It is entirely reasonable for auditors to believe that scientists who know exactly where they are going and how they will get there should not be distracted by the necessity of keeping one eye on the cash register while the other eye is on the microscope.

英译中

Those people whose only experience of Helen Keller is The Miracle Worker will be surprised to discover her many dimensions. "My work for the blind," she wrote, "has never occupied a center in my personality. My sympathies are with all who struggle for justice." She was a tireless activist for racial and sexual equality...She was complex. Her main message was and is, "We're like everybody else. We're here to be able to live a life as full as any sighted person's. And it's O.K. to be ourselves."

That means we have the freedom to be as extraordinary as the sighted. Helen Keller loved an audience and wrote that she adored "the warm tide of human life pulsing round and round me" That's why the stage appealed to her, why she learned to speak and to deliver speeches. And to feel the vibrations of music, of the radio, or the movement of lips.

discuss your attendance for a moment.

W: Gee, Dr. Livingston, I'm really sorry about missing yesterday.

M: Actually, it's been several days. Counting today, we've only had 6 classes, yet you've already missed 4. You won't be able to pass if you're constantly absent.

W: Sorry, I've been extremely busy.

M: Well, I hope you're ready for today's exam.

W: Today? I thought it vas Monday!

M: Read the syllabus, Janna; this is precisely what I'm talking about. You should either make an effort to attend, or you should consider withdrawing while it's still possible.

W: What do you mean?

M: Today's the final day you can withdraw and get a full refund.

W: Maybe I really should; what do you suggest?

M: I wish you could attend classes regularly; however, if you don't believe you're capable of tiffs, then don't waste your money.

W: Thanks, Dr. Livingston; I really appreciate your advice. If it's okay, I suppose I'll go ahead and drop the class.

M: It's entirely up to yon, but that might be best if you don't think things are going to change. Excuse me, the students are coming, and I’ve got to get ready for class. I wish you the very best of luck, Janna.

听力原文: Now I'd like to talk to you about the final exam. The exam will be held next Thursday, he last day of the exam week. Remember to bring two or three pens in case one is out of ink. Unlike the mid-term this test will not include multiple choice questions. It will consist entirely of essays. You'll have to answer three of the five essay questions. The exam will be comprehensive. This means you will be responsible for all of the subject matter we're covered in class. I would suggest you review the mid-term as well as the textbook and your class notes. The final will count for 50% of your grade in the course; the research project will count for 20%; and the mid-term 30%.

I'll be in my office almost all day on Tuesday of next week. If you run into any problem, please feel free to stop in. Good luck with your studying! I'll see you on Thursday.

There was a time when, if a lady got onto a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immedi
ately stand up and offer her his seat. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone gets off.

You can' t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you're likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she'll probably insist on paying her share of the bill.

It' s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man' s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.

What do gentlemen now do when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train?

A.They will stand up reluctantly.

B.They will offer her their seats after a while.

C.They will pretend not to see her.

D.They will get off the bus.

听力原文:M: I've just found the most useful device at that new outdoor store, a water puri
fier.

W: A water purifier! You want to carry even more equipment with you on our hiking trips?

M: If it is lightweight and saves work--yes! And this one fits that description.

W: Really? I bet it takes up a lot of room.

M: Not at all. It's a straw, much like the ones you use to drink a soda or a milkshake.

W: Really? That's small.

M: It's plastic and has a series of mineral and chemical filters that strain harmful microbes from water.

W: Yes, but how good a job can it do filtering the germs out of stagnant pond water, or water from lakes and streams?

M: It's fantastic. It makes the water entirely germ-free.

W: But what about salt or chemical pollutants? Does it clean them out?

M: No, it doesn't remove salt and chemicals. But these are really not major concerns when we're out hiking and camping.

W: Hm... How long will a straw last?

M: For about 100 gallons. But don't worry about measuring that large amount of water. There is a built- in safety feature. The mineral and chemical filters become clogged long before the limit is reached, and the straw then stops drawing water.

W: I think I'll go and get one for my camping trip this weekend.

(20)

A.Small and lightweight.

B.Solid and heavy.

C.Bulky but weightless.

D.Large but necessary.

听力原文:M: Can we make you an offer? We would like to run the campaign for four extra wee
ks.

W: Well, can we summarize the problem from our point of view? First of all, the campaign was late. It missed two important trade fairs. The ads also did not appear into key magazines. As a result, the campaign failed. Do you accept that summary of what happened?

M: Well, the delay wasn't entirely our fault. You did in fact make late changes to the specifications of the advertisements.

W: Hmm, actually, you were late with the initial proposals, so you had very little time. And in fact, we only asked for small changes.

M: Well, whatever. Can we repeat our offer to run the campaign for four extra weeks?

W: That's not really the point. The campaign missed two key trade fairs. Because of this, we're asking you either to repeat the campaign next year for free, or we only pay 50% of the fee for this year.

M; Could we suggest a 20% reduction to the fee together with the four-week sustention to the campaign?

W: We are not happy. We lost business.

M: I think we both made mistakes. The responsibility is on both sides.

W: Ok, let's suggest a new solution. How about a 40% cut in fee, or a free repeat campaign?

M: Well, let's take a break. We're not getting very far. Perhaps we should think about this.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

22. What do we learn about the man's company?

23. Why was the campaign delayed according to the man?

24. What did the woman propose as a solution to the problem?

25. What does the man suggest they do at the end of the conversation?

(25)

A.It publishes magazines.

B.It is engaged in product design.

C.It sponsors trade fairs.

D.It runs sales promotion campaigns.
