

B.call not afford a lot of food

C.has no rich material wealth

D.has no work

E.has no money
