听力原文: Unconsciously, we all keep a comfortable distance around us when we interact with other people. This space between us and another person forms invisible walls. The amount of space changes depending on the nature of the relationship. For example, we are usually more comfortable standing closer to tamely members than to strangers. Personality also determines the size of the area with which we are comfortable when talking to people. Introverts often prefer to interact with others at a greater distance than do extroverts. Cultural styles are important too. A Japanese employer and employee usually stand farther apart while talking than their American counterparts. Latin Americans and Arabs tend to stand closer than Americans do when talking.

For Americans, the usual distance in social conversation ranges from about an arm's length to four feet. Less space in the American culture may be associated with the slightest accidental touching of another person revealing how uncomfortable Americans are if people are too close. In cultures where close physical contact is acceptable and even desirable, Americans may be perceived as cold and distant.

In the old days, children were familiar with birth and death as part of life. This is perhaps the first generation of American youngsters who had ever been close by during the birth of a baby and baby ever experienced the death of a family member.

Nowadays when people grow old, we often send them to nursing homes. When they get sick, we transfer them to a hospital, where children are forbidden to visit terminally-iii patients-even when those patients are their parents. This deprives the dying patient of significant family members during the last few days of the life and it deprives the children of an experience of death, which is an important learning experience.

Some of my colleagues and I once interviewed and followed approximately 500 terminally-ill patients in order to find out what they could teach us and how we could be of more benefit, not just to them but to the members of their families as well. We were most impressed by the fact that even those patients who were not told of their serious illness were quite aware of its potential out come.

It is important for family members, and doctors and nurses to understand these patients communications in order to truly understand their needs, fears and fantasies(幻想). Most of our patients welcomed another human being with whom they could talk openly, honestly and frankly about their trouble. Many of them shared with us their tremendous need to be informed, to be kept up-to-date on their medical condition and to be told when the end was near. We found out that patients who had been dealt with openly and frankly were better able to cope with the approach of death and finally to reach a true stage of acceptance prior to death.

The elders of contemporary Americans ______.

A.were quite unfamiliar with birth and death

B.had often experienced the fear of death as part of life

C.usually witnessed the birth or death of a family member

D.were often absent when a family member was born or dying

听力原文:M: Doctor Thomas? This is Keith Bradley from The Daily News. I'd like to ask you some questions about the new official standard weight that you purchased.

W: I'd be happy to help you. What would you like to know?

M: First of all, how is the standard weight used?

W: Well, the people in our department use it to check the scales all over the country. The Department of Weights and Measures—we're a government agency—it's our responsibility to see that all the scales measure a kilogram accurately. So this is the weight we use to adjust the scales.

M: How did you check the scales before?

W: We have an old standard weight that we used to use. It had to be replaced because it was imprecise. You see, it was made of poor quality metal that was too porous—it absorbed too much moisture.

M: Oh, so when the weather was humid, it weighed more. And when it was dry, it weighed less.

W: Exactly. And that variation can affect the standards of the whole country. So our department had the new weight made out of higher quality metal.

M: How much did it cost?

W: About forty-five thousand dollars.

M: Forty-five thousand dollars! For a one kilogram weight! That's more expensive than gold. Is it really worth that much?

W: I'm sure it is. Industries depend on our government agency to monitor the accuracy of scales, so that when they buy and sell their products there's one standard. Think of the drug industry, for example: those companies rely on high accuracy scales to manufacture and package medicine.
