English people are always saying "please", "thank you" and" sorry". I do, too. It is a habit. Nothing more. I think we all understand it. Anyway, there is very little harm in it. On the other hand, some people can get very worried if a foreigner forgets to say" please" when he is asking for something.
Nowadays it is thought rather formal to shake hands if you are not on business. You can tell a great deal from the way people shake hands. Some people try to break your fingers. With others, it feels as if you are holding a wet fish. So the best kind of handshake is firm but gentle with a smile at the end of the arm. It is also worth remembering that people tend not to shake hands when parting nor if they have already met. Close friends or relatives may exchange a quick kiss in the check or lips when meeting or parting, but there is rarely kissing or embracing between men. Men still tend to open doors for women in public. Some girls cannot stand that, so nowadays you find more and more women open doors for men. I like opening doors for anyone, even for myself.
The most often used English words to show good manners are ______.
A.Hi, Thank you and Bye
B.Please, Thank you and OK
C.Hello, Bye and Thank you
D.Thank you, Sorry and Please

A fifth grader gets a homework assignment to select his future career path from a
list of occupations. He ticks “astronaut” but quickly adds “scientist” to the list and
selects it as well. The boy is convinced that if he reads enough, he can explore as
many careerpathsas he likes. And so he reads-everything from encyclopedias to
science fiction novels. He reads so passionately that his parents have to institute a “no
reading policy” at the dinner table.
That boy was Bill Gates, and he hasn’t stopped reading yet-not even after
becoming one of the most successful people on the planet. Nowadays, his reading
material has changed from science fiction and reference books: recently, he revealed
that he reads at least 50 nonfiction books a year. Gates chooses nonfiction titles
because they explain how the world works. “Each book opens upnewavenues of
knowledge to explore”, Gates says.

听力原文: When basketball was invented in 1891 in America, it was intended to be an outdoor game, which could be played during the severe American winters, when the ground was too frozen or snowy for baseball. Nowadays the game is played on specially designed basketball courts all over the world. It is a popular game because it demands speed and skill from its players, and is very exciting to watch. Most American cities have basketball teams. The teams often have names such as the Tigers' which suggest speed and physical power.
Basketball is played by two opposing teams, each of five players, on a rectangular court which is 26 meters long by 14 meters wide. Variations of 2 meters on the length and 1 meter on the width are permitted. The object of the game is to score points by shooting the ball into the opponent's goal. This used to be a wooden basket fixed high on a pole, but nowadays it is a metal hoop (still often referred to as the basket), 45 centimeters in diameter, which is secured horizontally with a net attachment beneath, 3.05 meters above the ground on a vertical board. The height of the hoop means that basketball teams are usually made up of players who are taller than average.
Like all competitive sports, basketball is governed by strict rules. Many of these roles relate to the handling of the ball. Each player tries to tap the ball to a member of his or her own team, who may then bounce, pass or shoot the ball. No player may run holding the ball, but he or she may dribble it by bouncing it on the court, with one hand only, as he or she runs.
When basketball was invented, it was intended to be

The British policeman has several nicknames(绰号), but the most frequently used are "copper" and "bobby". The first name comes from the verb "cop" meaning "to take" or "capture", and the second comes from the first name of Sir Robert Peel, a 19th century politician(政治家), who was the founder of the police force. An early nickname for the policeman was "peeler", but this name has died out.

So much emphasis is placed nowadays on oral skills in all area of work, study and lecture, that the training course has proved very popular and last year I run a week's presentation skills course at the annual International Summer School.
After a shorter introductory meeting on the Saturday night when Bridget Stevens, Summer School Director greeted all the new students attending a wide variety of courses. And the courses began in earnest with a two-hour session the following morning. Then followed full days, 9:30 a.m.~3:30 p.m., with the examination taking place on the fifth day(Friday).
In order to give the students a change from my voice in this very concentrated week, Irene Randine, a very experienced lecturer, was invited to give two sessions, first on "Voice" and later on "Reading Aloud", both of which were a success.
The group was from a variety of countries. We have required that only fluent English speakers would be accepted and all were competent communicators.
To my mind the first session is always the most important, for it is at that point we take stock of each other, students and lecturer. During the next four days the pressure is intense as we cover the various situations in which speakers might find themselves.
Of course, time has to be given to discuss examination and by Thursday I expect to see a presentation from each of the students.
Why did the training program play such an important role nowadays?
A.Because International Summer School is popular.
B.Because the training program has proved popular.
C.Because so much emphasis is placed on the popular area of work, study and lecture.
D.Because people pay more attention to oral skills in all area of work, study and lecture.

听力原文: Yoga becomes very popular nowadays, but it is important that we get to know a few facts about it. First of all, it is not a religion. Yoga is a way of life and can serve only to improve your present way of life. Yoga is an exact science and a delicate art. Secondly, be as mechanical as possible. Never strain or pull too much. Forcing will cause your body to resist and will actually slow down or even prevent your progress, so go gently. Stretch up to the point where it would start to hurt. then stop immediately. The key is the proper breathing through the nostrils with the mouth shut. Usually it is best to practice alone in a room with fresh air, wearing little or no clothing. Never practice oh a full stomach because an empty stomach permits greater flexibility. Exercise will benefit your general health. Yoga cannot add or reduce pounds from your figure; only eating less or more food can do that. Always remember that diet affects weight, while exercise affects shape. Neither can do the job of the other.

A.A delicate art.
B.A way of life.
C.An exact science.
