It is curious how often sympathy for the old and infirm takes a form. which actually humil

iates them. Their friends, with good will, sometimes lean forward to

rearrange their neckwear, touching their hair or patting their faces--things they would never presume to do, unasked, to one of their contemporaries. An equally

humiliating habit is to talk about old people in front of them as if they were not there, discussing their health. It is now universally accepted that children should be encouraged to do as much as they can for themselves in order to develop their brains and muscles, but so few

people today seem to have time to allow the elderly the same means of keeping their minds and muscles active. They perform. innumerable services for the old that they

would be much better left to do, even with a struggle, for themselves. Convenient flats, "motherly" visitors, or organized entertainments cannot make up for the fundamental need which must be satisfied--the need to retain to the end

of life human dignity and the respect of one's fellows. Many people are not aware that it is rather rude to ______.A.talk casually about old people in front of them as if they were not thereB.show sympathy for the oldC.take care of the old when they are not illD.pat the faces of the contemporaries

Montaigne's hold on his readers arises from many causes. There is his frank and curious se
lf-delineation. That interests, because it is the revelation of a very peculiar nature. Then there is the positive value of separate thoughts imbedded in his strange whimsicality and humor. Lastly, there is the perennial charm of style, which is never a separate quality, but rather the amalgam and issue of all the mental and moral qualities in a man's possession, and which bears the same relation to these that light bears to the mingled elements that make up the orb of the sun. And style, after all, rather than thought, is the immortal thing in literature. In literature, the charm of style. is indefinable, yet all-subduing, just as fine manners are in social life. In reality, it is not of so much consequence what you say, as how you say it. Memorable sentences are memorable on account of some irradiating word. "But Shadwell never deviates into sense, for instance." Young Roscius, in his provincial barn, will repeat you the great soliloquy of Hamlet, and although every word may be given with tolerable correctness, you find it just as commonplace as himself. The great actor speaks it, and you "read Shakespeare as by a flash of lightning". And it is in Montaigne's style, in the strange freaks and turnings of his thought, his constant surprises, his curious alternations of humor and melancholy, his careless, familiar form. of address, and the grace with which everything is done, that his charm lies, and which makes the hundredth perusal of him as pleasant as the first.

Literature lives because of the author's ______.

A.ideas

B.humor

C.surprises

D.style

听力原文: The lights have fused, the cooker is not working properly and you have just had
an electric shock. You may need an electrician. But before you decide to have the house rewired, stop for a moment and think how much you could save by doing the work yourself. Not knowing how to do it is no longer an excuse when there are a hundred and one books, magazines and manuals on the subject. Not is it difficult to find the right tools and materials nowadays, with at least one D.I.Y. shop in every town.

The do-it -yourself shop is a curious establishment. In it you can find anything from the tiniest screw to a self-assembly greenhouse. There is paint, glue, oil and wire for all purposes. There are tiles, selves, carpets and pipes of all shapes and sizes. You can even buy a complete bathroom suite in the larger self-service stores.

Today there is much more leisure time and, in many cases, much less money available. Do-it-yourself has become a money-saving hobby. It is no wonder that fewer tradesmen make a living from private homes. Pipes can be joined together by pushing, paint that can be rolled on doesn't drip, and holes can be drilled at the press of a button. Anyone can do it! Well, almost!

Why does the writer suggest that you should do the work yourself?.

A.You could save money.

B.There are many books magazines and manuals on the subject.

C.It is easy to find the right tools and materials nowadays..

D.All the reasons mentioned above.
