He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed, love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so he labors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, of defeat in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and worst of all without pity, or compassion. He writes not of the heart but of the glands.
Until he relearns these things he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure; that when the last ding-dong of doom has changed and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance. The poet's, the writer's duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet's voice need not merely be the record of man, it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

听力原文: What has happened to the youth of today? People of the older generations ask this question. Yet, for some time now a movement has been developing among our young people. It is called "Straight Edge" and its followers are attempting to overcome the poisons of life. The leader of this movement is lan Mckays, a former Washington singer. He was the person who set the goal of this movement: no smoking, no drinking, no drugs. Since its birth in 1981, the movement has spread to Europe and is growing worldwide.
Lutz Dinslage, 19, has been one of the movement's followers for a year now. "My friends first introduced me to the movement, and I became interested in it. I began to realize that I no longer wanted to create false feelings of happiness by smoking, drinking or taking drugs. I did not want to just mess around. For this reason I changed my attitude and my habits and decided to live out the principles of this movement."
At present it is still not clear whether Straight Edge will continue to develop into a promising movement of the future. However, one thing is certain: we are dealing with a trend that is proving that a healthier life style. among the young people is possible.

Several months after returning from Normandy, Congel announced that not a drop of fossil fuel would be used in the making of Destiny. Almost overnight the mission of the project changed. It went from the mall that could save the depressed economy of Syracuse to the mall that could save America by establishing a new model for green commercial development. But will shoppers actually want to travel from far and wide to a little known city' s eco-friendly mall? And even with the green tax benefits, it is vastly more expensive to power Destiny with renewable sources than with conventional grid energy--so where' s the financial logic?
Here' s where Congel' s schemes to create "monster profits" come in. Intel, Clear Channel, Cisco, Sony and Microsoft are among the brands that Destiny has recruited to supply its retail, entertainment, security and energy technologies. Many suppliers are planning to build local offices that will aid the Syracuse economy, and all have agreed to participate in the on-site development of new technologies that could be tested on the captive audience of mall-goers. (Congel will be a co-owner of the patents on all inventions.) A group of companies hopes to perfect a new wireless radio frequency identification technology to enable customers to purchase items instantly without waiting in line. The Department of Homeland Security and A.D.T., a home security company, have discussed testing new devices that will track all visitors entering and leaving the mall.

B.is a little idealistic but a real and rich business man
C.indulges himself in environmental protection
D.has been harboring the plan since he was a young man
