Passage 1 Falls are the number one cause of death to old people at home. Most old people can live safely at home if they make a few changes. Falls are common as people are getting older. Up to half of home accidents could be prevented by making some very simple changes. Here are a few suggestions. Mark trouble spots with bright tapes. The first and last steps on stairs are usually high-risk accident are- as. Applying bright tapes and using bright light in these areas would make these spots easier to see. Put grab bars(扶手) in the bathroom. A large number of falls occur in the bathroom. This is unfortunate(不幸的) because it's easy to make the area safe from accidents. Putting grab bars in the bathroom gives people something to hang on to. Invest in a personal alarm. A personal alarm can be started if a person falls or otherwise gets in trouble. With the push of a button, the alarm automatically sends a signal, which gets someone to call and see if the person needs help. 题目: 1. By making some very simple changes at home, old people ______.

Have you ever heard of Angel Falls(瀑布)? It's the highest waterfall in the world, deep in the jungles(丛林) of Venezuela. Few people have ever seen Angel Falls. It's very hard to get there. If you went by land, you would have to travel for weeks through thick jungles. If you went by plane from Caracas, a city on the northern coast, it would take about four hours.

What would it be like to take a trip by plane from Caracas to the falls? For hundreds of miles you would fly southeast over green plains. Then the land would become higher, and you would see mountains with forests. Soon the land would level out to high plateaus(高原). Finally, you would fly toward a deep canyon(峡谷) with steep, rocky sides. Suddenly you would see a silver thread in the distance. Then as your plane flew closer, you would see the waterfall more clearly. You would see water falling over a half a mile straight down the cliff. It is a sight you would never forget.

No one knew about this high waterfall until 1930. In that year James Angel, an American pilot, flew over the area. As he was flying over the mountains and canyons, he suddenly saw a waterfall. It was an impressive sight: the water seemed to be dropping straight out of the clouds.

In 1941 an American expedition(抢险队) explored and measured the falls. From the top to the bottom, the water falls more than 3,200 feet. These falls are over 1,000 feet higher than any other falls in the world.

Where is Angel Falls?

A.In America.

B.In Caracas.

C.In Venezuela.

D.No one knows.

What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same reason anything falls to Earth. Th
e Earth's Gravity(重力) pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets or ice crystals. Why doesn't rain or snow fall constantly from all clouds? The droplets or ice crystals in clouds are exceedingly small. The effect of gravity on them is minute. Air currents move and lift droplets so that the net downward displacement is zero, even though the droplets are in constant motion.

Droplets and ice crystals behave somewhat like dust in the air made visible in a shaft(束) of sunlight. To the casual observer, dust seems to act in a totally random fashion, moving about wildly without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The cloud droplet of average size is only 1/2,500 inch in diameter. (78)It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it does not fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger can it fall form. the cloud. The average raindrop contains a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size large enough to fall out is the cause of rain.

What is the main topic of the passage?

A.The mechanics of rain.

B.The climate of North America.

C.How gravity affects air current.

D.Types of clouds.
