You must have been troubled by when to say "I love you" because it is one of the greatest puz-zles in our life.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn&39; t love you back? Or if they do say it but youdon&39;t feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be nerve-racking(紧张) and riskyand can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it firstreally in a position of weakness? Doesn&39;t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the otherhalf has shown their hand fh&39;st?

"A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sid-ney Crown."But love is seldom equal." All relationships go through power straggles but, he says,if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in."That feeling of &39;I&39; ve always loved youmore&39; may be subverted(颠覆,破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often e-merges in squabbling(大声争吵)." In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always themost powerful."The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough totalk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins.Psychosexual therapist PaulaHall agrees."The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, theperson who says &39;I love you&39; first may also be the one who says &39;I&39;m bored with you&39; first." Hallbelieves that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it.

"Is it said when they&39; re drunk? Is it said before their parmer flies off on holiday, and what it reallymeans is &39; Please don&39; t be unfaithful to me&39; ? By saying &39; I love you&39;, they really saying&39; Do youlove me?&39; If so, wouldn&39; t it just be more honest to say that?" Collins agrees that intention is every-thing."It&39; s not what is said, but how it&39; s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of thespeaker."

What is the main idea of this passage? 查看材料

A.The importance of "I love you".

B.The meaning of "I love you"

C.The time of saying "I love you"

D.The place of saying "I love you".

The aim of a letter of application(求职信) is to help you to "sell" yourself. It should state【21】the job you want, and should tell what your abilities are and what you have【22】. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without【23】out any necessary facts. In writing a letter of application, keep in【24】that the things a possible employer is most【25】to want to know about are your qualifications(条件), your achievements(成绩) and your aims. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important part.【26】the first few sentences fail to【27】the reader's attention, the rest of the letter may not be【28】at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not【29】your own need or desires. For example, instead of beginning with "I saw your【30】in today's newspaper," you might say "I have made a careful【31】of your advertising during the past six months." or "I have made a survey(调查) in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives【32】your product and why they like it."

Try not to look ordinary. Be clear【33】the kind of job for which you are now【34】. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask, "What can I【35】in a letter? Employers want experience--which, naturally, no【36】has." The answer is that everything you have ever done is【37】

It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter.【38】a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something certain to do or expect. An excellent【39】is to enclose(内附) a stamped, self- addressed envelope with your letter. That makes it【40】for a possible employer to get in touch with you.

听力原文: In science the meaning of the word "explain" suffers with civilization's every step in search of reality. Science cannot really explain electricity, magnetism, and gravitation; their effects can be measured and predicted, but of their nature is no more known to the modem scientists than to Thales who first looked into the nature of the electrification of amber, a hard yellowish-brown gum. Most contemporary physicists reject the notion that man can ever discover what these mysterious forces "really" are. Electricity, Bertrand Russell says, "is not a thing, like St. Paul's Cathedral; it is a way in which things behave. When we have told how things behave when they are electrified, and under what circumstances they are electrified, we have told all there is to tell." Until recently scientists would have disapproved of such an idea. Aristotle, for example, whose natural science dominated western thought for two thousand years, believe that man could arrive at an understanding of reality by reasoning from self-evident principles. He felt, for example, that it is a self-evident principle that everything in the universe has its proper place, hence one can deduce that objects fall to the ground because that's where they belong, and smoke goes up because that's where it belongs. The goal of Aristotelian science was to explain why things happen. Modem science was born when Galileo began trying to explain how things happen and thus originated the method of controlled experiment that now forms the basis of scientific investigation.

(33)

A.To explain why things happen.

B.To explain how things happen.

C.To describe self-evident principles.

D.To support Aristotelian science.

I am delighted to be with you. I first visited China 22 years ago, but this is my first vi
sit to your university, in a city whose students have helped shape the development of modem China. So I am privileged to have the opportunity to share ideas about U. S. -China relations in the modem era of globalization with people who will, I expect, help write Chinese history—through deeds and words—in the 21 st century. //

It was the students of Beijing who in May 1919 protested the Treaty of Versailles' failure to expel Japanese occupiers from China. In that action, the source of the May 4 Movement, Beijing's students not only made a bold statement about China's freedom from foreign occupation and right to self-determination. They also ushered in the era of modem China, taking a decisive step toward China's emergence from imperial rule and stagnation. I think it is useful to begin our exchanges about the future from the vantage point of what happened almost a century ago in this historic city. //

Chinese are tightly proud of the history of the world's oldest continuous civilization, and look to it for lessons. America is a young nation by comparison, but suggestion that we live exclusively in the present, unshaped by history, is a misleading caricature. So I would like to share with you my perceptions about what this last century has meant to our two countries, how we have perceived each other, and where we are going. Many people talk about this new millennium as an unprecedented age of globalization. Extraordinary it is, but unprecedented it is not. //

In 1902, the automobile was just coming into use in the United States. Man's first airplane flight occurred 99 years ago, on a beach in North Carolina. The wireless radio followed in a few years, transforming societies—much like the Internet is doing today. The telephone enabled people to converse across mountains, rivers, and indeed around the world. The United States was transformed by this earlier era of globalization in the most fundamental way—the face of its population. In each year of the first decade of the last century, new immigrants to America numbered about one percent of the existing population. //

A country that had been largely composed of people of English, German, Irish, and Africa descent found itself the chosen destination of millions of immigrants from different parts of the planet—Poles, Russians, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, and Jews, among others. Their contributions to American economic, social, scientific, intellectual, and political life were enormous. We learned that openness—to people, goods, capital, and of course ideas—is our greatest strength as a country and society. Although change and adaptation and intrusions from outside can be frightening, and pose difficulties of adjustment, openness spurs dynamism, flexibility, competition, liberty, and the individual pursuits of happiness. //
