听力原文: People say that to get up early in three mornings is equal to one day of time. Early rising is beneficial in more than one way. First, it helps to keep us fit. We all need fresh air. But air is never so fresh as early in the morning. Besides, it improves our health to take our morning exercises.

Secondly, early rising helps us in our studies. In the morning our mind is clear, and we learn more quickly. We find it easier to memorize what we learn. The study is very efficient then.

Thirdly, early rising enables us to plan our work for the day. We cannot work well without a proper plan. Just as the plan for the year should be made in foe spring, so the plan for the day should be made in the morning.

Fourthly, early rising gives us enough time to get ready for our work, such as to brush our teeth, take a shower, get dressed, and eat our breakfast properly.

Finally, there is less traffic on the way. Buses and cars are not crowded, and there are less traffic jams. The fore, it takes less time to get to our schools and work places.

Late risers may find it very difficult to cultivate the habit of early rising. Since they already know the benefits of early rising, they ought to make up their minds and make a special effort to do so.

(30)

A.Early risers and late risers.

B.Benefits of early rising.

C.How to get up early.

听力原文:M: Julie, I've heard you've got an online degree through distance learning. Congr
atulations!

W: Thank you, Richard. That is attributed to the increased availability of the Internet throughout the world.

M: Yon know, I'm quite interested in online learning. Can you tell me why you chose this way of studying?

W: Well, for me, the most compelling reasons for trying to get an online degree are time and money.

M: What does that mean?

W: With an online course, you can enroll in a class, do assignments on the Internet, and even communicate with classmates in chatrooms or on bulletin boards. All of these activities can be clone from the comfort of your home or laptop: any time; any place.

M: That seems very nice.

W: Yes. Besides, getting such a degree can be cheaper, because you don't have to pay associated costs related to an overseas adventure: airfare, housing, local transportation, etc.

M: Oh, that sounds quite attractive.

W: But remember: for all these benefits, there are a number of obstacles to this kind of learning.

M: Really? What are they?

W: Above all else, you have to consider how a degree from an online school will he received by future employers. In some countries, companies might feel that the academic standards of such an online institution are not as challenging or rigorous as a regular residency program.

M: Oh, I see. Does it have any other disadvantage?

W: Sure. You probably won't have face-to-face contact with other students since everything is online. Such contact is very important in learning how to deal with many aspects of non-verbal communication that aren't obvious in an on line chatroom.

M: That makes sense. Thank you for your information about getting online degrees.

W: You're welcome.

(23)

A.The benefits and disadvantages of distance education.

B.How to get an online degree.

C.The advantages of doing homework on the Internet.

D.How to communicate with classmates on the Internet.

Surveys have found that wages and benefits are not always the major determining factor for
employees who are looking to move between jobs. David Bikowski is a case in point. Last year he was laid off from his production job at a factory where he had worked for close to eight years. After several months of searching for a new job, he found employment at another factory in a nearby town. Although he would earn $100 a week less in the new position than he did at his old one, he took the job. He has a family to support and couldn't afford to stay out of work much longer. Just a few months after starting at his new position, he received an offer to return to his old job at his old salary. Bikowski decided to turn the offer down. Why? Because, he says, he finds that his new workplace is much less stressful than the old one. "We've been able to get by on what I've been earning at Strathmore (his new employer), and I know I'll be getting the usual raises as time goes on," he explains. "And it's better for my family in ways that money can't pay for. I'm more relaxed when I get home, I have better quality time with my kids. That's worth more than money to me." Bikowski represents a growing sentiment among the country's workforce. More and more workers are looking for less stressful lives, sociologists say. Work conditions are often given equal weight with wages and benefits when job decisions are made.

Why did David Bikowski leave his job?

A.He wanted a promotion.

B.He was fired.

C.He wanted more money.

D.He was laid off.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

Advertising informs consumers about new products available on the market. It gives us information about everything from toothpaste to computers and cars. But the "information" it provides is actually very often "misinformation". It tells us the products' benefits but hides their disadvantages. Advertising not only leads us to buy things that we don't need and can't afford, but it also confuses our sense of reality.

Advertisers use many methods to get us to buy their products. One of their most successful methods is to make us feel dissatisfied with ourselves and our imperfect lives. Advertisements show ns who we aren't and what we don't have. Advertisements make us. afraid that people won' t like us if we don' t use the advertised products.

If fear is the negative(消极的)motive for buying a product, then wanting a good serf-image is the positive reason for choosing it. Each of us has a mental picture of the kind of person we would like to be. Advertises get psychologists to study the way consumers think and their reasons for choosing one brand instead of another. These experts tell advertisers about the motives of fear and self-image. They also inform. them about recent studies with colors and words.

Many people believe that advertising does not affect them. They know that there is freedom to choose. Unfortunately, they probably don't realize the powerful effect of advertising. They may not understand advertisers spend billions of dollars each year on aggressive(过分的)competition for our money, and they are extremely successful.

What's the purpose of advertising?

A.To introduce people the feature of the goods.

B.To have people buy new products on the market.

C.To make people know how to use the products.

D.To tell people how to save money while buying goods.

?Read the salary offer negotiation.

?In most of the lines 34 - 45, there is one extra word. It is either grammatically incorrect or does not fit in with the meaning of the text. Some lines, however, are correct.

?If a line is correct, write CORRECT on your Answer Sheet.

?If there is an extra word in the line, write the extra word in CAPITAL LETTERS on your Answer Sheet.

Know your market, and know your marketability. Always keep a minimum salary requirement in the mind. With a little research, you can determine a realistic and

34 satisfactory salary. Decide what you need, want. and can survive on before you

35 walk into for an interview. Wait for an offer —don't just announce your minimum

36 to the interviewer. And never respond too immediately —take time to think things

37 over. If you feel the package is unsatisfactory, figure out what you would make

38 the package more palatable. Don't just wait to see what the employer has to offer.

39 Get your offer in the writing. This includes the salary you agree upon, details on

40 potential increases, and any unusual terms regarding to your benefits or vacation

41 time. For example, if you need immediate leave before you've accrued vacation

42 time, or the company agrees to pay to your entire health-care premium, you'll

43 have something to snow before HR if a problem comes up. If you accept the job.

44 send a letter while confirming your mutual agreement on the offer and keep a

45 copy for your records. If you're dissatisfied with the Salary package but are not willing to take the job nonetheless, ask for a performance review in three or six months, and get it in writing.

Text 1 根据以下资料,回答下列各题。 In order to “change lives for the better” and reduce “de
pendency” George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, introduced the “upfront work search” scheme. Only if the jobless arrive at the jobcentre with a CV, register for online job search, and start looking for work will they be eligible for benefit and then they should report weekly rather than fortnightly. What could be more reasonable? More apparent reasonableness followed. There will now be a seven-day wait for the jobseeker’s allowance. “Those first few days should be spent looking for work, not looking to sign on.” he claimed. “We’re doing these things because we know they help people stay off benefits and help those on benefits get into work faster.” Help? Really? On first hearing, this was the socially concerned chancellor, trying to change lives for the better, complete with “reforms” to an obviously indulgent system that demands too little effort from the newly unemployed to find work, and subsidises laziness. What motivated him, we were to understand, was his zeal for “fundamental fairness”— protecting the taxpayer, controlling spending and ensuring that only the most deserving claimants received their benefits. Losing a job is hurting: you don’t skip down to the jobcentre with a song in your heart, delighted at the prospect of doubling your income from the generous state. It is financially terrifying, psychologically embarrassing and you know that support is minimal and extraordinarily hard to get. You are now not wanted; you support is minimal and extraordinarily hard to get. You are now not wanted; you are now excluded from the work environment that offers purpose and structure in your life. Worse, the crucial income to feed yourself and your family and pay the bills has disappeared. Ask anyone newly unemployed what they want and the answer is always: a job. But in Osborneland, your first instinct is to fall into dependency — permanent dependency if you can get it — supported by a state only too ready to indulge your falsehood. It is as though 20 years of ever-tougher reforms of the job search and benefit administration system never happened. The principle of British welfare is no longer that you can insure yourself against the risk of unemployment and receive unconditional payments if the disaster happens. Even the very phrase “jobseeker’s allowance” — invented in 1996 — is about redefining the unemployed as a “jobseeker” who had no mandatory right to a benefit he or she has earned through making national insurance contributions. Instead, the claimant receives a time-limited “allowance,” conditional on actively seeking a job; no entitlement and no insurance, at £71.70 a week, one of the least generous in the EU. George Osborne’s scheme was intended to

A.provide the unemployed with easier access to benefits.

B.encourage jobseekers’ active engagement in job seeking.

C.motivate the unemployed to report voluntarily.

D.guarantee jobseekers’ legitimate right to benefits.
