第1题

Psychologists now believe that noise has a considerable effect on people’s attitudes and behavior. Experiments have proved that in noisy situations (even temporary ones ), people behave more irritably and less cooperatively; in more permanent noisy situations, many people cannot work hard, and they suffer from severe anxiety as well as other psychologecal problems. However psychologists distinguish between“sound”and “noise”.“Sound”is measured physically in decibels.“Noise”cannot be measured in the same way because it refers to the psychological effect of sound and its level of “intensity”depends on the situation. Thus, for passengers at an airport who expect to hear airplanes taking off and landing, there may be a lot of sound, but not much noise (that is, they are not botered by the noise). By contrast, if you are at a concert and two people behind you are whispering you feel they are talking noisily even if there is not much sound. You notice the noise because it affects you psychologically. Both sound and noise can have negative effects, but what is most important is if the person has control over the sound. People walking down the street with earphones listening to music that they ecjoy, are receiving a lot of decibels of sound, but they are probably happy hearing sounds that they control. On the other hand, people in the street without earphones must tolerate a lot of noise which they have no control over. It is noise pollution that we need to control in order to help people live more happily.

According to the passage people_________.

A.can not work better in a noisy situation

B.will suffer from complete deafness because of noise pollution

C.can be psychologically affected by working in very noisy factories

D.may cooperate well in a noisy surrounding

“Sound”, as defined by the psychologist,_________.A.can be measured in the same way that “noise” in measured

B.may be extremely harmful to health

C.is not at all different from “noise”

D.can be measured by machines

Peple waiting at an airport_________.A.enjoy hearing airplanes taking off and landing

B.are usually not troubled by the noise

C.can easily tell sound from noise

D.are often physically affected by the noise

People enjoy listenting to music________.A.though they are receiving a lot of decibels of sound in fact

B.because it does not have any negative effect

C.because they do not have to tolerate the noise around them

D.even though it is sometimes unpleasant hearing strange sounds

We can conclude from the passage that we need to control noise pollution if__________.A.we want to stay both psychologically and physically healthy

B.we don’t want to be physically dent(削弱)

C.we want to cooperate well

D.we don’t want to be anxious

阅读理解。
"The age of melancholy" is how psychologist Daniel Goleman describes our age. People today experience

more depression (feeling of sadness) than older generations, though the technological wonders help us every

day. It might be because of them.

Our lifestyles are increasingly driven by technology. Our days are filled with phones, computers and the

Internet. There is a constant need to check for texts and emails, to update Facebook, MySpace and Linkedin

profiles and to acquire the latest notebook or 3G cell phone.

Are we being served by these technological wonders or have we become enslaved by them? I study the

psychology of technology, and it seems to me that we are sleepwalking into a world where technology is

severely affecting our well-being. Technology can be hugely useful in the fast-paced modern living, butwe

need to stop it from taking over.

For many of us, it is becoming increasingly difficult to control the impulse to check our inbox yet again or

see whether the headlines have changed since we looked last time. Our children are in a similar position. In

many homes, the computer, with which we work and play, has become the centre of attention.

How does this arise, and what is it doing to us? People who place a high value on material goals are

unhappier than those who are less materialistic.

Our culture also Constantly reminds us that time is money. This indicates a need for total efficiency (效

率), which is the reason for us to allow laptop computers and mobile phones to blur the separation, between

work and home. As one unhappy human resource manager in a high-tech company 'put it, "They gave me

a mobile phone so they can own me 24 hours a day, and a potable computer, so my office is now with me

all the time-I cannot break out of this. pressure." Sound familiar?

Psychologists generally believe that the lack of a clear separation between work and home greatly damages

our relationships with loved ones. It also makes us quite likely to focus on the here and now at the expense

of long-term goals.

Modern society is in danger of exchanging standard of living for quality of life. We need ways to help

recover those increasingly large parts of our lives that have been controlled by technology, to regain mastery

over technology and learn to use it in a healthy and positive way.

1. Why does the author mention Daniel Goleman's words "the age of melancholy"?
A. To prove the point that people are addicted to advanced technology.

B. To introduce his idea of a more depressed society due to technology.

C. To introduce his view about the advantage of technological wonders.

D. To prove that modern people are puzzled by the technological wonders.

2. By saying that "we need to stop it from taking over" in paragraph 3, the author means _____.
A. we should stop using these technological wonders

B. we should use these technological wonders wisely

C. we are severely affected by these technological wonders

D. we are frequently trapped in these technological wonders

3. What does the underlined word"it" in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The lack of a clear separation between work and home.

B. The pressure that the manager cannot break out of.

C. The need for total efficiency in modern life.

D. The high value placed on material goals.

4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Sad Feeling in Advanced Society

B. Standard of Living or Quality of Life?

C. Technology Wonders Bring New Lifestyle

D. Free Yourself: from Control by Technology

Women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were 30 percent less likely to have memory decline at age 65 than whose who drank one cup or less daily. And the benefit increased with age. Women over age 80 who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were about 70 percent less likely to have memory decline than those who drank one cup or less. the researchers said.

Caffeinated tea had the same effect in the women. the study found, although more was needed to get the same caffeine boost. "Count roughly two cups of tea for a cup of coffee," said study leader Karen Ritchie of INSERM, the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research. But the researchers didn&39;t find a similarly protective effect in men, although other studies have found a benefit to males.

How might caffeine help ward off cognitive decline? "It is a cognitive stimulant." said Ritchie. It also helps to reduce levels of the protein called beta amyloid in the brain. she said. "whose accumulation is responsible for Alzheimer&39;s disease but which also occurs in normal aging."

Ritchie said she wasn&39;t sure why men in the study didn&39;t benefit from caffeine. "Our hypothesis is that either women metabolize caffeine differently than men, or there may be an interaction of the caffeine with the sex hormones.the estrogen-progesterone balance," she said.

The French study confirms previous research, said William Scott. professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. who has researched caffeine&39;s beneficial effects against Parkinson&39;s disease, also a neurodegenerative disorder.

As for caffeine only protecting women, Scott noted that just 2,800 of the 7,000 study participants were men. and the results might have differed if more men were included.

A study published in February in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked at 676 healthy men and found that regular coffee drinkers had a lower rate of cognitive decline over a 10-year follow-up than those who didn&39;t drink coffee. Those who drank three cups daily had the least signs of decline. Both Scott and Ritchie agreed that more study is needed. Ritchie&39;s research will next look at the relationship between caffeine and Alzheimer&39;s.
