The Hurricane
"The Hurricane," with a running time of about two and one half hours is a powerful story about prejudice, racism and one man's will to survive.
Lesra, played by Vicellous Reon Shannon, a troubled black teenager, has been taken care of by three white Canadians in Toronto. They are sincere about helping him live a good life and encourage him to read and write. Lesra finds a book about a boxer, is fascinated by the boxer's story and writes him a letter. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, Denzell Washington, writes back to Lesra from his prison cell and they begin a correspondence that eventually leads to Carter's exoneration for the crime that he didn't commit.
The movie, based on a true story, takes place in Patterson, New Jersey, exposing the depths of racism in all of our United States, not just the South. I think movies like this will help us, albeit ever so slowly, to move our society away from fear, irrationality and prejudice and towards building communities that are filled with compassion, empathy and justice for all!
The beginning of this picture is a little confusing although there is some narrative, which always helps. The first few scenes are abrupt and I need to acquaint myself with the quick changes. There are a number of flashbacks that take place as Lesra begins to read the book. There are quite a few dates and places that appear as sub-titles at the beginning of scenes. At the end of the movie there is a written epilogue that is crucial for you to know.
The first half of this film has many challenges including a scene when Hurricane is left in "the hole." What you hear is all the voices in his mind; his internal dialogue. The second half of the story is much easier to follow. By this time you are familiar with the characters and things start falling into a reasonable sequence. The movie ends with a long court scene that is easy to follow and totally inspiring. The theater broke out into spontaneous applause at the end.

In addition to looking rather like a vegetable, the sloth is a strict vegetarian. Running out of its favorite leaf is about the only thing that will make a sloth move. Then its appetite may even force the animal into swimming a stream to reach a juicy succulent(多汁的值物). It will also force it into fighting to keep the tree all to itself. The sloth is lazy and prefers to be alone, but it will tolerate its own relatives!

Bergman knows Wyegand has a major news story to reveal about the corruption in the tobacco business. Wyegand is scared for his safety and the safety of his family, but feels compelled to talk to Bergman and get the whole truth out on 60 Minutes. Bergman, a man of high integrity, insures complete confidentiality to Wyegand. Wyegand slowly and very cautiously opens up to Bergman, only to find his anonymity compromised and his life rapidly falling apart.
The movie begins with a heavily guarded truck driving a blindfolded reporter to a secret hideout for an exclusive interview with the leader of a well known terrorist group. You'll never figure this scene out unless you get lots of descriptions. I think they began the movie with this scene to show how far the 60 Minutes crew would go to get an important story.
Although there are lots of other characters in this film, the movie focuses around Bergman and Wyegand and their voices are very distinct and easy to pick up. This was good. There was lots of dialogue, which was also good, although lots of the dialogue was rapid fire so you'll need to stay sharply focused. As most thrillers, even though this one is based on true facts, many of the scenes are fast paced. Lots of scenes quickly jump from one thing to another. From the visually impaired point of view, on a couple of occasions my sighted assistant had difficulty understanding what was happening and obviously had a hard time describing those scenes to me. You could feel the tension growing as the story unfolded which was good, but there were numerous scenes with just music that continued to build the tension for those who could see. For me however, those scenes were only an interruption of the tension and took away from my enjoyment of the picture.
There were definitely things I missed in this film but going out to this movie was still well worth it. I'll advise you to check it out yourself. It's an interesting one.

Standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon(大峡谷), gazing across this giant would in the Earth's surface, a visitor might assume that the canyon had been caused by some ancient convulsing (震动). In fact, the events that produced the canyon, far from being sudden and catastrophic, simply add up to the slow and orderly process of erosion.
Many millions of years ago, the Colorado Plateau in the Grand Canyon area contained 1000 more feet of rock than it does today and was relatively level. The additional material consisted of some 14 layered formations of rock. In the Grand Canyon region these layers were largely worn away over the course of millions of years.
Approximately 65 million years ago the plateau's flat surface in the Grand Canyon area bulged upward from internal pressure, geologists refer to this bulging actions upwading(弯曲上升); it was followed by a general elevation of the whole Colorado Plateau, a process that is still going on. As the plateau gradually rose, shallow rivers that winded across it began to run more swiftly and cut more definite courses. One of these rivers, located east of the up- ward, was the ancestor of the Colorado. Another river system, called the Hualapai, flowing west of the upward, extended itself eastward by cutting back into the upward, it eventually connected with the ancient Colorado and captured its waters. The new river then began to carve out the 277-mile-long trench that eventually became the Grand Canyon. Geologists estimate that this initial cutting action began no earlier than 10 million years ago.
Since then, the Canyon forming has been cumulative. To the corrosive force of the river itself have been added other factors. Heat and cold, rain and snow, along with the varying resistance of the rocks, increase the opportunities for erosions, the Canyon walls crumble, the river acquires a cutting tool. Tons of debris, rainfall running off the high plateau creates feeder streams that carve side canyons. Pushing slowly backward into the. plateau, the side canyons expose new rocks, and the pattern of erosion continues.
