SECTION A CONVERSATIONS

Directions: In this section you will hear several conversations. Listen to the conversations carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文:M: Is that a map? Are you going sailing or something?

W: I wish. It's a hurricane-tracking chart. It's a map of tropical ocean areas southeast of us. It follows the development of tropical storms, even hurricanes. They develop and move around the Atlantic in Caribbean and here on the Florida coast. We got hit a lot by those in July or August, at least in the winds or rain.

M: Do you think that the tropical storm is on the way?

W: Too early to tell, but we need to be prepared. The radio mentioned possible evacuation routes.

M: Really? It's that serious?

W: You better believe it. Late summer is hurricane season. The television updates locations and speeds every hour.

M: What did they say is out there now?

W: A couple of tropical depressions, two storms and two hurricanes.

M: What's the difference?

W: Wind velocity. A depression is least serious actually, and a hurricane is the most serious.

M: How serious are the winds in hurricanes?

W: They have sustained winds of 74 m ph and up.

M: What are those names on the map? David, Arlene, Francisco, and Gina.

W: You know weather forecasters give the hurricanes the names of people to make storms easy to identify.

M: I wonder what the status of the storm is now.

W: You shall turn on the television. It has the best coverage. There is an up-date coming up in five minutes.

What is the conversation mainly about?

A.Memories of a recent storm.

B.How strong winds develop into a hurricane.

C.Weather patterns that can affect Florida.

D.Planning a summer vacation.

听力原文: Two tragedies at coal mines on opposite sides of the world remind us all how dangerous some jobs can be.

In China last week, floodwaters from a river trapped one hundred and eighty-one miners in two mines. An official in Shandong province said Thursday that there was no hope of finding them alive.

The Crandall Canyon mine in the American state of Utah collapsed on August sixth, trapping six miners. Last week, another collapse at the mine killed three rescuers and injured six others.

Coal mining deaths have been decreasing in the United States. But last year there were forty-seven, more than double the number the year before. Twelve of the deaths resulted from an explosion at the Sago mine in West Virginia.

The Labor Department has a newly published report on work-related deaths last year in the United States. The construction industry had the largest number. But the single deadliest job in the United States is commercial fisherman.

What does it mean by mentioning "opposite sides of the world"?

A.China.

B.Europe.

C.South America.

D.Japan.

听力原文:M: Tina, have you ever noticed advertisements?

W: What's that?

M: Some advertisements say "Learn a foreign language in 6 weeks, or get your money back!"

W: It never happens quite like that. The only language easy to learn is the mother tongue. And think how much practice that gets!

M: It is really hard to master a language. Some people try at home, with books and records or tapes; some use radio or television programs; others go to evening classes.

W: A few people try to learn a language fast by studying for 6 or more hours a day. Do you think it's a very effective way to learn a foreign language?

M: I don't think so. It's clearly to learn the language in the country where it's spoken. There you come into contact with it all the time.

W: I can't agree with you any more, but not everyone can afford this, and for many it's not necessary.

M: However, foreign language, especially English, is an indispensable part of our life. People need the language' to do their work better.

W: You bet it. It's impossible for everyone to go abroad. And we can achieve great success as long as excellent ways are adopted.

M: Besides, perseverance is very important. We should accumulate what we learn gradually and put them into practice.

W: Undoubtedly, it's a hard work. Machines and good books will give us some help, but they cannot replace the learner himself.

What is Tina's attitude towards the advertisement?

A.She thinks there is no reason to deny its truth.

B.She pays no attention to it.

C.She herself cannot judge it clearly.

D.She does not believe it at all.
