Passage One
Shortly after the war, my brother and I were invited to spend a few days' holiday with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He rented a cottage in the country, although he rarely spent much time there. The cottage, however, had no comfortable furniture in it, many of the windows were broken and the roof leaked, making the whole house damp.
On our first evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the stories our uncle had had to tell of his many adventures in distant countries. I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed, but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle's exciting tales.
He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had, when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.
"It sounds as if the roof has fallen in!" shouted my uncle, with a loud laugh.
When we got to the top of the stairs and opened the bedroom door, a strange sight met our eyes. A large part of the ceiling had collapsed (坍塌), falling right on to the pillow of my bed. I was glad that I had stayed up late to listen to my uncle's stories, otherwise I should certainly have been seriously injured, perhaps killed.
That night we all slept on the floor of the sitting room downstairs not wishing to risk our lives by sleeping under a roof which might at any moment collapse on our heads. We left for London the very next morning and my uncle gave up his cottage in the country. This was not the kind of adventure he cared for, either!
What does the writer say about his uncle during the war?
A.He had a lot of adventures.
B.He fought as a soldier.
C.He made a lot of money.
D.He enjoyed many of his adventures.
M: Well, Thanksgiving Day is one of the oldest American holidays. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
W: How is it spent? For example, in your family?
M: In my family, we always go to my grandmother's house on Thanksgiving Day. Everyone is glad to see everyone else and there is a busy time for talking. After dinner, no one can move and we all sit around and talk, play word games, or tell jokes until it is time to go home. It is always difficult to leave because Thanksgiving Day is one of the few days of the year when the whole family gets together.
W: It sounds really interesting!
M: It is. By the way, you are welcome to be our guest next Thanksgiving Day.

You can' t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you're likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she'll probably insist on paying her share of the bill.
It' s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man' s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.

M: Not really, but I guess I don't really have too much choice, do I? And it's going to be particularly hard to get back to work since I just had the most fantastic vacation ever.
W: Really? What did you do?
M: I went boating on the Klamath River?
W: Is that so interesting?
M: Yeah. The boat is quite long and narrow, used to be used by the Indians. Controlling it is not easy.
W: Weren't you scared?
M: At first, I was. But after I learned some techniques for controlling it, it wasn't so bad. We didn't start out on the river. We had three whole days of instruction in a shallow pool first. Then, when we finally got out on the river, I felt ready for it.
W: Did you spend the nights camping outside on the ground? That alone would make the trip unappealing to me.
M: Oh, no. The accommodations were fantastic. Each person on the trip had a private cabin, and the facilities are good. The food is also good.
W: Now, that part of the trip does sound good to me. But I don't think I'd like the part that involves riding through rough water in a small boat.
M: Oh, you should try it; I know you'd like it. I'm going to do it again myself, as soon as I can afford to spend the time and the money.
