Instructions: A week ago, China Daily gave a short report on the new measures on waste sorting issued by the municipal government of Beijing. The policy requires all service providers to reduce their use of disposables. At the same time, its residents are urged to meet the four standards of garbage classification, and anybody who fails to follow the new policy will have to pay 200 renminbi or $28.50 as a penalty. Is there any similar waste-sorting policy implemented where you live? If yes, how are people carrying it out? Are there any problems? What do you think are the possible barriers to the implementation of the polity? Read the following report and choose your own topic, but it should be related to environmental protection and also suitable for a short essay written in only THREE hours. You should write an expository or argumentative essay in 600 words or more about the issue and follow the basic 5-paragraph essay structure, which includes a title, an introduction, 2~4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You are expected to present your points through a thesis statement in the introduction paragraph and illustrate or support the points in the body paragraphs. As it is an open-book exam, online research is allowed; however, please cite all your sources and manage the time efficiently. The Grading Rubrics for your reference: 1. Essay Structure (短文结构, 20 points); 2. Central idea/Thesis Statement (中心论点, 20 points); 3. Paragraph Development & Coherence (段落扩展及连贯性, 20 points); 4. Description, Exposition, and/or Reasoning (描述、说明和/或论证, 20 points); 5. Grammatical Accuracy and Variety (语法准确和多样性, 10 points); 6. Range of Vocabulary (词汇丰富程度, 10 points). Note: No more than 15 % of your essay is allowed to be written by or quoted from others; scholastic dishonesty is definitely not acceptable. The essay would deserve a "0" if proved of plagiarism (剽窃), e.g. 30% and more, or even the whole, of the essay found to be “copy-and-pasted” from others. In addition, please do NOT share your essay drafts or inform others about the exam form and content after you finish the examination so that everybody, including yourself, would have the same fair opportunity as everybody else. ----------------------- Beijing to levy fines on people who fail to properly sort waste By Xin Wen, China Daily Updated: November 28, 2019 http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2019-11/28/content_37526126.htm New measures also require reduced use of disposables by service providers Beijing residents who fail to meet garbage classification standards will face fines up to 200 yuan ($28.50) if they refuse to rectify, starting May 1 after a newly revised regulation was passed by the capital's legislative body on Wednesday. The oldest and simplest method, then of describing differences in personality was to class
ify people according to types. Such a system is called a Typology. A famous example of this method was set forth in Greece about the year 400 B. C.. A physician named Hippocrates theorized that there were four fluids, or humors, in the body. Corresponding to each humor, he believed, there existed a definite type of personality. The four humor were blood, yellow bile(胆汁), black bile, and phlegm(黏液). A person in whom all four humor were in perfect balance had a harmonious(和谐的)personality. If a person had too much blood, he was called sanguine, or cheerful and optimistic. Someone with too much yellow bile was choleric, or irritable and easily angered. Too much black bile made a person melancholy, or depressed and pessimistic. An oversupply of phlegm caused a human being to be phlegmatic, or slow and unfeeling. Scientists have long since discarded Hippocrates fluid theory. But the names of the humors, corresponding to these temperaments(气质), have survived and are still useful, to some extent, in describing personality. Other features of people, such as their faces and physiques, have also been used to classify personality. Today, however, personality theories and classifications may also include factors such as heredity, the environment, intelligence, and emotional needs. Psychology, biology, and sociology are involved in these theories. Because of the complexity of human personality, present-day theories are often very different from one another. Psychologists vary in their ideas about what is most important in determining personality.

This passage focuses on______.

A.the history of the system of typology

B.important factors in determining personality

C.personality theory and classification

D.important features of human beings

Oceanography has been defined as "the application of all sciences to the study of the sea"
. Before the nineteen century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work.

For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that question "What is at the bottom of the oceans?" had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Maury of the U.S. Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for information on this matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.

Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition, which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.

The proposal to lay a telegraph cable from Europe to America made oceanographic studies take on ______ .

A.an academic aspect

B.a military aspect

C.a business aspect

D.an international aspect
