听力原文: Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops. And even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. Many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it. But one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea lasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few Britons drink tea without milk.

(30)

听力原文: Tea, that most quintessential of English drinks, is a relative latecomer to Brit
ish shores. Although the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China, it was not until the mid-17th century that the beverage first appeared in England. The use of tea spread slowly from its Asian homeland, reaching Europe by way of Venice around 1560, although Portuguese trading ships may have made contact with the Chinese as early as 1515. It was the Portuguese and Dutch traders who first imported tea to Europe, with regular shipments by 1610. England was a latecomer to the tea trade, as the East India Company did not capitalize on tea's popularity until the mid-18th century. Charles Ⅱ did his bit to counter the growth of tea, with several acts forbidding its sale in private houses. A 1676 act taxed tea and required coffee house operators to apply for a license. This was just the start of government attempts to control, or at least, to profit from the popularity of tea in Britain. By the mid-18th century the duty on tea had reached an absurd 119%. This heavy taxation had the effect of creating a whole new industry--tea smuggling.

What does this passage talk about?

A.The top five spots in Britain.

B.The Spa towns in Britain.

C.The city of Bath.

D.The Roman museum in Britain.

听力原文: The story of silk is a fascinating one. About 4,000 years ago the Chinese discovered the secret of the cocoon. No one knows exactly how or when this was made. One story says that a young princess was drinking tea in her garden and watching the silkworm spin cocoon. By chance one dropped into her tea, and the hot liquid softened it. When the girl tried to take the cocoon out of her tea. She pulled out a long silk thread.

The Chinese learned to weave the silk thread into cloth. For 2,000 years they were the only people who knew how to make silk. The Chinese merchants sold silk cloth throughout Asia and Europe and became rich. Silk was so expensive that it was called "the cloth of the Kings". Everyone wanted to learn how to make silk, but the Chinese kept the secret carefully guarded. Finally the secret was stolen. In the sixth century, two monks learned about the silk worms and their cocoons. They spent several years in China and finally found a way to take some worm eggs out of the country. The monks also carried bamboo canes. One day they hid some eggs in the hollow canes, and walked out of China with them. It is said that the development of the silk industry in other countries came from those few eggs which the monks had carried out of China.

(33)

A.The silk covering made by an insect.

B.The silk covering made by a silkworm.

C.The soft protective covering made by an animal.

D.The hard protective covering made by an animal.

听力原文: A survey carried out in eight countries found that people around the world are annoyed with guilt about the small pleasures in life. This doesn't stop people from indulging in alcohol, cigarettes and high-fat foods, but it does stop them from enjoying them. The survey questioned 4000 people about their attitudes towards a list of indulgences including smoking, eating chocolate and cakes, drinking alcohol and failing to exercise.

It found that Australians are the world's most guilt-dominated people, while the Dutch were the greatest pleasure-takers and also least regretful about their indulgences. Germans came second in the guilt league and were least likely to take enjoyment from physical pleasures.

Scientists said moderate indulgence reduces stress, a benefit that can be completely outweighed by feelings of guilt. A favorite treat, such as a cup of tea or coffee, a glass of wine or beer, a cigarette or a bar of chocolate reduces stress and helps people relax. But when people get caught in the guilt trap, they either try to sacrifice their enjoyment or live with the guilt. This can undermine the positive benefits of enjoyment which studies show can protect against stress and strengthen the immune system.

At its worst, stress can lead to depression and illness such as heart disease and cancer.

(33)

A.People's indulgences in small pleasures.

B.People's guilty feelings about indulgences.

C.The enjoyment from physical pleasures.

D.The world's greatest pleasure takers.
