阅读材料,回答题。

In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the early postwar era(战后时期), there was a quite widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are facing with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over trusting (过分信任) of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons maybe pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction(失灵).

Obviously, there would be no point in investing(投入) in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

What is the main purpose of this passage? 查看材料

A.To look back to the early days of computers

B.To explain what technical problems may occur with computers

C.To discourage unnecessary investment in computers

D.To warn against the blindness to the probable shortcomings of computers

阅读材料,回答题。

Step Back in Time

Do you know that we live a lot longer now than the people who were born before us? One hundred years ago the average woman lived to be 45. But now, she can live until at least 80.

One of the main reasons for people living longer is that we know how to look after ourselves better. We know which foods are good for us and what we have to eat to make sure our bodies get all the healthy things they need.We know why we sometimes get ill and what to do to get better again. And we know how important it is to do lots of exercise to keep our hearts beating healthily.

But in order that we don"t slip back into bad habits, let"s have a look at what life was like 100 years ago.

Families had between 15 and 20 children, although many babies didn"t live long.Children suffered from lots of diseases, especially tickets (佝偻病 ) and scurvy (坏血病) , which are both caused by bad diets. This is because many families were very poor and not able to feed their children well.

Really poor families who lived in crowded cities like London and Manchester often slept standing up,bending over a piece of string, because there was no room for them to lie down.

People didn"t have fridges until the 1920s. They kept fresh food cold by storing it on windowsills (窗台板 ) , blocks of ice, or even burying it in the garden.

Some children had to start work at the age of seven or eight to earn money for their parents. If you had lived 100 years ago, you might well be selling matchsticks (火柴杆) (a job done by many children ) or working with your dad by now.

16. On average women lived longer than men 100 years ago. 查看材料

B.Wrong

C.Not mentioned

阅读材料,回答题。

If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still bereading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what news is what affects our lives the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It&39;s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feeling really are.

It&39;s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read sports and international news, etc.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than picture son a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

What is the best title for the passage? 查看材料

A.The Best Way to Get News

阅读材料,回答题。

What do we mean by a satisfactory standard of living? Obviously, it must include the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing and shelter. To get these necessities on regular basis, a person must have a reliable income. But we have other needs which would probably also be included as basic, such as health and education facilities.

We may think of all of these as our needs. Yet most of us would be far from satisfied if we had nothing more than these which are supplied for us. We all enjoy extra income to spend on things like books, sports or hobbies. Sometimes we save some of this extra income to pay for future expense of this type on holidays. So we must add our wants to our basic needs. Our standard of living is the degree, to which these needs and wants are satisfied.

But as time goes on, what we think of as our basic needs changes. Twenty years ago a television would have been a luxury, and still is in many countries now. Even now we cannot say it is a need in the same sense as food, clothing and shelter. Yet if most of the people of a country have one, it comes to be accepted as a need. It is possible therefore to have food, clothing and shelter and still be poor by the standards of our own society.

What we need in life is divided into __________ according to this article. 查看材料

A.the basic necessities and luxury

B.many kinds of need such as food, clothing and houses

C.four groups the basic necessities, luxury, reliable income and future expense

D.the basic necessities and reliable income

Long bus Ride

Long bus rides are like television shows. They have A.beginning, amiddle, and an end--with commercials thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. Theyhappen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes A.billB.oard glides by outside thebus window. "buy Super Clean Toothpaste. " "Drink Good&39;n Wet Root beer. " "Fill up with Pa-cificGas. " Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off, are you spared theunending cry of "You Need It! buy It Now!"

The beginning of the ride is comfortaB.le and somewhat exciting, even if you&39;ve traveled thatway before. Usually some things have changed--new houses, new buildings, sometimes even anew road. The bus driver has A.style. of driving and it&39;s fun to try to figure it out the first hour orso. If the driver is particularly reckless or daring, the ride can be as thrilling as A.suspense story.

Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left-hand lane?

After awhile, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for awhile helps pass the middlehours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. but you&39;ve got to be careful ofwhat kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops.

The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there&39;sakind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat, of course, has become harder as the hourshave passed. by now you&39;ve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands crossed behind your head.

The end comes just at the right time. There are just no more ways to sit.

According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on A.long bus trip? 查看材料

阅读材料,回答题。

How can we get rid of garbage? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs?

These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that man might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source, and at the same time it can save the land to hold garbage.

For a long time, people buried garbage or dumped (倾倒) it on empty land. Now, empty land is scarce. But more and more garbage is produced each year. However, garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas; but they are chemically similar to these fossil (化石)fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.

Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants bum almost 2 million metric tons of the cities garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil. Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.

What two problems can man solve by burning garbage? 查看材料

A.The shortage of energy and air pollution

B.The shortage of energy and the land to hold garbage

C.Air pollution and the shortage of fossil fuel

D.Air pollution and the shortage of land to hold garbage

My father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first jobwas to drive the oxen that plowed the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with abroomstick. For $1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks.

It was very tediou work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Be-cause the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work ashard as I could. I&39; ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful andloyal to the people you work for.. More important, I earned my pay.

I was only six years old, but I was doing a man&39; s job. Our family needed every dollar wecould make because my father never earned more than $18 a week. Our home was a three-roomwood shack with dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money tohelp my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem, one of the mostimportant things a person can have.

When I was seven, I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down thefairway and spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant youwere fired, so I never miss one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dream of making thousands ofdollars playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle.

The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guavalimb and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finallyI dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devo-tion and intensity I learned working in the field--except now I was driving golf balls with club, notoxen with a broomstick.

A.To stand down the fairway at a golf course

B.To spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them

Transport and Trade

1Transport is one of the aids to trade.by moving goods from places where they are plentiful toplaces where they are scarce, transport adds to their value. The more easily goods can be broughtover the distance that separates producer and consumer, the better for trade. When there were norailways, no good roads, no canals, and only small sailing ships, trade was on asmall scale.

2The great advances made in transport during the last two hundred years were accompanied byabig increase in trade. bigger and faster ships enabled atrade in meat to develop between britainand New Zealand, for instance. Quicker transport makes possible mass-production and big busi-ness, drawing supplies from, and selling goods to, all parts of the globe. big factories could not ex-ist without transport to carry the large number of workers they need to and from their homes. bigcity stores could not have developed unless customers could travel easily from the suburbs andgoods were delivered to their homes. big cities could not survive unless food could be brought fromadistance.

3Transport also prevents waste. Much of the fish landed at the ports would be wasted if it couldnot B.e taken quickly to inland towns. Transport has given us amuch greater variety of foods and goods since we no longer have to live on what is produced locally. Foods which at one time could be obtained only during apart of the year can now be obtained all through the year. Transport hasraised the standard of living.

4by moving fuel, raw materials, and even power, for example, through electriccables, transporthas led to the estaB.lishment of industries and trade in areas where they would have been impossi-ble before. Districts and countries can concentrate on making things which they can do better andmore cheaply than others and can then exchange them with one another. The cheaper and quickertransport becomes, the longer the distance over which goods can profitably be carried. Countrieswith poor transport have alower standard of living.

5Commerce requires not only the moving of goods and people but also the carrying of messagesand information. Means of communication, like telephones, cables and radio, send informationabout prices, supplies, and changing conditions in different parts of the worlD. In this way, ad-vanced communication systems also help to develop trade.

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races.

Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called "the weaker sex", or, if men want to please them, "the fair sex". But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers .And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women&39; s bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women&39;s speeds are always slower than men&39; s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first "Tarzan" in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone(荷尔蒙) injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problem. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!

Women are called "the weaker sex" because __________. 查看材料

A.women do as much work as men

B.people think women are weaker than men

C.sport is easier for men than for women

D.in sport the two sexes are always together
