Read this extract: The largest known eagle ever documented, this fearsome creature weighed up to fifteen kilograms and sported wings spanning two to three metres in diameter. Although this wingspan is comparatively small (the Wandering Albatross and Andean Condor, for instance, each have wing spans in excess of three metres), the Haast’s eagle possessed a much larger body mass to wing ratio. While stubbier wings made the eagle ill-suited to prolonged flight, they did enable the Haast’s eagle to nimbly and swiftly manoeuvre its large frame around trees, which would have been vital for pursuing prey through New Zealand’s dense forest and scrubland. The most impressive aspect of the bird’s anatomy, however, was its enormous talons. At almost 23 centimetres in length, these are comparable to those of some wild cats and have justifiably earned the Haast’s eagle the nickname ‘Tiger of the Skies’. Which of the following is NOT true?

A、The Haast’s eagle could only fly for short distances.

B、The Haast’s eagle was adapted to flying through forests.

C、The Haast’s eagle’s wings were shorter than other large birds.

D、The Haast’s eagle had small but very efficient claws.

Stone Hill Mall has fewer large department stores than most malls, but, instead, features
more than 100 small specialty shops, while the few that are not used yet will be filled as soon as the mall's owners find proprietors who fit the mall's image. One thing that makes Stone Hill Mall popular was that all of the stores remain open from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. , Monday through Friday. This favourable start has certainly been advantageous thanks to such features as its being the only shopping centre in the area to provide free baby-sitting for children from two to eight years old and its offering restaurants to suit every pock- et, with the possible exception of the highly budget-conscious. Furthermore, as far as movie en tertainmetn is concerned, Stone Hill Mall tops Westgate Mall, which looked very impressive when it opened last year, with three separate cinemas.

Besides, the air-conditioning system makes sure a comfortable inside temperature of 25 degrees centigrade no matter what the weather is like outside, and in addition to its three beautiful fountains, the mall has a quiet garden area with comfortable benches and chairs for shoppers who have become tired.

One complaint about Stone Hill Mall is that it is located outside the city, but there is a regular bus service between the mall and the city centre. A further complaint might be that, although the mall is surrounded by trees to mix it with the scenery, it will be some years before these can effectively make the main buildings and the vast parking lot a part of the area around.

Stone Hill Mall is different from other mails because it has ______.

A.more large department stores

B.more empty space to rent

C.many shops selling special goods

D.shops selling expensive goods

The forest from which Man takes his timber is the tallest and most impressive plant commun
ity on Earth. In terms of Man's brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, save for the seasonal growth and fall of the leaves, but to forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events.

No wooded landscape we see today has been forest for all time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth's surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions change in favour of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession.

First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock. Slowly, the acids preduced by these organisms crack the rock surface, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root-hold. Ferns may follow and, with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form. a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination-closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years.

Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroy it outright and settlers may cut it down to gain land for pasture or cultivation. If the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing nmch faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals.

For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine, storing energy and many elements essential for life.

What does the forest strike mankind as permanent?

A.The trees are in community.

B.The forest is renewed each season.

C.Man's life is short in comparison.

D.It is an essential part our lives.
