The tool is the laser and it is being used by more and more surgeons all over the world, for a very large number of different complaints. The word laser means: light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. As we all know, light is hot, any source of light - from the sun itself clown to a humble match burning - will give warmth. But light is usually spread out over a wide area. The light in a laser beam, however, is concentrated. This means that a light with no more power than that produced by an ordinary electric light bulb becomes intensely strong as it is concentrated to a pinpoint -sized beam.
Experiments with these pinpoint beams showed researchers that difficult energy sources produce beams that have a particular effect on certain living cells. It is now possible for eye surgeons to operate on the back of the human eye without harming the front of the eye, simply by passing a laser beam right through the eyeball. No knives, no stitches(刀口缝合) , no unwanted damage-a true surgical wonder. Operations which once left patients exhausted and in need of long period of recovery time now leave them feeling relaxed and comfortable. So much more difficult operations can now be tried.
The rapid development of laser techniques in the past ten years has made it clear that the future is likely to be very exciting. Perhaps some cancers will be treated with laser in a way that makes surgery not only safer but also more effective. Altogether, tomorrow may see more and more information coming to light on the diseases which can be treated medically.
Which of the following would be appropriate to describe the instruments for surgical operations up until 1960s?
A.Traditional.
B.Simple.
C.Remarkable.
D.Basic.
Unfortunately, when many students pick up a book to read they tend to have no particular purpose in mind other than simply to "read the book". Often they open the book and start reading, page by page, line by line, word by word; in other words, slowly and in great detail. The result is that students frequently don' t have an overall view of what they are reading; also, they tend to forget fairly soon what they' ye been reading.
Students can make their reading much more effective by adopting a strategy (策略) aimed at helping them to understand and to remember what they read. Firstly, they should decide precisely why they' re reading the book: perhaps it' s to find some information that'll answer a question; per haps it' s to understand a difficult idea or argument, and so on. Then the students should decide exactly what they are going to read; it' s seldom necessary to read the whole book. A good starting point is the contents page, the chapter headings, and even the index (索引) at the back of the book. They are very useful in helping to pinpoint the exact pages that need to be read carefully for particular pieces of information.
According to the passage, it is rare for a teacher ______.
A.to recommend a whole book for students to read
B.to require students to read carefully
C.to assign reading with a certain purpose
D.to locate, books for students to find
Section B
Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.
The process of perceiving other people is rarely translated into cold, objective terms. "She was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had fair hair, and wore a colored skirt." More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters. Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very' quickly—perhaps with a twosecond glance.
We try to obtain information about others in many ways. Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainties about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you, so you can compare the observed person's behavior. with the known other's behavior; ob serving a person in a situation where social behavior. is relatively un restrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for; deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person's responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in facetoface interaction to uncover information about another person—questions, selfdisclosures(自我表露), and so on. Getting to know someone is a neverending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are often imprecise. You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him. If we accept the idea that we won't ever fully know another person, it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and deceptions. It will also keep us from being too surprised by seemingly inconsistent behavior. Ironically(讽刺性地), those things that keep us from knowing an other person too well (e. g. secrets and deceptions) may be just as important to the development of a satisfying relationship as the things that enable us to obtain accurate knowledge about a person (e.g. disclosures and truthful statements).

【填空题】In fact, (1) is not a simple product like your (2). It is a kind of (3) that makes something else more (4). For example, suppose you have a (5) of written directions for getting to the bank. Now imagine you have a mapping (6) that you could use to pinpoint where you (7) to go (the bank). Not only could that (8) print out detailed (9) of how to get to the bank, it could also display a full-color image of a map to the bank, along with a brief (10) segment telling you the traffic conditions on the roads around the bank.
