y, but school has been really busy these days, and I havent had time to relax. W: By the way, whats your major anyway? M: Hotel Management. W: Well, what do you want to do once you graduate? M: Uh...I havent decided for sure, but I think Id like to work for a hotel or travel agency in this area. How about you? W: Well, when I first started college, I wanted to major in French, but I realised I might have a hard time finding a job using the language, so I changed my major to computer science. M: Yeah. I work three times a week at a restaurant near the campus. W: Oh. What do you do there? M: Im a cook. W: How do you like your job? M: Its okay. The other workers are friendly, and the pay isnt bad. Questions 9 to 12 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 9. What does the man want to do after he graduates? 10. 听力原文:M: Excuse me, I was wondering if it was possible to join the library. W: Are you
a student in our college? M: No, Im not. But I heard that it was possible to join. W: Thats right. The 18 years of age is the minimum joining age. M: Yes, I am. Could you tell me what I have to do to join it? W: Well, you need to fill out some forms. You will also need to bring two passport photos with you. We also need two documents for ID, so a driving license would be fine. M: Good. Does it cost anything to join? W: Well, its free for students here but otherwise it is 125 pounds per year or 25 pounds when youve got acurrent student card from another college. M: I was at West College until last year, but now Ive got a job. But it is too expensive. W: But you will find more range of reference books or facilities which we bought for our students. M: I see. How many books can I borrow? W: We allow twelve items borrowed one time if youre a student, and that includes CDs, DVDs and videos. However, its only eight items for members of the public. M: And what happens if I return them late? W: Like all libraries, there is a fine system in place. The minimum fine is 1.5 pounds but it can be much higher for some items up to 5 pounds. We will give you a booklet with all the details when you join. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 13. What is the basic requirement for joining the library? 14. On the first day of school one of my classmates began a talk with me that changed my life.
She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. Im eighty-seven years old. " "Why are you in college at such an age?" I asked. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now Im getting one!" she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and Ill never forget what she taught us. She cleared her throat and began: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor each and every day. Youve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and they dont even know it! There is a giant difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and dont do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesnt take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually dont have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets. " She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose. " She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the years end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years before. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that its never too late to be all you can possibly be.

What is the meaning of "We became instant friends. " in Paragraph 4?

A.We became friends right away.

B.We never talked to each other after then.

C.We did not keep our friendship for a long time.

D.We often helped each other after making friends.

根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 Like most people, Ive long understood that I will be judged b
y my occupation, that my profession is a gauge people use to see how smart or talented I am. Recently, however, I was disappointed to see that it also decides how Im treated as a person. Last year I left a professional position as a small-town reporter and took a job waiting tables. As someone paid to serve food to people, I had customers say and do things to me I suspect theyd never say or do to their most casual acquaintances. One night a man talking on his cell phone waved me away, then beckoned (示意) me back with his finger a minute later, complaining he was ready to order and asking where Id been. I had waited tables during summers in college and was treated like apeon (勤杂工) by plenty of people. But at 19 years old, I believed I deserved inferior treatment from professional adults. Besides, people responded to me differently after I told them I was in college. Customers would joke that one day Id be sitting at their table, waiting to be served. Once I graduated I took a job at a community newspaper. From my first day, I heard a respectful tone from everyone who called me. I assumed this was the way the professional world worked--cordially. I soon found out differently. I sat several feet away from an advertising sales representative with a similar name. Our calls would often get mixed up and someone asking for Kristen would be transferred to Christie. The mistake was immediately evident. Perhaps it was because money was involved, but people used a tone with Kristen that they never used with me. My job title made people treat me with courtesy. So it was a shock to return to the restaurant industry. Its no secret that theres a lot to put up with when waiting tables, and fortunately, much of it can be easily forgotten when you pocket the tips. The service industry, by definition, exists to cater to others needs. Still, it seemed that many of my customers didnt get the difference between server and servant. Im now applying to graduate school, which means someday Ill return to a profession where people need to be nice to me in order to get what they want. I think Ill take them to dinner first, and see how they treat someone whose only job is to serve them. The author was disappointed to find that _______.

A.ones position is used as a gauge to measure ones intelligence

B.talented people like her should fail to get a respectable job

C.ones occupation affects the way one is treated as a person

D.professionals tend to look down upon manual workers

And it sounds pretty interesting. It involves helping with her study on learning style. You know, about how some people learn best by sight, while others learn best by hearing or touch. M: Yeah. I know thats her area of expertise. W: Right. Anyway for her study shes taking some high school students who arent doing very well in their classes and testing them to find out what their learning styles are. Then tutors, people like me, will work with them presenting material to them in their particular learning style. M: Hey. That is interesting. Now will you mostly do the testing or the tutoring? W: Both we hope. I want to be involved from start to finish. M: Are you getting paid for this? W: Im sure well get something, though probably not much. Anyway, it doesnt matter to me, I just want to have some hands-on experience. M: Yeah. And itll be nice to help those high school students, too. W: Thats what I thought when I saw the ad. You know, you could do it, too. You dont have to be in her classes to work on the study. M: Really? Do you have any idea what the schedule is like? W: Late afternoon, then evening for tutoring I think. After all, the kids are in regular classes until three thirty. M: Actually thats perfect for me. W: Then come along. We will save the lab report for later. But wed better make sure we do a good job on our experiment first. M: Yeah. First things first.
