听力原文:M: And now here is our guest Jane Thomas to tell us about Montreal's famous yearly island bicycle tour which is coming up in June. Good morning, Jane. What is the bike tour all about'?

W: Well. Peter, it's an event that's open to anybody who'd like to ride a bicycle through the streets of Montreal. The tour covers a standard distance of 65 kilometers. But the route is quite different every year. So even people who've already done it might enjoy doing it again.

M: How long does it take to go the whole distance?

W: It varies. Cyclists are free to go as fast or as slow and do as much or as little of the course as they like.

M: Well, what's the typical pace for a participant?

W: Between 12 and 30 km per hour. Some cyclists stop along the way and don't cross the finish line until early evening. But the whole point is that there is no rush. It's not a race.

M: I understand last year's tour had 45 thou 'sand cyclists and it was the largest mass cycling event in the world. How many do you expect this year?

W: The same as last year. And since we regularly have so many participants, can 1 take this opportunity to remind our listeners to sign up early? We filled up quickly last year and we had to refuse lots of applications.

M: Before we close, any other tips for prospective cyclists?

W: Yes. Take water with you. It is available at the relay stations but it helps to have an additional supply. And pack a good lunch with plenty of fruit for energy. Candy and chocolate don't do the trick.

听力原文: After retiring from 30 years of teaching, Suzanne could easily have decided to sit back and relax and enjoy a peaceful retirement. But that kind of life is not for Suzanne. "I just wanted to do something different. If you are going to participate in life, do it. Don't just sit down and look out of the window," she says. At 68, she decided to become one of the pioneer participants in a program at the University of California. The program offers campus housing and classes to people over sixty. She enrolled in a class called Human Relationships in a Diverse Society. "I taught minority students in my English and drama classes in high school for g0 years. But in this course, I found out a lot about other cultures and I didn't know then. One of the most important lessons that I'm learning is to perceive, not to judge." Older adults can add to the educational resources of the university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some wrong beliefs about aging. Young students may have fears of growing older but that kind of fear can be reduced as they see that older people can be active, healthy, and continue to contribute to society. The younger students can begin to see aging as a natural part of living.

(23)

A.She sat back and relaxed.

B.She decided to retire.

C.She entered university.

听力原文: Did you know that vegetables can be tricked into growing in climates they are not accustomed to? Cool climate vegetables like asparagus are now able to be grown in places as hot as Hawaii. In Hawaii marine engineers have been able to actually convince such vegetables that they're in cooler climates. That way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is very simply cold water. How do they use it? They place pipes in the soil and the cold water flows in through and then cools the air. This stimulates plant growth and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they condense moisture and thus irrigate the garden. What's especially appealing about this process is that nothing damaging to the environment is being used. Another innovative use for cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that, for example, the entire western coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using seawater. We'll be back to discuss that possibility after this commercial message.

(26)

A.Irrigating desert areas.

B.Use for cold seawater.

C.Techniques for preserving the environment.

D.The importance of conserving energy.
