M: I first became interested in do-it-yourself several years ago. You see, my son Paul is disabled. He's in a wheelchair and I just had to make alterations to the house.
W: Have you had any experience of this kind of work?
M: No. I got a few books from the library but they didn't help very much. Then I decided to go to evening classes so that I could learn basic carpentry and electrics.
W: What sort of changes did you make to the house?
M: First of all, practical things to help Paul. Just imagine the problems a disabled person would have in your house. We need a large house with wide corridors so that Paul could get from one room to another. We didn't have much money and we had to buy this one. It's over ninety years old and it was in a very bad state of repair.
W: Where did you begin?
M: The electrics. I completely rewired the house so that Paul could reach all the switches.
W: What else did you do?
M: By the time I'd altered everything for Paul, do-it-yourself had become a hobby. I really enjoyed doing things with my hands.
W: What are you working on now?
M: I've just finished the kitchen. Now I'm building an extension so that Paul will have a large room on the ground floor where he can work.
W: There's a $10,000 prize for the Do-it-yourself competition. How are you going to spend it?
M: I'm hoping to start my own business so that I can convert ordinary houses for disabled people. I think I've become an expert on the subject.

When he got up in the morning, it looked, as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard the fire was a bad one:three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the buildings so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. The man of the Tower told him that the fire had started in a baker's shop in Pudding Lane; the baker's house had caught fire from the overheated oven and then the flames had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. So began the Great Fire of London, a fire that lasted nearly five days, destroyed most of the old city and ended, so it is said, at Pie Corner.

Pepys and his wife had asked some friends to dinner on Sunday, September 2nd, 1666. (2) They were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o'clock on the Sunday morning, its glow had become so bright that Jane woke her husband to watch it. Pepys slipped on his dressing-gown and went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked, as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them.

听力原文:W:Do you enjoy your work? Do you enjoy meeting people?
M:Yes.Sometimes.I've got to be honest.Sometimes.
W:So,some people you like and some you don't?
M:Yeah,it’s like a lot of things, meeting the general public. You get good days, and you get bad days. But I do enjoy the job.I like the freedom of the job, being self-employed.
W:Do you ever get difficult passengers?
M:Yes,sometimes.
W:What sort of things do they get up to?
M:I would say sometimes a lot of difficult passengers are people who don't go in cabs a lot and they're unfamiliar with procedures.especially if you work nights.People drinking or the extras that would be included on the tariff after a certain time of night.
W:You mean they argue with you over money?
M:Yes,that can happen.Or the way…the good thing is,people can argue about the way that you go on a certain route because they always know better. But nine times out of ten the route that they take you on is far longer so,you know, they're the eventual losers.
W:So if you do have a difficult passenger you want to get rid of.what do you do?
M:I'd stop the cab and tell them to get out.
W:Does that often happen?
M:Mmm,it's happened to me three times. And they've got out.So I,I myself haven't had a lot of problems with difficult people, you know.
W:When you pick up tourists as passengers, what kind of places do they like to go to?
M:I suppose the most famous landmark is Buckingham Palace.the Tower of London, maybe Harrods;but certainly Buckingham Palace.
What does the man do?
A.A taxi-driver.
B.A bus driver.

听力原文:W: Wake up, Eric, time to rise and shine.
M: Ha, oh, hi, Jane, I must have fallen asleep while I was reading.
W: You and everyone else. It looks more like a campground, than a library.
M: Well, the dorm's too noisy to study in, and I guess this place is too quiet.
W: Have you had any luck finding a topic for your paper?
M: No, Prof Grant told us to write about anything in cultural anthropology. For once I wish she had not given us so much of a choice.
W: Well, why net write about the ancient civilizations of Mexico. You seem to be interested in that part of the world.
M: I am, but there is too much material to cover. I'll be writing forever, and Grant only wants five to seven pages.
W: So then limit it to one region of Mexico, Say the Uka town. You've been there and you said it's got lots of interesting relics.
M: That's not a bad idea. I brought many books and things back with me last summer, that would be great resource material, now if I can only remember where I put them.
