听力原文: The estimated one-fifth of children in London's schools who cannot read simple sentences by the age of eight should be given special help. This is the main conclusion of an independent report on London's 700 primary schools. The report, which is the result of a year's work, tells London's primary schools that they must demand more of their children.

Most parents were happy with the schools, but some said that their children's pace of learning might be too slow. The report confirmed this by stating that much of the new work must have been taught at the same level of difficulty as the old.

The report emphasized that children should not be tortured but more should have been expected of them in schools. This would mean that some children might have achieved much more than the limited demands made on them by comprehension exercises or copying out from textbooks.

Mrs. Morrel, who commissioned the report, said that all London's schools must put into effect a framework of reform. Every child ought to be able to read by the age of eight.

Other reforms mentioned in the report were that parents should be better represented on school governing committees and that each school ought to draw up a development plan, listing what improvements it can make. Parents should also be represented on the education committee.

(27)

A.They should not be too strict with the children.

B.They should limit their demands on some children.

C.They should demand more of their children.

D.They should demand more of the bright children.

听力原文:W: (22) I don't know if we'll be able to spare a whole day at the Ocean Park. We've only got four days in Hong Kong, remember?

M: Oh, right, well, in that case, I'd advise you to get there early. (22)1t opens at 10 o'clock in the morning on week ends. Look, I think I've got a plan of the place somewhere. Let me see.., yes, here we are. You can have this.

W: Thanks.

M: OK, I'll show you. Let's start with the lower level. See? Here? You arrive by taxi or bus or whatever here, on the right, can you see? That's the bus terminal. And you go in through the main entrance. (23)Yon could go to the Water world first but I think you'd better skip that as you're short of time.

W: I can see the cable cars.

M: OK, walk past the cable car terminal, at the bottom of the plan, (24)and bear right past the Waterfall Gardens. Actually? have a look in, there are ducks and other birds in the pool there-it's very pretty. Then you'll see some steps u p on the left. Follow that path and you'll come to the Centenary Garden which is a good place to stop and take pictures if you've got your camera.

W: What's the next place?

M: Then carry on until you're almost at the Children Zoo. It takes quite a long time to walk around. But I do recommend the "touch and feed" section opposite, as I said. (25)The fun fair is very interesting? but it’s great fun for older children.

(23)

A.The Waterfall Garden.

B.The theatre.

C.The Water World.

D.The Ocean Park.

听力原文: In a recent study, shoppers were asked to taste a chocolate-chip cookie. (26) When given a cookie from a full jar, they said it tasted all right; but when they were offered one from a nearly empty jar, they said it tasted better. This shows an interesting aspect of human nature. The scarcer something is, the more highly people tend to value it.

D. H. Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover brought the author the most fame not when it was first published in 1928, (27) but when it was banned -- and when many thousands of black-market copies of the book were sold before it was finally made legal in the 1960s.

According to social psychologists like Robert Cialdini, our instinctive interest in acquiring things that are rare reflects our evolutionary history. In the past, when food or raw materials were scarce, real value increased, because possession gave the owner an advantage for survival.

(28) Salespeople love pressing the "scarce, therefore valuable" button, with warnings like "Buy now while stocks last!" and "Quick! Limited-Time Offer!" Clever advertisers know that it's much more effective to focus on the fear of loss than on the benefit of gain. Experts at the University of California found that homeowners are 300 percent more likely to buy an energy-saving plan if the message is "Stop losing 50 cents a day" instead of "Start saving 50 cents a day". Do you want to make a proposal to your management for a $100,000 savings plan? You're more likely to. get it through if you present your message in terms of a $100,000 loss, should your plan not be accepted.

(27)

A.It tasted as good as the one from a full jar.

B.It tasted no better than the one from a full jar.

C.It tasted better than the one from a full jar.

D.It tasted worse than the one from a full jar.

听力原文: A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end the worries of man, parents fearful for their children's safety on the roads.

Until now the local government has only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will be attending their nearest school.

The new plan is to be tried out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. Now the government has agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school's headmaster.

Between 50 and 60 parents have said they would like their children to take part. Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term.

They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost, because there is already an agreement with the bus com puny to take children who live further away to Impington. The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in the past had asked if transport could be provided for their children, to see if they would tike to take part in the new plan.

(27)

A.To prevent the students' road accidents.

B.To relieve the traffic pressure.

C.To save time for the parents and students.

D.To help the parents save money.
