In the absence of major catastrophes, there will be more than twice as many inhabitants in the world by the year 2000 as there are today. (49) The greatest threat to the well-being of mankind is this explosive population growth rate. One third of the world&39; s population receivers less than 2,000 kcal/ head/day. Agricultural production is hampered by had climates, soil erosion, lack of fertilizers, antiquated farming methods, political upheavals and war. This situation will steadily deteriorate unless national programs of population control and family planning based on modern contraceptive techniques are evolved and effectively put into operation.
