White rice is the world ’ s most popular form. of rice. But it goes through a milling process that removes many nutrients(营养成分) . As a result, people who eat a poor diet based on white rice may not get enough vitamin A. Each year about 250, 000 to 500, 000 children go blind from vitamin A deficiency . The World Health Organization(WHO ) says half of them die within a year of losing their sight. Vitamin A deficiency is a problem especially in Africaand Southeast Asia.
So scientists thought of an answer. They combined white rice with plant compounds that the body can change intovitamin A. These plant colorings give the rice a golden color.
The scientists also thought of a plan to give away this Golden Rice for free to poor farmers. But the rice cannot be madeusing traditional methods. The scientists worked for ten years, until 1990, to develop the technology to add genes to rice. Then it took nine more years to get the genes they wanted into the seed.
Professor Ingo Potrykus says rice with two added genes will be available in 2013. One gene comes from maize, or corn, and the other from a soil bacterium (细菌) .Opponents say such crops may cause environmental damage by breeding withother plants. Opponents also question the safety of Golden Rice. However, Mr. Potrykus says Golden Rice has never beenshown to be unsafe for the environment or people. Many agricultural organizations support the project.
20. What is the probable reason why some people do not get enough Vitamin A?
A.Because they are short of food
B.Because white rice contains no vitamin
C.Because they feed on white rice
D.Because white rice has no nutrients

B.average
C.increase
D.shortage
When did the scientists begin to develop the technology to add genes to Golden Rice?A.In 1980
B.In 1990
C.In 2000
D.In 2004
What is professor Potrykus ’ s attitude towards the breeding of Golden Rice?A.Doubtful
B.Negative
C.Neutral
D.Positive
According to this law, changes in the prices of goods cause change in supply and demand. An increase in the price of the goods causes an increase in supply-then number of goods the producers make. Producers will make more goods when they can get higher prices for the goods. The producer makes more shoes as the price of shoes goes up. At the same time, an increase in the price of the goods causes a decrease in demand—the number of goods the consumers buy. This is because people buy less when the price is high. People buy fewer shoes as the price of shoes goes up. Conversely, a decrease in the price causes an increase in demand (people buy more shoes) and a decrease in supply (producers make fewer shoes).
Business firms look at both supply and demand when they make decisions about price and production. They look for the equilibrium point where supply equals demand. At this point, the number of shoes produced is 3000 and the price of the shoes is $30. $30 is the equilibrium price: at this price the consumers will buy all of the 3000 shoes which the producers make. If the producers increase the price of the shoes, or if they produce more than 3000 shoes, the consumers will not buy all of the shoes. The producers will have a surplus(过剩)—more supply than demand—so they must decrease the price in order to sell all of the shoes. On the other hand, if they make fewer than 3000 shoes, there will be a shoes shortage —more demand than supply—and the price will go up.
According to the Law of Supply and Demand, the equilibrium price is the best price for the good. The consumers and the producers will agree on this price because it is the only price that helps them both equally.
Why does an increase in price cause an increase in supply? ______
A.Consumers buy more goods when prices are high.
B.Producers make more goods when prices are high.
C.Producers want to sell all of their goods.
D.Consumers will not buy all of the goods.
B.percentage change in price divided by the percentage change in quantity demanD
C.change in quantity demanded divided by the change in price
D.change in price divided by the change in quantity deman
D.
