听力原文: Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Par
is. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didnt have any other luggage. Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter. Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package. "Give this package to Jean-Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily," Tony said. "You dont have any luggage, right?" "Only this backpack," Brian answered. "You said I could bring one carry-on bag." "Thats right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip." "Thanks." Is Brian a criminal? Not at all. He is an air courier. And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air-courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air courier, but it is quick. Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air couriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isnt for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible about your travel plans, and dont mind wearing the same clothes for a week, it can be a great way to take a vacation! Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard. 22. Why was Brian wearing so many clothes for his travel? 23. What do we learn about an air couriers job from the passage? 24. Why do businesses choose the air-courier service according to the passage? 25. What is one of the disadvantages of travelling as an air courier?23.

A.He organises international flights for tourists.

B.He travels around the world with cheap tickets.

C.He delivers papers and packages to foreign countries.

D.He manages a business company in foreign countries.

Its an odd paradox: thanks to cell phones, PDAs and the Internet, weve never before been i
n touch and within reach of so many people. And yet, weve never been so lonely, either. Which is to say, our loneliness is largely something weve inflicted on ourselves through countless lifestyle. choices, many of them good, some even critical. But in the end, is it all worth it? What is lost when we have e-mail pals on the other side of the world, but dont know our own neighbors? Are bigger salaries, bigger cars, bigger homes worth the price of smaller social circles and diminished relationships? Our loneliness has costs: crime goes up when neighbors dont look out for each other. The burden on public services increases when were not helping each other out. And the din of an iPod is no substitute for genuine connection with another human being. Theres no easy way out of our collective loneliness, and no solutions that come without trade-offs. But some of those trade-offs are worth reconsidering, lest we consume our lives with the things that matter least, at the expense of those that matter most.

ice cream, and a piece of pizza from the refrigerator? W: No problem. Anything else? M: No, thats enough for now. Hey, our company is organizing a basketball team, and Im thinking about joining. What do you think? W: Humph! M: "Humph!" What do you mean by "Humph"? I was the starplayer in the university. With my help, our team once won the state championship five times in a row. W: Yeah, but that was some fifteen years ago. Look, I just dont want you to have a heart attack, running up and down the court. M: So, what are you suggesting? Should I just give up the idea? Im not that out of shape. W: You are not that out of shape? It has been at least 5 years since you played last. You ought to have a physical examination before you begin. M: Well, OK, Ill follow your advice. But dont fuss too much about my health. At least I had kept training for more than 15 years before graduating. W: Once you stopped exercises for some time, you should be careful when you plan to resume. Besides, you need to watch your diet and eat less fatty foods, like ice cream. You should try eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. Dont you think you are not as fit as before? M: Oh, yeah, youre probably right. From today on, all ice cream in our refrigerator belongs to you. I will never touch it. W: Good! And you should take up a little weight training to strengthen your muscles. M: Weight training? Come on! Is there anything else? W: Oh, you need to go to bed early instead of watching TV till midnight. M: Hey, youre starting to sound like my mother. W: No, I just love you, and I want you to be healthy and enjoy life. Questions 13 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 13. It could be argued that human beings are a species of animal. However, the unique charact

Its a modem problem: youre too busy to be disturbed by incessant phone calls so you turn y
our cell phone off. But if you dont remember to turn it back on when youre less busy, you could miss some important calls. If only the phone knew when it was wise to interrupt you, you wouldnt have to turn it off at all. Instead, it could let calls through when you are not too busy. A bunch of behavior. sensors and a clever piece of software could do just that, by analyzing your behavior. to determine if its a good time to interrupt you. If built into a phone, the system may decide youre too busy and ask the caller to leave a message or ring back later. James Fogarty and Scott Hudson at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania based their system on tiny microphones, cameras and touch sensors that reveal body language and activity. First they had to study different behaviors to find out which ones strongly predict whether your mind is interrupted. The potential "busyness" signals they focused on included whether the office doors were left open or closed, the time of day, if other people were with the person in question, how close they were to each other, and whether or not the computer was in use. The sensors monitored these and many factors while four subjects were at work. At intervals, the subjects rated how interruptible they were on a scale ranging from "highly inter-tuptible" to "highly not-interruptible". Their ratings were then correlated with the various behaviors. "It is a shotgun approach: we used all the indicators we could think of and then let statistics find out which were important," says Hudson. The model showed that using the keyboard, and talking on a landline or to someone else in the office correlated most strongly with how interruptible the subjects judged themselves to be. The computer was actually better than people at predicting when someone was too busy to be interrupted. Fogarty speculates that this might be because people doing the interrupting are inevitably biased towards delivering their message, whereas computers dont care. The first application for Hudson and Fogartys system is likely to be in an instant messaging system, followed by office phones and cellphones. "There is no technological roadblock to it being deployed in a couple of years," says Hudson.

A big problem facing people today is that______.

A.they must tolerate phone disturbances or miss important calls

B.they must turn off their phones to keep their homes quiet

C.they have to switch from a desktop phone to a cellphone

D.they are too busy to make phone calls

When people are struck by lightening, they fall to the ground as though they were struck b
y a severe blow to the head. After the shock they may remain unconscious, become semiconscious or be conscious but confused and dazed, at least for a time. Flashes of light may continue passing before their eyes, and blindness and deafness may follow. The nervous system may be badly affected, causing paralysis, pain in the limbs and even hemorrhage. There will be burns where the lightening passed through the body, and like all electrical bunts, they are often deep and sever. All persons, especially campers and hunters, should know how to give first aid to someone who has been struck by lightening. Do not be afraid to touch the victim. You wont get a shock. The lightening has already been grounded. Remember that speed is of the greatest importance in severe cases. The first thing to do is to loosen tight clothing about the throat and waist. Then clear the air passages of mucus(黏液)if present, and apply artificial respiration if necessary. Give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if needed, or give oxygen if available. Many victims thought to be dead have been revived after treatment. Send someone for a doctor as soon as possible, but dont leave the victim alone. If a doctor is not available, take the person to a hospital as soon as the person can be safely moved. Signs of shock are: pale, cold, sticky skin; weak, rapid pulse; shallow, irregular breathing or, in extreme cases, no breathing at all. To treat shock, you must keep the patient lying down with the head lower than the feet and cover him or her with a blanket but watch out for overheating. Giving a stimulating hot tea or coffee will help, but only if the patient is thoroughly conscious. After breathing has been restored and shock is treated, treat the burns. Apply some salve and cover them with a clean cloth or a sterile dressing. If conscious, the patient will be badly frightened, so do all you can to reassure. A little knowledge and a helping hand may save someones life.

The passage mainly talks about______.

A.which metals conduct electricity best

B.where to go in a thunderstorm

C.how to treat someone struck by lightening

D.how to make mouth-to-mouth resuscitation

听力原文:W: Tony, I have been hearing so much in the news about different presidential can
didates. Can you tell me a little about how Americans elect their President?

M: Well, it's a long process. We start off by deciding who the official candidate for each political party will be. Usually, a person first announces that he or she wants to run for President. If you want to be your party's official candidate, you need to raise money and gather support from party members. Candidates usually campaign to let people know what they represent. They give speeches, meet with community leaders, and participate in debates. This process lasts for several months, and then the party members vote to decide who they want to back in the election.

W: Do you have to be rich to become President?

M: You don't really have to be rich to become President, but it helps. Usually rich people have more connections and can raise money more effectively. Most of our Presidents in the past have been relatively rich men, but not all of them.

W: So, how do you make the final decision?

M: After several months of television ads, interviews, speeches, and kissing babies we have the presidential election. Citizens go to a voting center and cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice.

W: You sounded a little cynical when you said "kissing babies". What did you mean by that?

M: Well, it's quite common for politicians to have themselves photographed kissing babies. It's their way of trying to appear in touch with the average American, but it looks really phony. These days, becoming President is all about acting. The candidates try to appeal to so many different people that they end up abandoning their own opinions. Sometimes, it feels like the parties are all the same.

W: How many parties are there?

M: We have many political parties in the United States, but most of them are quite small. There are really only two with significant power, the Democrats and the Republicans.

(20)

A.Raising money.

B.Gathering support from others.

C.Giving speeches.

D.Choosing the official candidate for each political party.
