As the population of the world keeps on growing, it gets more and more difficult to feed e
veryone. The United States is one of the lucky countries because it grows enough food for itself and still has enough to export to other parts of the world. One reason for this is that the United States is a large country with a variety of climates. Most of the central part of the country is especially suitable for raising grain. Wheat and corn are the most important crops in the region. The United States exports millions of tons of grain every year. Wheat is used to make bread, a basic food throughout the world. Most of the corn is used to feed animals, which in turn become food themselves.

The southeastern part of the United States has a warm, damp climate. It grows cotton, rice and sugar. Florida specializes in fruits and vegetables. It is famous for its orange, lemons and grape. Florida has warm weather all year round, so it can provide vegetables for the rest of the country in the middle of winter. Even When it is snowing in New York, the people there can still eat fresh tomatoes and green vegetables that have been shipped north from Florida.

The United States can grow enough food because of (46) climates.

Most central part of the United States can raise grain, (47) and corn.

Large companies need a way to reach the savings of the public. The same problem, on a
smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the business through the Stock Exchange.By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and overseas.

When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it.Instead, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to some other saver who is seeking to invest his money.

Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the Government or by local authorities.Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, railway, this country could not function. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The Government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange.

There is hardly a man or woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the savings of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these savings can reach those who need finance.

How can a single stamp be worth $ 16 800?

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony (殖民地) of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer—Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius ' Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally marked the words " Post Office" instead of " Post Paid" on the several hundred stamps that he printed.

Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left—fourteen One-Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two-Penny Blues. Because of the Two-Penny Blue's rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $ 16800 for it.

Mauritius is the name of______.

A.an island kingdom

B.a British colony

C.a province of India

D.a London printer
