Michelangelo on Marriage

A priest, his friend, said to him: "It is a pity that you have not taken a wife, so that you might have had many children and left them all your honorable labours." And Michelangelo replied: "I have only too much of a wife in this art of mine, who has always kept me in tribulation, and my children shall be the works that I may leave, which, even if they are naught, will live a while."

[Vasari, Lives, 1568.]

Josef Albers (1888—1976)

Albers lived in America nearly half of his long life and taught a whole generation of American painters. Yet his work remained strongly European in its "relational" qualities and, even though he used a "centered image", the way he placed the bottom edges of the squares closer together created effects quite different from the symmetrical 1960s work of Stella and Judd. Albers applied his paint with a palette knife and deliberately left the edges rough, with a tooth for the interacting colours to bite on one another. He never used masking tape and his works are not hard edged (except in reproduction). The largest paintings are about three feet square; small by American standards. The values they affirm are not American values but European.

[From the book Josef Albers: A Retrospective, Guggenheim-Abrams.]

I was afraid. The truth is, I was afraid the day I walked into Stanford. And I was afraid
the day I walked out. I was scared of leaving the protective bubble of this place for places unknown, during uncertain economic times. And I was scared of squandering the incredible gift of my Stanford experience on pursuits that werent commensurate with expectations I, and others, had of me. I was scared of not doing it all, of making irrevocable mistakes. If youre scared today, let me ask you this: What will you do with your fear? Will you let it become a motivator, or an inhibitor? You are the only one who can answer that. But what I can offer as guidance, and reassurance, is a story: the story of one Stanford grads process of stumbling and searching to find a place in the world, oftentimes in the face of her fears.

听力原文: There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water hi
s flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and worn-out one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best. Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path. Sometimes the new bucket would say, "See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I dont know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!" And all that the old bucket could say was, "I know I am not very useful, but I can only do my best. I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least." One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, "You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path." Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden. Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard. 19. What was the old bucket ashamed of? 20. What was the new buckets main purpose of making conversations with the old one? 21. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?20.

A.To laugh at the old one.

B.To take pity on the old one.

C.To show off its beautiful looks.

D.To praise the gardener"s kindness.

Today, theres scarcely an aspect of our life that isnt being upended by the torrent of
information available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in constant touch with each other via electronic mail. "If the automobile and aerospace technology had exploded at the same pace as computer and information technology," says Microsoft, "a new car would cost about $2 and go 600 miles on a thimble of gas. And you could buy a Boeing 747 for the cost of a pizza." Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in producing goods and serving the needs of their customers. (47)Nothing like it has been seen since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when power-driven machines began producing more in a day than men could turn out in nearly a year. All the time spent online has left many young infotech workers without much time for life-or love-offline. (48)The U.S. free enterprise system, which reaches a frenzy in Silicon Valley, has recognized that the local love boat is taking on water and is rushing in to save the day. Dating services are approaching overload. Seminars and love doctors are teaching these rich, busy young singles how to find and capture their hearts desire in this romantic wasteland. And dot-com facilitators such as Matchmaker. com are struggling to bring the sexes together online. One reality that losers in this love bazaar must face is that they werent picked because they were out of shape. But not to worry since the Cyber Age has the answer to this one, too. Computerized fitness programs with audio, visual, and cyber personal trainers are ready to turn your home and treadmill into your own personal health club. Turn on it. comes "One-On-One Training" audio workouts and you can bend and stretch to your favorite music. (49)Its "Adventure" series video workouts will automatically adjust the speed and incline of your iFit-compatible treadmill as you gaze into your TV screen and experience the "beautiful rock formations of Utahs Red Rock" or "the tropical paradise of Hawaii". (50)Americans spend more on entertainment than on clothing or health care. and the convergence of computers and telecommunications is generating new ways to amuse ourselves undreamed of until now. The Internet is a land of endless amusements, and among the wildest is the Sims-simulations. These are about creating, managing, and controlling the lives of tiny computerized people.
