Read the following passage and tell if the statements are true, false or not given. Holiday home When we went on holiday last year to a small town near London, my father knew all the landmarks. He knew that we had to turn right at the big church in the middle of town to find the road that finally led to our holiday house. He knew that there was a supermarket near our holiday house. He knew that to get to the swimming pool all we had to do was just go around the corner from our house and cycle two kilometers. He told us all this before we even got to the town. But the amazing thing was that he had never been to this town before. He knew more details than a map would show. He knew, for example, that the name of the supermarket was Cresco. He informed us that the house next to our holiday home had a red door, cats and at least one child. How did he know all this? He said that he had looked at Google Street View in order to find out what the town was like before deciding that this was a good place to spend the summer holidays. He even knew that there was a golf course and an indoor climbing center in or near the town. We knew that there were bikes at the holiday house so my father checked whether there were bike paths. He said that there were plenty of bike paths and we could reach almost every place without cycling on the roads although, he added, there was not that much traffic. Shtatement: The house had bicycles the family could use.

Read carefully the chosen excerpt and then write your response in NO LESS THAN 200 words, in which you should: 1) summarize the main message of the report, and then 2) comment on Brewer’s view that parents should join in with their kids rather than limit their media consumption. You can support yourself with information from the report. How much screen time is too much for kids? Parents have been advised to limit media consumption of their children, but research suggests it’s the nature of it that matters. For many parents in the digital age, battles with their kids over screen time and devices have become a depressing part of family life. Many parents will now be relieved to hear that recent research suggests that it’s not so much the length, but the nature of the screen time that matters. Jocelyn Brewer, a psychologist who specializes in the concept of “digital nutrition”, likens media diets to what’s on our plates: rather than counting calories (or screen time), think about what you’re eating. “It’s not just about whether you consume any potential digital junk foods, but also your relationship to technology and the role it plays in your family life,” says Brewer. For young children, the most important thing is whether parents and kids are playing, watching or browsing together. A study of 20,000 parents published late last year by the Oxford Internet Institute and Cardiff University determined that there was no correlation between limiting device use and children’s well-being. The study’s lead author Dr Andrew Pryzbylski said: “Our findings suggest the broader family context how parents set rules about digital screen time, and if they’re actively engaged in exploring the digital world together, are more important than the raw screen time.” “The consensus is that screen time, in and of itself, is not harmful — and reasonable restrictions vary greatly, depending on a child’s behavior and personality. There is little point in worrying about how many minutes a day your kids are spending with screens,” says Brewer. “Instead, parents should be doing what they can to ensure that what they’re watching, playing and reading is high-quality, age-appropriate and safe — and joining in wherever possible.”

The following sentences are taken from a report on Global Greenhouse Gas Emissions Data. The pie chart shows the emissions by countries. Identify the corresponding stages of the sentences describing the pie chart and re-order them to make the description logical.Source: Boden, T.A., Marland, G., and Andres, R.J. (2015). National CO2 Emissions from Fossil-Fuel Burning, Cement Manufacture, and Gas Flaring: 1751-2011, Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy, doi 10.3334/CDIAC/00001_V2015 ❶ These data include CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion, as well as cement manufacturing and gas flaring. ❷ Together, these sources represent a large proportion of total global CO2 emissions. ❸ In areas such as the United States and Europe, changes in land use associated with human activities have the net effect of absorbing CO2, partially offsetting the emissions from deforestation in other regions. ❹ In 2011, the top carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters were China, the United States, the European Union, India, the Russian Federation, Japan, and Canada. ❺ However, changes in land use can be important: estimates indicate that net global greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use were over 8 billion metric tons of CO2 equivalent, or about 24% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. ❻ Emissions and sinks related to changes in land use are not included in these estimates. Order the sentences in the following form: 2-3-1-4...
