Section A

(81) China’s burgeoning middle class population offers a good opportunity for New Zealand wine exporters, says an Auckland University postgraduate student who has researched the market.

(82) Few winemakers have paid attention to China, preferring to focus their export efforts on traditional markets like the UK and the US. But XiePei, who is completing a master of international business degree at the University of Auckland Business School, says there is potential for New Zealand wine to make inroads into the high-price, premium-quality end of the China market.

(83) "The demand for grape wine in China is increasing due to the growing economy and the willingness of Chinese people to embrace Western culture," she said. "The Government is also encouraging people to find alternatives to traditional rice wine in an attempt to reduce the amount of rice that is used in alcohol rather than for food. "

(84) Xie’s research found that while Chinese drinkers often choose domestic over imported wine, they show a strong preference for imported wine on special occasions.

(85) A wine’s country of origin and "brand reputation" are ranked first in terms of important characteristics when purchasing imported wine. Taste, surprisingly, ranked last.

Last year 83 per cent of New Zealand’s $ 282 million in wine exports went to the UK, the US and Australia.

Section A

Embroidery (刺绣) is a brilliant pearl in Chinese art. (81) From the magnificent Dragon Robes worn by emperors to today’s fashions, embroidery adds a great deal of pleasure to our culture and our lives.

The oldest embroidery on record in China dates from the Shang Dynasty. Embroidery in this period symbolised social status. (82) It was not until later on, as the national economy developed, that embroidery entered the lives of the common people.

After the Zhou Dynasty, the Han Dynasty witnessed a leap in both techniques and styles of embroidery. Embroidered objects ranged from the sun, the moon, stars, mountains, dragons, and phoenixes to tigers, flowers and grasses, clouds and geometric patterns. Auspicious words were also fashionable. Both historic records and products of the time prove this.

(83) The cultural relics found in the Mawangdui Han Tomb are the best evidence of this unprecedented development in embroidery. In addition, embroidery unearthed from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, the ancient tombs in Turpan and northern Inner Mongolia, further strengthen this observation.

(84) The Chinese word for embroidery is" xiu" , a picture or embroidery in five colors. It implies beautiful and magnificent things.

Embroidery was an elegant task for ladies who were forbidden to go out of their homes. (85) It was a good pastime to which they could devote their intelligence and passion. Imagine a beautiful young lady embroidering a dainty pouch. Stitch by stitch, she embroiders a pair of love birds for her lover. It’s a cold winter day and the room is filled with the aroma of incense. What a touching and beautiful picture!

Section A

In recent years, Chinese fancy knots have become very popular. (81) They are hand-made ornaments noted for their patterns and bright colors. They are also symbols of happiness and good luck.

Chinese fancy knots are closely related to the everyday life of the Chinese people and express their aspiration for a better life.

"In primitive times, people kept records by tying knots. Later, they used knots as symbols of good luck to decorate their clothes. Some knots were designed to embellish fans and jade pendants. They are regarded as signs of happiness and good luck," said Mr. Duan, professor of China from Peking University.

(82) These beautiful Chinese fancy knots, of a simple or a complicated structure, are made of a single piece of string by tying, drawing, twining, and weaving. The instruments used include crochet hooks, tweezers, scissors, and lighters. The materials needed are string of various colors, gum, and small decorations made of porcelain or jade.

"In feudal China, it was unbecoming for women to show themselves in public. So they devoted most of their time to needlework at home. Making fancy knots was part of their work and they were very skilled at it. (83) Chinese fancy knots are symmetrical and well balanced. The patterns on both sides are identical. You can make an endless chain of knots on a single piece of string. "This symbolizes that life on earth will continue and multiply forever," said Mrs. Xiong, knitting expert.

(84) Chinese fancy knots are named after their shapes or in accordance with what they suggest. They are symbols of prosperity, happiness, wealth, and longevity. (85) As they are believed to be able to remove evil spirits and bring luck, people often carry them and hang them in their homes.

Chinese fancy knots are widely used to decorate clothes, sitting room, and cups, plates and chop sticks on dinner tables.

SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE

Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.

Chinese leaders believe it is necessary to hold the nation together, to keep it growing, to keep moving toward its destiny. China's economic growth has made it more and more dependent on the outside world for investment, markets, and energy. Computers and the Internet, fax machines and photocopiers, modems and satellites all increase the exposure to people, ideas, and the world beyond China's borders. The effect is only just beginning to be felt. Indeed, greater openness is profoundly in China's own interest. If welcomed, it will speed economic growth, enhance the world influence of China and stabilize society. Without the full freedom to think, question, create, China will be at a distinct disadvantage, competing with fully open societies in the Information Age where the greatest source of national wealth is what resides in the human mind.

听力原文: The authorities in China have rushed more than 3,000,000 doses of bird flu vaccine to the western province of Qinghai after migrating geese were found dead from the disease. It's the first time the strain H5N1 has been detected in the country since officials began introducing precautions last year.

Wilput Winfield Haze reports from Beijing:

"China has hundreds of millions of domesticated ducks and chickens. If a large-scale outbreak of avian flu were to occur it could be devastating. So Beijing has ordered the immediate vaccination of all domesticated poultry across the whole west of the country. 3,000,000 birds will be vaccinated this week alone. The Chinese government has also ordered scientists to trace the routes of migratory birds across China to see if dead birds may have turned up elsewhere. Qinghai is remote and sparsely populated. But if the virus were to reach densely populated areas of central China, the story could be very different."

Beijing has ordered the immediate vaccination of all domesticated poultry ______.

A.across the whole country

B.across the province of Qinghai

C.across the whole northwest of the country

D.across the whole west of the country
