听力原文: How do the birds manage to find their way? There seems to be no single answer: they use many methods. Some we are beginning to understand; and there may be some that depend on abilities we have not yet suspected. Many birds certainly follow major geographical features. Migrants follow recognized land, fly over familiar sea and arrive at their summer homes.

But all birds cannot use such straightforward methods. An Arctic sea bird, for example, has to fly at least 3,000 kilometers across the Antarctic Ocean with no land to guide it. We know that some birds flying at night, navigate by the star for on cloudy nights they tend to get lost.

Day-flying birds may use the sun. If they are to do so, they must have a precise sense of time. Still others appear to be able to use the earth' s magnetic field as a guide. So it seems that many migrating birds must carry in their brains a clock, a compass and the memory of a map.

(33)

A.They use many different methods.

B.All birds follow major geographical features.

C.All birds use their memory of a map.

D.We have no information about this.

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: No man can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if you study correctly the signs around us we can tell important changes in weather. This way of telling what the weather will be on the following day or two is called weather forecasts.

For many centuries and in all countries people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water vapor in the air, and therefore rain will probably come. Rings round the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel pain in their bones. This is a sign of the coming of wet weather. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming. They fly near the ground if rain or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because of the insects which they are hunting that they fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows always come in the evening. If a fog appears in the morning just about sunrise then the day will be warm. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. If the rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.

Most of the above sayings have been made by people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather fore-casting.

What kind of weather will it be when distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near?

A.The weather will be clear and fine.

B.Rain will probably come.

C.There will be a fog.

D.Fine weather will continue.

听力原文: Today when a man steps on to the moon, or something new and important happens, the world learns about it immediately. What did the newspapers say about that first flight in 19037 Strangely enough, they said hardly anything about it at all. There were only a few reports about it in the papers. These reports said very little. Some of the things they said were not even correct. In 1904, the Wrights built a second machine. They called it Flyer No. 2. They invited some reporters to a field near Dayton to watch them fly. Unfortunately, there was some mechanical trouble with the plane and it did not fly at all that day. The reporters went away. They were disappointed and did not come back. The Wrights went on with their work. In 1905, they built an even better machine, Flyer No. 3. They were able to stay up in the air for half an hour and more in this machine. They were able to turn and climb in the air. Farmers, travelers on the roads around Dayton often saw them flying. But when these people told reporters about it, they refused to believe them.

The Wrights offered Flyer No. 3 to the United States Government. The Government was not interested. They seemed to think the Wrights wanted money in order to build an airplane. They did not understand the Wrights had already done this, and flown it as well. Experts were still saying that mechanical flight was impossible. At the end of 1905, the two brothers took their plane to pieces. The parts were put into a huge wooden case. It seemed nobody was interested.

(30)

A.They were able to fly it in the air.

B.They were able to stay up in the air for half an hour and more in the machine.

C.They were able to carry travelers.

D.They were 'able to fly in mound Dayton.
