When we speak of Nature in this manner, we mean the integrity of expression made manifold by natural objects. The charming landscape that I saw this morning is indubitable made up of some twenty or thirty farms. This field is the property of Miller, that one the property of Locke, and that one beyond the wood the property of Manning. But none of them owns the landscape. There is property in the horizon which no man has, but it belongs only to him whose eyes can integrate all the parts. This is the best part of these men' s farms, yet to this their warranty gives no title. The power to produce this delight does not reside in Nature, but in humans, or in the harmony of both, for Nature is not always decked out in holiday attire. The same scene which yesterday breathed perfume and glittered is overspread with melancholy today. Nature always wears the color of the spirit.

Nature (excerpt) by Ralph Waldo Emerson To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst 1 read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars. The rays that come from those heavenly worlds, will separate between him and what he touches. One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime. Seen in the streets of cities, how great they are! If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile. The stars awaken a certain reverence, because though always present, they are inaccessible; but all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence. Nature never wears a mean appearance. Neither does the wisest man extort her secret, and lose his curiosity by finding out all her perfection. Nature never became a toy to a wise spirit. The flowers, the animals, the mountains, reflected the wisdom of his best hour, as much as they had delighted the simplicity of his childhood. When we speak of nature in this manner, we have a distinct but most poetical sense in the mind. We mean the integrity of impression made by manifold natural objects. It is this which distinguishes the stick of timber of the wood-cutter, from the tree of the poet.
The originators of the Welfare State idea were concerned to alleviate or remove what they saw as the evils of their time. Their efforts resulted in a great improvement in the standard of living and life expectancy in Britain. This progress in itself has simulated the increasing cost of maintaining the Welfare State. Over 45 percent of the health authority expenditure on hospitals and community services is spent on care of the elderly. Yet there are indications that beverage calculated that less would need to be spent on people once they retired. Advances in medical knowledge have involved the use of expensive drugs and hospital procedures. Drug and alcohol abuse make increasing demands on the medical services.
The present government is planning a new approach to the social security system, which accounts for nearly one-third of public expenditure. Changes in the movement's pension scheme to encourage private schemes will start from April this year. Different ways of assessing need are planned. To enable closer monitoring and control, the DHSS has begun the biggest computerization program in Europe. Suggestions have been made by opposition politicians that the present movement intends to say "farewell" to the Welfare State. Although all the major parties in Britain say they are committed' to a caring society. There's a considerable difference in the means each would wish to use to achieve it. As the old saying goes, "Only time will tell".

In certain cases, a woman could draw upon the folk wisdom and remedies she had learned back home; Western mosquitoes, for example, proved to be as repelled by a paste of vinegar and salt as were their Eastern cousins. More often, however, a woman was guided only by her own ingenuity in concocting (调制的) tonics (补药), powders, poisons, and polishes from whatever she had at land: salt made a passable toothpaste, gunpowder was applied to wants, and turpentine to open cuts, goose grease, skunk oil, and the ever present lard were basic liniments; medicinal teas and tonics were brewed from sunflower seeds and roots.
