As one works with color in a practical, or experimental way, one is impressed by two appar
ently unrelated facts. Color as seen is a mobile, changeable thing (1)_____ to a large extent on the relationship of the color (2)_____ other colors (3)_____ simultaneously. It is not (4)_____ in its relation to the direct stimulus which (5)_____ it. On the other hand, the properties of surfaces that give (6)_____ to color do not seem to change greatly under a wide variety of illumination color, usually (but not always) looking much the same in artificial light as in daylight. Both of these effects seem to be (7)_____ in large part to the mechanism of color (8)_____.

When the eye is (9)_____ to a colored area, there is an immediate readjustment of the (10)_____ of the eye to color in and around the area (11)_____. This readjustment does not promptly affect the color seen but usually does affect the next area to which the (12)_____ is shifted. The longer the time of viewing, the higher the (13)_____, and the larger the area, the greater the effect will be (14)_____ its persistence in the (15)_____ viewing situation. As indicated by the work of Wright and Schouten, it appears that, at (16)_____ for a first approximation, full adaptation takes place over (17)_____ time if the adapting source is moderately bright and the eye has been in (18)_____ darkness just previously. Also, (19)_____ of the persistence of the effect if the eye is shifted around from one object to another, all of which are at similar brightness or have similar colors, the adaptation will tend to become (20)_____ over the whole eye.

Because of its potential for cutting costs, the distribution step in the marketing process
is receiving more attention. Distribution involves warehousing, transporting and keeping inventory of manufactured products. Take an everyday product like fabric softener. After it comes off the assembly line, it's packed in cartons and tracked to warehouses around the country. When orders come in from retailers, the fabric softener is delivered to supermarket shelves. This is distribution.

Probably the most crucial area for controlling costs is inventory. Companies don't want to overproduce and have unsold stock of their product piled up in warehouses. Wholesale companies and large retail chains employ several techniques for inventory control. This is where the computer revolution really had an impact. Computerized information systems give precise and up-to-date accounts of inventory on hand. And the field of distribution offers good entry- level jobs for persons with training in computer programming or data processing.

Overseeing the whole area of distribution is the distribution manager. This job is becoming increasingly important and can lead to an executive position.

According to the passage, why is the distribution step in marketing getting more attention?

A.It is where companies research and develop new products.

B.It is where companies can cut costs.

C.It is where employees can update their computer skills.

D.It provides jobs for college graduates.

As one works with color in a practical or experimental way, one is impressed by two appare
ntly unrelated facts. Color as seen is a mobile changeable thing depending to a large extent on the relationship of the color to other colores seen simultaneously. It is not fixed in its relation to the direct stimulus which creates it. On the other hand, the properties of surfaces that give rise to color do not seem to change greatly under a wide variety of illumination colors, usually (but not always) looking much the same in artificial light as in daylight. Both of these effects seem to the due in large part to the mechanism of color adaptation mentioned earlier.

When the eye is fixed on a colored area, there is an immediate readjustment of the sensitivity of the eye to color in and around the area viewed. This readjustment does not immediately affect the color seen but usually does affect the next area to which the gaze is shifted. The longer the time of viewing, the higher the intensity, and the larger the area, the greater the effect will be in terms of its persistence in the succeeding viewing situation. As indicated by the work of Wright and Schouten, it appears that, at least for a first approximation, full adaptation takes place over a very brief time if the adapting source is moderately bright and the eye has been in relative darkness just previously. As the stimulus is allowed to act, however, the effect, becomes more persistent in the sense that it takes the eye longer to regain its sensitivity to lower intensities. The net result is that, if the eye is so exposed and then the gaze is transferred to an area of lower intensity, the loss of sensitivity produced by the first area will still be present and appear as an "afterimage" super imposed on the second. The effect not only is present over the actual area causing the "local adaptation" but also spreads with decreasing strength to adjoining areas of the eye to produce "lateral adaptation". Also, because of the persistence of the effect if the eye is shifted around from one object to another, all of which are at similar brightnesses or have similar colors, the adaptation will tend to become uniform. over the whole eye.

This selection is concerned primarily with ______.

A.the eye's adaptation to color

B.the properties of colored surfaces

C.the effect of changes in color intensity

D.experiments on colored objects

The Norwegian government is doing its best to keep the oil industry under control. A new l
aw limits exploration to an area south of the southern end of the long coastline, production limits have been laid down, and oil companies have not been allowed to employ more than a limited number of foreign workers. But the oil industry has a way of getting over such problems, and few people

believe that the government will be able to hold things back for long.

Ever since the war, the government has been carrying out a program of development in the area north of the Arctic Circle. During the past few years this program has had a great deal of success. Tromso has been built up into a local capital with a university, a large hospital and a healthy industry . But the oil industry has already started to draw people south, and within a few years the whole northern policy could be in ruins.

The effects of the oil industry would not be limited to the north, however. With nearly 100 per cent employment, everyone can see a situation developing in which the service industries and the tourist industry will lose most of their workers to the oil industry. Some smaller industries might even disappear altogether when it becomes cheaper to buy goods from abroad.

The Norwegian government would prefer the oil industry to ______

A.provide more jobs for foreign workers

B.slow down the rate of its development

C.sell the oil it is producing abroad

D.develop more quickly than at present
