Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

In April 1985, the management of the Coca-Cola Company announced its decision to change the flavor of the company's flagship brand. This decision was made based on the fact that Pepsi consumer re search discovered in blind taste tests that a majority of consumers preferred the taste of Pepsi to that of Coke. The "Pepsi Challenge" campaign made this public knowledge and Coke executives quickly moved to change America's top brand. New Coke came in a new can, with updated red and silver graphics re placing the traditional red and white look. Although taste tests of the New Coke had shown that majority of those tested preferred the new product, these tests could not gauge(评估) the emotional appeal of the "old" Coke. In other words, consumers want their cake and eat it too. A large public cried one after another during the 79 days when old Coke was no longer on the shelves. Coca-cola quickly reintroduced the "old" Coke when they realized market share was falling and named it Classic Coke. Volume for the classic brand has risen 24 percent since 1984, making it the No. 1 soft drink in the land since 1987. Consumers became even more loyal to the brand after it was temporarily taken away from them.

What do you think is the best title for this passage?

A.consumers' Loyalty to the Old Coke Brand.

B.Competition between Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

C.New Coke—A Lesson in Brand Loyalty.

D.Always Coca-Cola.

In 99 cases out of a 100, insomnia (失眠) is caused by a disturbance of the natural sleep rhythm. The reasons why the rhythm has been disturbed are many; they can range from drugs to alcohol to mental illness to health problems to unresolved stress to bad sleep habits. A sudden change in lifestyle. or climate can do it, or a change in a job or an emotional relationship.

Certainly the body must have enough sleep. Tests of sleep-deprived people have proved that lack of sleep can cause fairly rapid physical and mental deterioration (退化). On the other hand, the body doesn't need too much sleep. So if you're sleeping in front of the TV, you might find it difficult to sleep soundly at night. Similarly, if you're holidaying in Spain and spending your days sleeping on the beach, chances are that you'll be wide awake at bedtime.

One interesting phenomenon regarding insomnia is that of summer insomnia. Some people have difficulty sleeping during the summer due to longer daylight hours and warmer nights. Many summer insomniacs feel an almost overwhelming urge to put their heads down on their desks in the afternoons, but they can't find a way to compensate for their wakeful nights. For the worst sufferers I sometimes prescribe a mild sleeping pill which, after a few nights, reestablishes the body's natural sleep rhythm, conditioning it to accept the heat.

From the passage, insomnia results from ______.

A.interruption of the ordinary sleep pattern

B.being unable to sleep

C.keeping awake at night

D.drugs to treat a special disease

Tokyo is one of the most confusing cities in the world. Over 20 millions people live and work in the Tokyo area, and many famous companies have their offices there. But most streets don't have names. So how can you find your way in Tokyo?

Most people in Tokyo are very good at giving directions. They can usually explain how to get to their home or their office from the nearest train station. People in Tokyo often use maps when they give directions. Advertisements in newspapers or magazines, for example, usually have a small map to help you find the company. If you're going to visit someone's house, it's a good idea to ask the person to draw, or fax you, a map of the local area. If you get lost, the best idea is to go to a police station. In Japan, each neighborhood has a small police station, and the police officers there have a map of all the buildings in the area. Giving directions is an important part of their job.

Tokyo is a confusing city mainly because _______.

A.it has a very large population

B.most streets don't have names

C.people in Tokyo are bad at giving directions

D.too many famous companies have their offices there
