听力原文: Reading to oneself is a modem activity which was almost unknown to the scholars of the classical and medieval worlds, while during the fifteenth century the term "reading" undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become commonplace. One should be careful, however, in assuming that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud is a distraction to others. (33)Examination of factors related to the historical development of silent reading reveals that it became the usual mode of reading for most adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character. (32)The 19th century saw a steady gradual increase in literacy, and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, so the number of potential listeners decreased, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the flourishing of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, railway carriages and offices; There reading aloud would cause distraction to other readers. (34)Towards the end of the century there was still considerable argument over whether books should be used for information, and over whether the reading material such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument remains with as still in education. However, whatever its virtues are, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the mass media on the one hand and by books and magazines for a specialized readership on the other. The social, cultural, and technological changes in the century had greatly altered what the term "reading" implied.

听力原文: Is your family interested in buying a dog? A dog can be a happy addition to your family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, the consequences can cause you a lot of trouble.

Families are the ones who want the dog, the parents are the ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you don't know much about dogs, it's a good idea to go to the library or the ASPCA for books about various kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a puppy. In reading about the different breeds, you should know that a dog described as very alert may be too jumpy and bouncy. When a book describes a dog as an ideal bunting dog, it probably means that the dog won't be happy living in a small apartment. Dog breeds vary in popularity as the years go by. One of the most popular dogs these days is the German shepherd. This is because it provides protection as well as companionship. The family should be warned that these dogs grow up to be very big, and may be too powerful for children to handle. If space is limited, a toy dog may be a good choice. These dogs are very small and easy to train. They don't need to be walked daily, since they can exercise in the space available in the home.

听力原文: In a time of low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education. Only two percent of the Japanese respondents listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half of the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.

Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools.

Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities.

(30)

A.Because Japanese preschools cost less than those in America.

B.Because Japanese children have high academic achievement.

C.Because Japanese preschools pay much attention to the overall development of children.

D.Because there are only a few preschools in America.

听力原文:W: What are you reading, Bill?

M: It's this week's New Scientist, why?

W: I was just wondering. It looks interesting. It is for real scientists or can ordinary people like me understand it?

M: Oh, it is for anyone really. It usually has articles and stories about character affairs and about science as well as papers about a new development and research. I am reading about a new telephone that allows you to see the person you are speaking to as well as hear him.

W: Oh, I've heard about it. Is it on the market yet? Can I buy one?

M: No, not this one. But the company has made other models to try out on business. This one is special because it has color and the image is moving.

W: That's interesting.

M: You see the video photos that what they called were made in Japan. But they can only show a still, black and white image. So this video phone is much better than that. Mind you and I'm not sure I want one, would you?

W: Well, no. I don't think I would. I bet it costs a lot of money. Does it say how much it costs?

M: Yes, the early black and white ones cost several hundred pounds, but the one the story is about costs several thousand pounds.

W: Er. Why does anybody want one, do you think?

M: Business organizations that need to frequently contact overseas organizations would want it. It is like a face-to-face conversation. So maybe a lot of overseas travel can be avoided.

W: Yes, I suppose so.

听力原文:M: Hey, Jenny!

F: Oh, Johnny! You scared me.

M: You seemed today absorbed in this book. What is the name of it ?

F: The Interpretation of Dreams.

M: You' re reading Freud. Can you understand the book? Or do you agree with the opinions in the book?

F: Well, as a matter of fact, it is rather difficult for me. It is part dream analysis, part autobiography, part theory of the mind, and part history of contemporary Vienna. The principle that underlay this book was that mental experiences and entities, like physical ones, are part of nature.

M: Sounds complicated.

F: That means that Freud could admit no mere accidents in mental procedures.

M: That is even more confusing.

F: Well, he thought that even nonsense, the most casual slip of the tongue, the most fantastic dream, must have a meaning.

M: Then what?

F: Then he applied this principle to treat his patients, which is called psychoanalytic therapy. When treating his patients, he would be a largely silent listener and encouraged the patients to say whatever comes to mind, no matter how foolish, repetitive or outrageous. He occasionally Intervened to what the patient is struggling to say.

M: I think this therapy is quite popular in modern practice.

P: Yea, although the effect of this analysis still remains a question. Do you know about his fundamental idea?

M: Just some vague ideas. Like that all humans are born with strong sexual desires and aggressiveness that fight against your intentions to suppress them; that erotic desire starts as early as in infancy.

F: You are right. And in many people' s eyes, this is nothing less than obscene. That is why three are never neutrals in the Freud wars. A psychoanalyst may regard Freud as a cultural hero, while another critic my devote his days to exposing Freud as a charlatan.

What is the name of the book Jenny is reading?

A.The Interpretation of Dreams.

B.The Translation of Dreams.

C.The Analysis of Dreams.

D.The Psychoanalysis.
