In the late 1970s Britain seemed to have struck it rich.Having developed its North Sea oil-producing fields in earlier years,Britain suddenly found its real income higher as a result of a dramatic increase in world oil prices in 1979-1980. In the early 1980s,however,oil prices receded as the world economy slid into a deep recession and world oil demand faltered.

On the following page,we show index numbers for the average real exchange rate of the pound against several foreign currencies.(Such average index numbers are called real effective exchange rates.)A rise in one of these numbers indicates a real appreciation of the pound, that is,an increase in Britain's price level relative to the average price level abroad measured in pounds.A fall is a real depreciation.

Use the clues we have given about the British economy to explain the rise and fall of the pound's real effective exchange rate between 1978 and 1984. Pay particular attention to the role of nontradables.

Britain belongs to the EU, but it has not yet adopted the euro, and fierce debate rages over the question.

a.Find macro data on the British economy's performance since 1998 (inflation, unemployment, real GDP growth) and compare these with euro zone data.

b.What were nominal interest rates in Britain and the euro zone after 1998? How would Britain have done if the ECB had been setting Britain's nominal interest rate at the euro zone level and the pound sterling's euro exchange rate had been fixed?

Finance ministers from the industrial countries are turning up the political pre
ssure on OPEC, calling on the cartel to raise production to bring prices down, when it holds a formal meeting in just under two weeks. At that meeting in Beirut it will decide whether to go along with Saudi Arabia' s intention of raising output. Much tums on the decision. Oil prices are not as high in real terms now as they were after the Yom Kippur war thirty years ago, or later wars in the Middle East, when high oil prices caused global recessions. All the same, finance ministers in the oil coarsening countries say the recent rise in oil prices has caused difficulty. Firstly, high fuel prices are invuiably politically painful. Britain has suffered protests by motorists in the past. Americans are complaining about gas at the pumps above two dollars a gallon. Higher oil prices also act like a tax on economies, slowing growth and perhaps rekindling inflation.

Who are in favor of raising off price?

A.Finance ministers from the industrial countries

B.Some Middle East countries

C.Motorists in Britain

D.Americans

Section D

One of the most interesting developments in the toy market has been the revival of interest in that most traditional of toys : train sets. Models of all sorts, but especially railways, were unfashionable in the 1980s and 1990s, but they have become big business in the last few years. In Britain there has always been a strong interest in railways, as can be seen from the number of people who go "train spotting"--collecting information about locomotives and train movements. This also explains why Britain is the largest model railway market in Europe.

Modern train sets are introducing children, who may never have traveled on a real train, to the joys of railway modeling. For parents, model railways are a healthier indoor alternative to computers and video games. Model trains are more lasting than other toys, and their quality is superb. This has added to their popularity with both parents and children. Interestingly, the majority of purchasers of model railways today are adults, not children. By that I do not mean that parents buy model railways for their children, although obviously this happens a great deal. I mean adults who are willing to spend a lot of money on miniature locomotives and relive part of their childhood. Purchasers of model trains are often wealthy middle-aged men, such as bankers and business executives.
