You may have wondered why the supermarkets are all the same. It is not because the compani
es that operate them lack imagination. It is because they all aim at persuading people to buy things.

In the supermarket, it takes a while for the mind to get into a shopping mode. This is why the area immediately inside the entrance is known as the "decompression zone". People need to slow down and look around, even if they are regulars. In sales terms this area is bit of a loss, so it tends to be used more for promotion.

Immediately inside the first thing shoppers may come to is the fresh fruit and vegetables section. For shoppers, this makes no sense. Fruit and vegetables can be easily damaged, so they should be bought at the end, not the beginning, of a shopping trip. But what is at work here? It turns out that selecting good fresh food is a way to start shopping, and it makes people feel less guilty about reaching for the unhealthy stuff later on.

Shoppers already know that everyday items, like milk, are invariably placed towards the back of a store to provide more opportunities to tempt customers. But supermarkets know shoppers know this, so they use other tricks, like placing popular items halfway along a section so that people have to walk all along the aisle looking for them. The idea is to boost "dwell time": the length of time people spend in a store.

Traditionally retailers measure "football", as the number of people entering a store is known, but those numbers say nothing about where people go and how long they spend there. But nowadays, a piece of technology can fill the gap: the mobile phone. Path Intelligence, a British company tracked people's phones at Gunwharf Quays, a large retailer centre in Portsmouth — not by monitoring calls, but by plotting the positions of handsets as they transmit automatically to cellular networks. It found that when dwell time rose 1$ sales rose 1.3%.

Such techniques are increasingly popular because of a deepening understanding about how shoppers make choices. People tell market researchers that they make rational decisions about what to buy, considering things like price, selection or convenience. But subconscious forces, involving emotion and memories, are clearly also at work.

In Paragraph 2, "decompression zone" is the area meant to______.

A.prepare shoppers for the mood of buying

B.offer shoppers a place to have a rest

C.encourage shoppers to try new products

D.provide shoppers with discount information

There is nothing new about people cutting down trees. In ancient times, Greece, Italy,
and Great Britain were covered with forests. Over the centuries those forests were gradually cut back, until now almost nothing is left.

Today, trees are being cut down more rapidly. A major cause of present destruction is the worldwide demand for wood. (67) In industrial countries, people are using more and more wood for paper, furniture and houses. There is not enough wood in these countries, therefore they have begun taking wood from the forest of Asia, Africa and other countries.

Wood is also in great demand in developing countries. (68) In many area, people depend on wood to cook their food. As the population grows, the need for wood grows. But when too many treesare cut down, forests are destroyed. In reality, there is usually no chance to grow back. In this way, many millions of acresof forestsare destroyed every year.

(69)The destruction of forests affects first the people who usedto live there. It also hasother effects far way. For example, trees help to absorb heavy rains. When the trees are cut down, the rain pours all at onceinto the river.

(70)But finally, the loss of forests may have an effect on the climate of our planet. Together with increasing pollution, it could causetemperature to rise, and the climate will change around the world. No one would know exactly what effects the world have on our life. For many people the effects would probably be destructive.

听力原文: Rader, 60, of Park City, entered the guilty pleas as his trial was scheduled to
begin Monday. Referring to his victims as "projects," Rader laid out for the court how he would "troll" for victims on his off-time, then stalk them and kill them. "I had never strangled anyone before, so I really didn't know how much pressure you had to put on a person or how long it would take," he told the court in describing his first killings in 1974, a couple and two of their children. Most of the victims' relatives who were in the courtroom sat silent and stared at Rader.

Rader was arrested Feb. 25. The onetime president of the church council at Christ Lutheran Church and Boy Scout leader, Rader admitted killing 10 people in the Wichita area between 1974 and 1991. The serial killer known as BTK -- the self-coined nickname that stands for "Bind, Torture, Kill" -- taunted media and police with cryptic messages. Sentencing was set for Aug. 25.

What is the exact meaning of BTK as mentioned in the news?

A.Bad, Taunt, Cruel.

B.Bang, Troll, Keep.

C.Bind, Torture, Kill.

听力原文: Are you looking for the next big idea to strengthen your firm's marketing progra
m? Consider implementing a few basic marketing techniques on a consistent basis to reap more favorable results. Here are two secrets for you to keep in mind. First, know your clients: Analyze your client base by industry, geographic area, sales, fees collected, and realization. This will identify your "bread and butter" clients and potential niche markets, enabling you to describe the type of new business prospects to pursue. Purchase a prospect list using the demographic data of your best clients and go after them. Knowing your clients will focus your marketing activities by helping you identify the publications your clients and prospects read, the organizations they join, their challenges and industry trends, and how your firm's services can solve their problems. Second, know your internal strengths/skills: What are the strengths and weaknesses of your firm? In which areas might you have a competitive advantage? What are the marketing and sales skills of your partners and staff? Create a matrix and evaluate your people on a variety of skills including networking, generating leads, cross-selling, closing the sale, public speaking, writing, and one-on-one meetings.

What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.How to establish a company.

B.How to strengthen a marketing program.

C.How to analyze product sales.

D.How to keep self-esteem.

Finding a good work-at-home job is not easy. Altho...

Finding a good work-at-home job is not easy. Although you see all the online advertising, there aren't that many of them. Those that are available may require that you live in a certain area or spend at least some time in the office. Others may be only part-time jobs. Keep in mind that the skills needed for home employment are similar to those needed for working in an office. You'll also need a home office with a high speed internet connection, phone, fax, computer, printer, and other basic office equipment. To get started, consider your job search as your job. Spend as many hours per week on your job search as you would spend working. If you're looking for full-time work, you should be spending fill-time hours seeking a job. Networking (人际关系) remains the top way to find a job and it does work. Develop contacts—friends, family, even the other job seekers—anyone who might have the information you need. You can take a direct approach and ask for job information or try a less formal approach and ask for information and advice. Contact everyone you know and tell them you want to work from home. You may be surprised by the people they know and the job information they can provide.

According to the first paragraph, it is not easy to find good work-at-home jobs because ______.

A、they are seldom advertised online or in newspapers

B、they may require that you live in a certain place

C、you are always asked to work full-time

D、you need to have a college degree
