And what about romance? Is it possible to make a good judgment in such a short time? After all, people say you can't hurry love. However, Britain will soon have its first marriage from a speed dating.

The Sahara Desert

The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. It stretches across Africa from Senegal to Egypt. The Sahara Desert is an unfriendly environment. During the day it"s very hot, and at night it"s sometimes very cold. It is also difficult to find water in the Sahara.

In 2006, Kevin Lin, Ray Zahab, and Charlie Engle decided to do something very difficult.

They made the decision to run across the Sahara Desert 4,300 miles (6,920krn). It seemed impossible to do, but they wanted to try. The three men liked to test themselves, and this would be a very big test.

On the morning of November 2, Kevin, Ray, and Charlie started their trip across the Sahara.

Every morning they began running at 5:00. At 11 a.m. they stopped and rested until 5 p.m. Then they ran again until 9:30 in the evening. Each day they ran about 40 miles (64 km). Every day it was the same thing. They got up and ran. They listened to music on their iPods, and they ran and ran.

Kevin, Ray, and Charlie needed to eat a lot of food during their trip. Most people need about 2,000 calories of food each day. Kevin, Ray, and Charlie needed between 6,000 and 9,000 calories every day. That"s a lot of food! They also needed to drink a lot of water.

The three men had some problems on their trip, and many times they wanted to quit and go home. It was often very hot (140~F/60~C) during the day, and the heat made them sick. Their legs and feet hurt. Sometimes it was very windy, and they couldn"t see. One time they got lost. But they didn"t quit. After 111 days, Kevin, Ray; and Charlie successfully finished their trip across the Sahara Desert. They hugged each other and put their hands in the water of the Red Sea. Then they ran to a hotel to take a long shower.

It‘s not always hot in the Sahara Desert. 查看材料

Valentine's Day is on 14, February each year. It is a day for lovers, and one of the loveliest holidays in the United States. At present, it is quite popular all over the world.

The origin of the Valentine's Day is not well known for most of people. Even very few Americans know the story of Valentine's Day. However, there are a lot of stories about it. One English story tells that birds select their mates on February 14. Another story says that more than 2, 000 yearn ago the ancient Romans celebrated a holiday for lovers. As part of the celebration, girls wrote their names on pieces of paper and put them in a large container. Boys reached their hands into the container and pulled one out. The girl whose name was written on the paper became his lover or sweet heart for a year. Then came a Roman priest Valentine, who secretly married many young lovers against the Roman king's order. At that time, the Roman Emperor wanted all the young men to fight for him. So he made the law that didn't permit young men to get married. As a priest, Valentine helped young people by giving wedding ceremony for them. The Roman Emperor got angry and ordered the killing of Valentine on February 14, 269 A.D. This story is generally considered to be the most impossible, for the priest's name Valentine.

It is very popular to send cards decorated with hearts and flowers to express love. Today many Americans like to exchange humorous cards with husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, relatives, and even special friends. Some enjoy the joke of sending "Guess Who" cards to a person he or she secretly admires. Sometimes they put their love message in a heart-shaped box of chocolates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons (丝带). Candy, perfume, jewelry or a picture with a heart and Cupid (the Roman God of love) armed with bow and arrow are also sent to express love. This story began about 10 years ago. I was coming out of a very bad marriage. For seven long years my husband spent his every waking moment telling me just what was wrong with me. When I finally asked for a divorce, he answered by telling me that I would never find anyone to love me because I was just so unattractive. This went on for about two years. One night one of my friends convinced me to go out with her. We went to a nightclub and that was when I met him.

Clint was playing a game with a girl, I sat in the corner watching him. I didn't feel that I had whatever it took to get up and mix with others because of my self-esteem problem. Finally I got up the courage to order him a drink. When he got it, he gave me the most dazzling smile. We spent the rest of the evening talking until I realized that it was almost morning. I figured that he was simply being nice to me because I had bought him a drink, but the very next day he called and told me that he couldn't stop thinking about me and that he wanted to meet my kids, too.

About 3 months later, my divorce was final and Clint sat my boys down and asked them if it was all right with them if he asked me to marry him because he couldn't imagine life without the three of us any more. I was so touched that he went to my boys and asked for their approval because they were the "men of the house" at the ripe old ages of 2 and 4. They said yes and we have all been together ever since. Clint gave my boys and me a second chance at a wonderful life. Not a day goes by that he doesn't tell us that we are the best thing that ever happened to him and that he loves us.

The writer's first marriage was unsuccessful because ______.

A.her husband often woke her up at midnight

B.her husband kept criticizing her

C.she was unattractive

D.she had a self-esteem problem
