A Tale of Scottish Rural Life

Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song(1932)was voted “the best Scottish novel of all time” by Scotland's reading public in 2005. Once considered shocking for its frank description of aspens of the lives of Scotland’s poor rural farmers. It has been adapted for stage, film, TV and radio in recent decades.

The novel is set on the fictional estate of Kinraddie, in the farming country of the Scottish northwest in the years up to and beyond World War l. At its heart is the story of Chris, who is both part of the community and a little outside it.

Grassic Gibbon gives US the most detailed and intimate account of the life of his heroine(女主人公). We watch her grow through a childhood dominated by her cruel but hard-working father;experience tragedy(her mother's suicide and murder of her twin children); and learn about her feelings as she grows into a woman. We see her marry, lose her husband, then marry again. Chris has seemed so convincing a figure to some female readers that they cannot believe that she is the creation of a man.

But it would be misleading to suggest that this book is just about Chris. 1t is truly a novel of a place and its people. Its opening section tells of Kinraddie's long history, in a language that imitates the place’s changing patterns of speech and writing.

The story itself is amazingly full of characters and incidents. It is told from Chris’ point of view but also from that of the gossiping community, a community where everybody knows eye, body else’s business and nothing is ever forgotten.

Sunset Song has a social theme too. It is concerned with what Grassic Gibbon perceives as the destruction of traditional Scottish rural life first by modernization and then by World War l. Gibbon tried hard to show how certain characters resist the war. Despite this, the war takes the young men away, a number of them to their deaths. In particular, it takes away Chris’ husband, Ewan Tavendale. The war finally kills Ewan, but not in the way his widow is told. In fact, the Germans aren’t responsible for his death, but his own side. He is shot because he is said to have run away from a battle.

If the novel is about the end of one way of life it also looks ahead. It is a “Sunset Song” but is concerned too with the new Kinraddie, indeed of the new European world. Grassic Gibbon went on to publish two other novels about the place that continue its story.

36 What is Sunset Song mainly about?

A The First World War.

B The beauty of the sunset.

C The new European world.

D The lives of rural Scottish farmers.

第二篇 Late-night Drinking

Coffee lovers, be careful. Having a quick"pick-me-up" cup of coffee late in the day will interrupt your sleep. As well as being a stimulant(剂 ), caffeine interrupts the flow of melatonin(褪黑激素) ,the brain hormone that sends people into a sleep.

Melatonin levels normally start to riseabout two hours before bedtime. Levels then peak between 2 am and 4 am, before falling again. "It's theneurohormone (神经激素) thatcontrols our sleep and tells our body when to sleep and when to wake,"says Maurice Ohayon of the Stanford Sleep Epidemi-ology Research Centerat Stanford University in California. But researchers inIsraelhavefound thatcaffeinated coffee halves the body's levels of this sleep hormone.

Lotan Shilo and a team at the SapirMedical Center in Tel Aviv University found that six volun-teers slept less well after a cup of caffeinated coffeethan after drinking the same amount of decaf (脱咖啡因咖啡). On average, subjects slept 336 minutes per night after drinkingcaffeinated coffee, com-pared with 415 minutes after decaf. They also took halfan hour to drop off, twice as long as usual

In the second phase of the experiment, the researchers woke the volunteers every three hours andasked them to give aurine (尿) sample. Shilo measured concentrations of abreakdown product of me-latonin. The results suggest that melatoninconcentrations in caffeine drinkers were half those in decafdrinkers. In apaper accepted for publication in Sleep Medicine, the researchers suggest thatcaffeineblocks production of the enzyme(酶)that drives melatonin production.

Because it can take many hours toeliminate caffeine from the body. Ohayon recommends that cof-fee lovers switchto decaf after lunch.

The author mentions"pick-me-up" to indicate that

A.melatonin levels need to be raised.

B.coffee is a stimulant.

C.neurohormone can wake us up.

D.caffeine can balance our brain hormone.

Reading comprehension.
A study involving 8, 500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant

when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-

year research project into teenagers and money, arc particularly worrying as this generation of young people

is likely to be burdened with greater debts man any before.

University tuition fees (学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year

and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling.

In the research, the teenagers were presented with die terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed

to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average £ 31.000 by

the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected

to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would

be less than £ 10.000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363.

Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest,

said. "The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them,

the more likely they arc to become responsible, forward-planning adults who manage their finances confidently

and effectively."

Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of

student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki

Fair-weather, aged 15 from St Helens, said that she had benefited from lessons on personal finance, but

admitted that she still had a lot to learn about money.

Starting a New Tradition

Shantelle Davis is a nine-year-old girl in New York. On a cold night in December, her family is standing around the kitchen table while she lights a candle. The table is decorated with baskets of fruits and vegetables and ears of com for Shantelle and her two brothers.

“This candle represents umoja, an African word that means being together,” Shantelle says. “That's the most important thing for a family.”

Tonight is the first night of Kwanzaa, and Shantelle is spending the holiday with her family. More than 5 million African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa every year from December 26 until January I. It's a time when they get together with their families to think about their history and their ancestors in Africa.

Kwanzaa is very unusual because it was started by one man. In 1966, an American named Maulana Karenga wanted a holiday for African-Americans to honor their culture and traditions. So he used words and customs from Africa to create a new celebration. He took the name Kwanzaa from the words for “first fruits” in Swahili, an African language. At first, a few American families had small celebrations at home. Now there are also Kwanzaa events in schools and public places, and Kwanzaa has spread to other countries like Canada and Jamaica.

The main symbol of Kwanzaa is a candleholder with seven candles, one for each of the principles of Kwanzaa. Each night, a family member lights one of the candles and talks about the idea it represents:being together, being yourself, helping each other, sharing, having a goal, creating, and believing. The candles are red, black, and green, the colors of Kwanzaa. The parents also pour drinks to honor family members who have died. On the last night of Kwanzaa, there is a big dinner with African food, and children receive small presents.

Today people can buy Kwanzaa greeting cards and special Kwanzaa clothes. Stores sell Kwanzaa candles and candleholders. Some people don't believe that Kwanzaa is a real holiday, because it's so new. But other people say that customs and celebrations are always changing and that Kwanzaa shows what is important in people's lives.

Shantelle Davis says she likes Kwanzaa because it's fun. “But I also learn new things every year," she says.
