Each semester, Andrew Tom receives a term bill outlining his expenses: tuition, dorm fee,

student center fee, recreation fee, resident activity fee, health insurance. If only the rest of his expenses were as easy to quantify.

"It's like you start out the semester with plenty of money and then $20 for dinner out here and $100 at the department store there, it's gone," said Tom, a Northeastern University third-year student. "And there are so .many things you need like toothpaste or laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that you don't think about until you get here and need it."

From the books lining their shelves to the fashionable clothes filling their closets, college students say the expenses of a college education go well beyond tuition and a dining hall meal plan. Many say they arrive on campus only to be overwhelmed by unexpected costs from sports fees to the actual price of a slice of pizza.

Balancing a job with schoolwork, especially at colleges known for their heavy workloads like Harvard and MIT, can be tough. So can the pressure students often feel to financially keep pace with their friends.

"When you get dragged along shopping, you're going to spend money; if you get dragged to a party and everyone wants to take a cab but you're cheap and want to take a bus. Chances are you'll end up sharing the fee for the cab," said Tom. "I guess you could say no, but no one wants to be the only one eating in the snack bar while your friends are our to dinner."

Max Cohen, a biology major at MIT, said he is accustomed to watching fellow students spend $40 a night to have dinner delivered or $50 during a night out at a bar. During the school's recent spring break, friends on trips for the week posted away messages that read like a world map—Paris, Rome, Tokyo. "Meanwhile I stay home and work," said Cohen. "I didn't realize when I came here how much money I would spend or how hard I would have to work to get by."

It is a lesson some younger students learn quickly. Others, surrounded by credit card offers, go into debt, or worse, are forced to leave school.

"A lot of people don't think twice about how much they spend," said a first-year student at MIT, "and you feel the pressure sometimes to go along with them."

The sentence "If only the rest of his expenses were as easy to quantify." (Lines 2-3, Paragraph 1) implies that ______.

A.there are many other unexpected expenses

B.it is easy to calculate how much more to spend

C.the tuition is too high to be calculated

D.he has to pay only a few other expenses

Listening out for whale song is one way that ships can avoid colliding with whales. But wh
at do you do if the whales aren't singing? One answer, developed by researchers in the Canary Islands, is to focus on the way the giant creatures mask the clamour of ocean noise.

No one knows how many whales are killed by ships each year, but collisions are thought to ac- count for up to a third of unnatural deaths. For the northern right whale, this means one or two individuals every year, and with only 300 animals left, that's an unacceptable loss. There are three global hot spots for whale collisions: northern right whales are at risk in the Atlantic off the east coast of the US and Canada, fin whales in the Mediterranean, and sperm whales off the Canary Islands.

Last year, the Massachusetts-based international Fund for Animal Welfare attached hydro- phones to buoys and successfully listened out for right whale song in the North Atlantic. But since right whales remain silent for hours at a time, and sperm whales are silent for around haft the time, a better tracking technology is needed.

The new Whale Anti-Collision System (WACS), developed by Michel Andre, is designed to help ships in these hot spots steer clear of the whales. It uses a sonar technique called ambient noise imaging to locate the animals even when they are silent.

To do this, Andre has been testing a long lines of buoys, each bristling with 32 sensitive under- water microphones, or hydrophones, that pick up sea sounds such as breaking waves, rain and ship- ping noise. Any approaching whale blocks this background noise and creates a detectable "sound shadow".

By comparing the reflections received from the hydrophones on different buoys, Andre's system can gather enough information to work out the whale' s position and how fast it is moving. Software displays the results, on a 3D colour map. Underwater objects stand out like hot spots on a thermal image. In trials planned for next year, Andre will place two lines of 12 spherical buoys along the 120-kilometre ferry route between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The signals will be sent to a land station where they will be analysed to create a 3D picture of the sea in real time.

If the trials are successful, the WACS software could be installed aboard ferries so that ships' masters can steer clear of whales. Failing that, the whales' movements could be tracked from shore- based installation and radioed to ships in the area.

The loss of one or two northern fight whales every year is considered an unaeeeptable loss because they ______.

A.are the only Whales that can sing songs

B.are the only whales capable of masking the clamour of ocean noise

C.provide clues to scientists to study sea currents and waves

D.are on the very verge of distinction

Hillside Secondary School year is divided into two 18-week semesters. Semester one runs fr
om September to the end of January. Semester two runs from February to late June.

The school day runs from 8:45a. m. to 3: 15p.m. and is made up of five 78-minute periods. Students take four classes and have one period for lunch.

In February, 2000, the school introduced a new system of computerized attendance in order to provide accurate(准确的)records of student lates and absences and to enable communication with parents.

Student evaluation(评价) is a continual process based upon class performance, tests, home work and reports, as well as special projects or formal examinations held at the end of the semester. There will be at least three reports to parents during each semester. After five weeks of class, students carry Earlybird Report home. The semester one Parent/Teacher interview date appears on this report. Mid-term Report is at the ninth week. Marks are then calculated. Mid-term Reports are prepared and mailed in mid-November and late April. Students with marks under 60% after 11 weeks of class will receive an In-Danger Report to remind them that more effort is required as well as careful preparation for final exams. Those notices are mailed home. Final Reports are mailed home in February and July.

The Newsletter is an excellent way for the school to communicate with parents. In addition to providing a profile of our many activities, it contains key dates and information-upcoming events such as parent interviews or exams, changes being considered at the school. Messages from school, parents receive four newsletters each year.

Keep it on the refrigerator!

Each semester, the parents may get at least ______ from the school.

A.an Early-bird Report, a Mid-term Report and the Newsletters

B.an Early-bird Report, a Mid-term Report and the Final Report

C.a Mid-term Report, an In-Danger Report and the Final Report

D.a Mid-term Report, a Final Report and Newsletters

The Language Learning Theory course is an option during the third semester of your program
. It is an introduction to aspects of Psycholinguistics and Second Language Acquisition Research. The course will deal specifically with those aspects of recent research that are relevant to the comprehension and production of spoken language. Most of the course will, in other words, be spent considering the processes involved in understanding and producing spoken language. At each stage, we shall be relating the implications of recent research and theories to the practice of foreign language teaching. The course aims to provide relevant background for all language teachers who are interested in WHY and HOW current teaching approaches have been developed.

The course will be held during the first ten weeks of this semester from 8: 30 to 10: 30 on Tuesday mornings.

A handout giving an outline of the topics of each of the ten sessions is available for those who wish to consider the course in more detail.

The course will be principally conducted through lecture and seminar. Learners will, at times, be asked to take part in small language experiments. Handouts and worksheets will be distributed each week. Preparatory reading and follow-up reading will be required for each session.

Learners' participation in class activities will be taken into consideration. Attendance at classes is essential. There will be four short, assessed assignments during the course. Participation in classes will account for 10% of the final mark. Assignments will account for 60%. The remaining 30% is for the final test—which will be held one week after the end of the course.

You may collect the handout (covering the information I have given you today) from me at the end of this session. If you need further details, you are welcome to ask me personally or see the secretary in Room 513. The course code is LLT 96.

Students who are interested in______are most UNLIKELY to take this course?

Normally a student must attend a certain number of...

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives a credit which may matter toward a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical eourse eonsists of three elasses per week for fifteen weeks;while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester, Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semester seach year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course. though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course followed a student is given a grade. which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers, All this imposes a constant pressure affair. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective word of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academie authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the tules, for example, by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to a later career.

Normally a student would at least attend_____classes each week.

B.20

C.12
