Passage Four:Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Although April did not

bring us the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn’t generally experience the atmospheric sound and lightning that can accompany those rains, it’s still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.

The reason these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, did you know that the lightning we see flashing down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes trick us into thinking we see a downward motion when it’s actually the other way around. But then, if we believed only what we think we see, we’d still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.

Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two cloud or between earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there’s enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on earth every second.

Parents can use thunder and lightning to help their children learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of the lightning flashing reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval between the flash and the crash to learn how close they were to the actual spark.

Passage 4 To effectively use this washing machine, you must complete four steps carefully, loading(装载) the clothes, pouring in the detergent (洗涤剂), adjusting the water temperature, and putting in the coins. First, throw clothes of similar color into the machine; for example, whites, colored clothes, and towels should be washed separately. While completing this step, you must be careful not to overload the machine. Second, you should read the directions on your detergent box to find out the correct amount for your particular load. Next, select one of three possible water temperatures, hot, warm, or cold. Generally, hot temperature is used for white clothes, warm temperature for light colored clothes, and cold temperature for dark or brightly colored clothes. Finally, after closing the door of the washing machine, put in the proper amount of money. In summary, by following these simple directions, the washer will give you a clean load of wet clothes. 题目: Why should you follow the directions carefully when using the machine? 【其它】Passage One Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage。 Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty scary。 We know the risk of dementia (痴呆) increases with age。 But if you have memory slips, you probably needn’t worry。 There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss。 After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and thing quickly, says Dr。 Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston。 The brain ages just like the rest of the body。 Certain parts shrink, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning。 Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain。 And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow。 Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about。 But if you forget the plot of the movie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says。 When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved。” Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong。 But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic。 There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of Defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive (认知的) reserve, Daffner says。 “Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways,” he says。 In other words, keep your brain busy and working。 And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster。 46。 Why does the author say that one needn’t be concerned about memory slips? A) Not all of them are symptoms of dementia。 B) They occur only among certain groups of people。 C) Not all of them are related to one’s age。 D) They are quite common among fifty-year-olds。 47。 What happens as we become aged according to the passage? A) Our interaction skills deteriorate。 B) Some parts of our brain stop functioning。 C) Communication within our brain weakens。 D) Our whole brain starts shrinking。 48。 Which memory-related symptom should people take seriously? A) Totally forgetting how to do one’s daily routines。 B) Inability to recall details of one’s life experiences。 C) Failure to remember the names of movies or actors。 D) Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends。 49。 What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up? A) Check the brain’s cognitive reserve。 C) Turn to a professional for assistance。 B) Stop medications affecting memory。 D) Exercise to improve their well-being。 50。 What is Dr Daffner’s advice for combating memory loss? A) Having regular physical and mental checkups。 B) Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain。 C) Engaging in known memory repair activities。 D) Staying active both physically and mentally。 20分一题

Passage Four Questions 16 and 20 are based on the following passage. Effective Friday, Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has declared a strike against 11 video game publishers over games that went into production after Feb. 17, 2015. The companies include some of the heavyweights of the industry, like Electronic Arts Productions, Insomniac Games, Activision and Disney. The strike comes in light of an unsuccessful 19 months of negotiations after the existing labor contract known as the Interactive Media Agreement expired in late 2014. Overall, the strike is an effort to provide more secondary compensation along with other concerns, such as transparency upon hiring talent and on-set (制作中) safety precautions. The video gaming industry has ballooned in recent years. The Los Angeles Times reports that the industry is in the midst of an intense increase in cash flow. In 2015, gaming produced $23.5 billion in domestic revenue. But SAG-AFTRA says voice actors don’t receive residuals (追加酬金) for their gaming work. Instead, they receive a fixed rate, which is typically about $825 for a standard four-hour vocal session. So the voice actors are pushing for the idea of secondary compensation — a performance bonus every time a game sells 2 million copies or downloads, or reaches 2 million subscribers, with a cap at 8 million. “It’s a very small number of games that would trigger this secondary compensation issue,” said voice actor Crispin Freeman, who’s a member of the union’s negotiating committee. “This is an important aspect of what it means to be a freelance (从事自由职业的) performer, who isn’t regularly employed every single day working on projects.” Another major complaint from the actors is the secrecy of the industry. “I can’t imagine if there’s any other acting job in the world where you don’t know what show you’re in, when you’re hired,” says voice actor Keythe Farley, who chairs the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. “And yet that happens every day in the video game world,” Farley told reporters during a press conference Friday. “I was a main character in Fallout 4, a character by the name of Kellogg, and I never knew that I was doing vocal recording for that game throughout the year and a half.” Scott Witlin, the lawyer representing the video game companies, says voice actors “represent less than one tenth of 1 percent of the work that goes into making a video game.” So “even though they’re the top craftsmen in their field,”Witlin says, “if we pay them under a vastly different system than the people who do the 99.9 percent of the work, that’s going to create far more problems for the video game companies.” 20. What is the argument of lawyer Scott Witlin?

A、Voice actors should have a pay raise if they prove to be top craftsmen.

B、Changing the pay system would cause the industry more problems.

C、Voice actors are mere craftsmen, not professional performers

D、Paying voice actors on an hourly basis is in line with the law.
