阅读理解:结合上下文内容补全填空。

操作提示:通过下拉选项框选择正确的词汇。

Mary, the 17-year-old daughter of a rich textile(纺织品) owner was freed(释放) by her kidnappers(绑匪) after 118 days. She said she spent most of the time in a tent in the woods{with; and; although}one foot tied to a tree. She was freed late on Friday{so; after; unless}her family paid a total of $1.8 million, the largest ransom (赎金) ever paid in Italy.

“I was treated{good; bad; well},” the girl told the reporter during the interview, “Biscuits, cakes, often hot food and at times beef.” She said her nearly four months in trouble was spent in a tent set up in a wooded area.

“I never saw their faces and{when; that; which}they spoke, they changed their voices in nasal tones (speaking through nose passage) on purpose ,” she said. “They kept repeating that the only thing they wanted was the money and that they didn't want to have{nothing; something; anything}to do with me or my family.”

The high school student, who was seized by three face-covered and armed men on July 2, 1983 from her family's country villa in Tuscany, said she still had no idea where exactly she had been held.

B

When her five daughters were young, Helene An always told them that there was strength in unity (团结). To show this, she held up one chopstick, representing one person. Then she easily broke it into two pieces. Next, she tied several chopsticks together, representing a family. She showed the girls it was hard to break the tied chopsticks. This lesson about family unity stayed with the daughters as they grew up.

Helene An and her family own a large restaurant business in California. However, when Helene and her husband Danny left their home in Vietnam in 1975, they didn‘t have much money. They moved their family to San Francisco. There they joined Danny‘s mother, Diana, who owned a small Italian sandwich shop. Soon afterwards, Helene and Diana changed the sandwich shop into a small Vietnamese restaurant. The five daughters helped in the restaurant when they were young. However, Helene did not want her daughters to always work in the family business because she thought it was too harEventually the girls all graduated from college and went away to work for themselves, but one by one, the daughters returned to work in the family business. They opened new restaurants in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Even though family members sometimes disagreed with each other, they worked together to make the business successful. Daughter Elisabeth explains, "Our mother taught us that to succeed we must have unity, and to have unity we must have peace. Without the strength of the family, there is no business."

Their expanding business became a large corporation in 1996, with three generations of Ans working together. Now the Ans‘ corporation makes more than $20 million each year. Although they began with a small restaurant, they had big dreams, and they worked together. Now they are a big success.

I once knew an old man whose bad memory made him famous. John Smith was so forgetful that
he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes — even his meals. Once he forgot he ate breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbours, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!"

Since Smith was a professor at a well known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment. It wasn't that he was not claver, as some critical people tended to say, last very, very absentminded. One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.

The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.

"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town. " "What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name ! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."

Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time. "What is the matter now? " "As you told me, I didn’t forget where I put the name of that town, but I forgot where I left our children!"

This passage is mainly ______.

A.a careless professor

B.a famous professor

C.a foolish professor

D.a forgetful professor

In the second journey to the East I had not come without some precautions. I had a secret
interview with one of our best medicine men, and when I left his wigwam carried securely in my sleeve a tiny bunch of magic roots. This possession assured me of friends wherever I should go. I believed it so much that I wore it through ail the school routine for more than a year.

At the close of high school, I chose to continue college career against my mother's will. I had written for her approval, but in her reply I found no encouragement. She called my notice to her neighbors' children, who had completed their education in three years. They had returned to their homes, and were then talking English with the frontier settlers.

Despite all the difficulties, I entered an oratorical contest among the various classes. In the chapel the classes assembled together, with their invited guests. One after another I saw and heard the orators. Each contestant received a loud burst of applause, and some were cheered heartily. Too soon my turn came, and I paused a moment behind the curtains for a deep breath. After my concluding words, I heard the same applause that the others had received.

Upon my retreating steps, I was astounded to receive from my fellow-students a large bouquet of roses tied with flowing ribbons. With the lovely flowers I fled from the stage. This friendly token was a rebuke to me for the hard feelings I had borne them.

Later, the decision of the judges awarded me the first place. A few weeks afterwards, I appeared as the college representative in another contest between different colleges.

Here again was a strong prejudice against my people. After the orations were delivered, some college rowdies threw out a large white flag, with a drawing of a most forlorn Indian gift. Under this they had printed in bold black letter words that ridiculed the college which was represented by a "squaw". Such worse than barbarian rudeness embittered me.

There were two prizes given that night, and one of them was mine! The evil spirit laughed within me when the white flag dropped out of sight, and the hands which hurled it hung limp in defeat.

Leaving the crowd as quickly as possible, I was soon in my room. The rest of the night I sat in an armchair and gazed into the crackling fire. I laughed no more in triumph when thus alone. The little taste of victory did not satisfy a hunger in my heart. In my mind I saw my mother far away on the Western plains, and she was holding a charge against me.

What is the purpose of the bunch of magic roots?

A.Help her in her studies.

B.Bring her good health.

C.Make her very rich.

D.Bring her good friends.
