The smart job-seeker needs to rid herself of several standard myths about interviewing
.What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some suggestions to help you do your best at a job interview.

Myth 1:The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offer.Only half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often means rejecting job offers you don,t want! So, before you do back-flips for an employer be sure you want the job.

Myth 2:Always please the interviewer.

Not true.Try to please yourself.Giving answers that you think will suit a potential employer and practicing a policy of appeasement (讨好)are certain to get you nowhere. An effective interview (where you are offered the job or not) is like an exciting encounter in conversation with your seatmate on an airplane.

Myth 3 :Never interrupt the interviewer.

An exciting conversation always makes us feel free—free to interrupt, to disagree, to agree enthusiastically. So, when interviewing, try to be yourself.Employers will either like or dislike you, but at least you'll have made an impression.Leaving an employer indifferent is the worst impression you

can make. And the way to make an effective impression is to feel free to be yourself!

The process of perceiving other people is rarely translated (to ourselves or others) into cold, objective terms. "She was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had fair hair, and wore a colored skirt." More often, we try to get inside the other person to pinpoint his or her attitudes, emotions, motivations, abilities, ideas and characters. Furthermore, we sometimes behave as if we can accomplish this difficult job very quickly--perhaps with a two-second glance.

We try to obtain information about others in many ways. Berger suggests several methods for reducing uncertainities about others: watching, without being noticed, a person interacting with others, particularly with others who are known to you so you can compare the observed person’s behavior. with the known others' behavior; observing a person in a situation where social behavior. is relatively unrestrained or where a wide variety of behavioral responses are called for; deliberately structuring the physical or social environment so as to observe the person's responses to specific stimuli; asking people who have had or have frequent contact with the person about him or her; and using various strategies in face-to-face interaction to uncover information about another person--questions, self-disclosures, and so on. Getting to know someone is a never-ending task, largely because people are constantly changing and the methods we use to obtain information are of- ten imprecise. You may have known someone for ten years and still know very little about him. If we accept the idea that we won't ever fully know another person, it enables us to deal more easily with those things that get in the way of accurate knowledge such as secrets and deceptions. It will also keep us from being too surprised or shocked by seemingly inconsistent behavior. Ironically, those things that keep us from knowing another person well (e. g. , secret and deceptions) may be just as important to the development of a satisfying relationship as those things that enable us to obtain accurate knowledge about a person (e. g. , disclosures and truthful statement).

What do we learn from the first paragraph?

A.People are better described in cold, objective terms.

B.The difficulty of getting to know a person is usually underestimated.

C.One should not judge people by their appearance.

D.One is usually subjective when assessing other people’s personality.

eed to look at telecommunications and any other communications technologies within the wider context of human communication activity. Early findings show that many people are uneasy and even fearful of information technology by avoiding it or by using it in minimal ways.

To obtain this type of data we have spent time with individuals, watching how they communicate where they get confused, what they don't understand and the many mistakes they make. You can do this type of research yourself in an informal way. Just watch someone at the desk next to you trying to use a phone or trying to fill in a form. What you will quickly notice about people on the phone is that they use very few of the buttons available on the keypad, and they get quite anxious if they have to use any buttons outside their normal ones. Most will not use the instruction book, and those that do will not necessarily have a rewarding experience. Watch someone fill out a form--a good meaty one such as an application form. or a tax form--and you will see a similar pattern of distressed behavior.

The simple fact we can all observe from how people use these ordinary instruments of everyday communication is how messy, uncertain and confusing the experience can be. Now multiply these individual close encounters of the communicative kind to take account of the full range you may experience in a single day, from getting up in the morning until you go to bed at night and the world takes on a slightly different appearance.

Even watching television which for many provides an antidote to the daily confusion is itself fraught with a kind of low level confusion. For example, if you ring people up five minutes after the evening news has finished and ask them what the news was about, many cannot remember, and those who do remember get some of it wrong.

One of the reasons why this obvious confusion gone unnoticed is because "communication" is a word we associate with success, and therefore we expect the process to work effectively most of the time. To suggest otherwise is to challenge one of our society's most deeply held beliefs.

How do scientists know many people are uneasy about information technology?

A.By asking people to answer questions orally.

B.By asking people to fill in various question forms.

C.By making people use instruments of everyday communication.

D.By watching people using information technology.

听力原文: Generalising about education in the United States involves some hazard becaus
e education is decentralised and standards vary from place to place. What is more, diversity is the hallmark of American education. Education is largely a public function in America, but religious and private institutions do sponsor schools. These private schools, particularly in the primary and secondary field, are now enjoying a resurgence. Most children in America begin school in a kindergarten class at age 5. This follows with eight years of primary education, then four years of high school. Education is compulsory until about age 16. The existence of large minorities, many with a primary language other than English, complicates the educational process. Many Americans do not believe that their school standards are high enough. The high rate of functional illiteracy gives credence to this charge. Higher education in America is widespread with about 1,800 post-secondary institutions. These include two-year community colleges, four-year undergraduate colleges and universities, and many schools which have extensive graduate programmes. Some schools are privately funded, but most receive the bulk of their funding from public sources. There is a great range of quality between higher educational institutions and, some universities have outstanding academic records. These quality differences may be overemphasised for many non-prestige schools have excellent programmes. In the long run, the individual determines the education he gets. Questions 16 to 19 are based on the passage you have just heard. 16. Why is generalising about American education so difficult? 17. Where do most American schools obtain their funding? 18. Why do minorities create an educational problem in America? 19. What is the safe generalisation about quality in American higher education?16.

A.From religious organisations.

B.From public sources.

C.From corporate sources.

D.From research grants.
