"...We are not about to enter the Information Age, but instead are rather well into it." P
resent predictions are that by 1990, about thirty million jobs in the United States, or about thirty percent of the job market, will be computer-related. In 1980, only twenty-one percent of all American high schools owned one or two computers for student use. In the fall of 1985, a new study showed that half of United States secondary schools have fifteen or more computers for student use. And now educational experts, administrators, and even the general public are demanding that all students become" computer literate". By the year 2000 knowledge of computers will be necessary in over eighty percent of all occupations. Soon those people not educated in computer use will be compared to those who are print illiterate today.

What is "computer literacy"? The term itself seems to imply some degree of" knowing" about computers, but knowing what? The present opinion seems to be that this should include a general knowledge of what computers are, plus a little of their history and something of how they operate.

Therefore, it is important that educators everywhere take a careful look not only at what is being done, but also at what should be done in the field of computer education. Today most adults are able to use a motor car without the slightest knowledge of how the internalcombustion engine (内燃机) works. We effectively use all types of electrical equipment without being able to tell their histories or to explain how they work.

Business people for years have made good use of typewriters and adding machines, yet few have ever known how to repair them. Why, then, attempt to teach computers by teaching how or why they work?

Rather, we first must fix our mind on teaching the effective use of the computer as the tool is.

"Knowing how to use a computer is what's going to be important. We don't talk about 'auto- mobile literacy'. We just get in our cars and drive them."

The underlined part "print illiterate" in the text refers to ______.

A.one who has never learnt printing

B.one who has never learnt to read

C.one who is not computer literate

D.one who is not able to use a typewriter

听力原文: Make no mistake, learning any language to proficiency takes thousands of hours,
but learning enough to be able to communicate reasonably well is not so difficult. If you can read this in English but have trouble communicating face to face, then you're at the right place. We provide plenty of hints about how to improve your communication skills in the English language. You'll also find some detailed suggestions on how to read and understand more. Because face-to-face communication is quite different from reading and writing, there are two main ways to learn a language. What you should read first depend on your goals:

1) For Reading

If the main reason you want to learn is for reading information on the Internet or in books, magazines, letters or newspapers, then you can focus on studying the written language.

2) For Communication

If you're hoping to travel, use English for work or to communicate with your friends, then you can concentrate your efforts on the spoken language.

3) For Help With Writing

If you need to write in English then you'll need to combine the studies of both spoken and written language. Skill at communicating is almost a prerequisite for someone who wants to write because it helps a lot with syntax and grammar, giving the student a feel for the language. Gaining skill at reading is also necessary, because good writing is different from normal speech.

What should one do when one intends to learn how to communicate with others?

A.One can assess how appropriate the courses you're considering buying.

B.One can focus on studying the oral and written language.

C.One can concentrate one's efforts on the spoken language.

D.One can read information on the Internet or in books, magazines or newspapers.

M: Well, you heard right. We have great discounts for students.

W: I don't know much about computer, and (19)I want a desktop computer with large memory.

M: Well, (20)I highly recommend the Power Macintosh G3. It comes with 64 megabytes of total memory. It should be enough for any student needs you might have. We have a special deal on right now. I should tell you about it, as it only goes until next Tuesday. (20)If you want one, you can actually get 30 percent off the usual sale price.

W: Wow. That's really good. Hey, wait. Is this an Apple computer?

听力原文:W: Good afternoon, Mr. Green. I'm planning to go abroad for study. Do you think I
should get some health insurance?

M: I think so. One unexpected medical emergency can drain your financial resources, leaving you with no money to pay for school. As a result, you'll have no choice but to return to your own country.

W: How can I get health insurance?

M: You really have two basic choices for health insurance: obtain international insurance in your home coma try before you depart or student health insurance once you arrive.

W: Then how to get international insurance?

M: As for international insurance, you'll have to pay the medical costs in full on your own. If you have sufficient funds, then this won't be a problem.

W: Oh, that seems not suitable for me. What about the second option?

M: As for the second option, you'll probably just have to pay a certain percentage, and the company will pay their part.

W: That sounds good. Then what should we note when signing the insurance agreement?

M: Well, be sure to clearly understand the terms of the agreement you sign with the insurance company. There are often a number of limitations and restrictions with the policy, and understanding them up will reduce the number of misunderstandings that could arise.

W: Oh, I see.

M: It is wise of you to consider health insurance before going abroad to study. However, many students only think about insurance when it is too late as they sit in the hospital's emergency room. So get insurance to help you pay for your medical expenses; otherwise, you might not have money for tomorrow's school tuition.

W: Well, I think I've got all the information I need. Thank you so much, Mr. Green.

M: You're welcome.
