听力原文: A unique laboratory at the University of Chicago is busy only at night. It is a

dream laboratory where researchers are at work studying dreamers. Their findings have revealed that everyone dreams from three to seven times a night, although in ordinary life a person may remember none or only one of his dreams. While the subjects, usually students, are asleep, special machines record their brain waves and eye movements as well as the body movements that signal the end of a dream. Surprisingly, all subjects sleep soundly. Observers report that once the dream has started, one's body relaxes and his eyes become more active, as if the curtain had gone up on a show. As soon as the machine indicates that the dream is over, a buzzer wakens the sleeper. He sits up, records his dream, and goes back to sleep, perhaps to dream some more. Researchers have found that if the dreamer is wakened immediately after his dream, he can keep the dream. If he is allowed to sleep even five more minutes, his memory of the dream will have faded.

What are the researchers at the University of Chicago studying?

A.Different kinds of dreams.

B.The content of dreams.

C.Dreamers while they dream.

听力原文: Cornton Vale is a new prison specially designed for women in Scotland. The 226 prisoners there live in small units of seven rooms. There is a kitchen where they cook their own meals and a lounge with fitted carped and armchairs.

The "wake-up, wake-up" called by loudspeaker at 7 every morning is followed by a music program, which creates the atmosphere of a holiday camp. During the day, most of the prisoners are employed in three workshops, making toys or clothing. Their earning—up to 90 pence a week—can be spent in the prison shop.

The gymnasium, which also acts as a cinema and concert hall, has facilities for table tennis, basketball and dancing.

Prisoners, particularly those with long sentences, are encouraged to be independent and take responsibility for themselves and others. This is in many ways much more demanding than simply serving time. Just as the deputy governor of this prison once said, "We try to preserve the prisoners's self-respect as much as possible, by imagining ourselves in their position" ourselves in their position.' His words explain why this new prison is mn in a unique way.

(33)

A.A small town in Britain.

B.A new type of jail.

C.A labor camp.

D.A big gymnasium in Scotland.

听力原文: The latest strike in southern Vietnam began Friday morning, when hundreds of workers blocked the entrance of the Pou Chen Corporation near Ho Chi Minh City. The Taiwanese-owned company manufactures garments for Nike, Adidas, and other American corporations, and employs 22,000 workers. It was not clear just how many had joined the strike. Nguyen Minh Quang, the government-sponsored labor union representative of Pou Chen Corporation, says the strikers throw fermented shrimp paste on company security guards. The paste is foul smelling and hard to wash out. This strike, as with most others recently, did not have official backing from Vietnam's only government approved labor union. The demands at Pou Chen Corporation included higher salaries, but the workers there also demanded the removal of one of the Taiwanese managers.

How many workers are employed by Pou Chen Corporation?

A.2,200

B.22,000

C.220,000

D.2,200,000

听力原文: The labor problems were the latest bad news for an industry that has been hit in recent times by high production costs and slumping demand. Tea industry officials say wages are lower in other tea-producing nations. Labor costs account for more than half the total cost of tea production. The India Tea Association's deputy secretary, Pranjal Neog, says Indian tea, one predominant in world markets, has been steadily losing out as a result. The tea industry says it is also facing problems in the domestic market, which consumes 70% of the beverage produced in the country. In recent years, demand has stagnated or even declined in some areas due to the growing popularity of such beverages as soft drinks--particularly among younger people. Indian tea has traditionally dominated world markets since a few cases were exported to Britain in the mid-19th century. But now, says tea growers, they only see tough times ahead.

The tea industry declined in India due to the following reasons EXCEPT

A.falling demand.

B.increasing popularity of soft drinks.

C.high production costs.

D.lower wages paid to domestic tea growers.

听力原文: The agricultural revolution in the 19th century involved two things: the invention of labor-saving machinery and the development of scientific agriculture. Labor-saving machinery naturally appeared first where labor was scarce. "In Europe." said Thomas Jefferson, "the object is to make the most of their land, labor being rich enough; here it is to make the most of our labor, land being rich enough." It was in the United States, therefore, that the great advances in nineteenth-century agricultural machinery first came.

At the opening of the century, with the exception of crude equipment, farmers could have carried practically all of the existing agricultural implements on their backs; by 1860, most of the machinery in use today had been designed in an early form. The most important of the inventions was the iron plow. As early as 1790 Charles Newbold of New Jersey had been working on the idea of a cast-iron plow andspent his entire fortune in introducing his invention. The farmers, however, were not interested in it, believing that the iron poisoned the soil and made the weeds row. Nevertheless, many people devoted their attention to the plow, until in 1869 James Oliver of South Bend, Indiana turned out the first steel plow.

(33)

A.The invention of machine that can save labor and the progress of scientific agriculture.

B.The invention of crude equipments and agricultural implements.

C.The advance of agriculture machinery and the iron plow.

D.The idea of a cast-iron plow and steel plow.
