The market for manufactured goods is what economists call "imperfect," because each compan
y has its own style, its own reputation, and its own locations; and all of the arts of advertisement and salesmanship are devoted to making it even more imperfect by attracting buyers to particular brand names. Even small businesses that depend upon outside channels of retail distribution may have the final say in what prices they will charge, and great corporations can differentiate their goods in order to create demand of them.

In this type of market, supply normally is very elastic--that is responsive to demand--in the short run. Stocks or inventories are held at some point in the chain of distribution; while stocks are running down or building up, there is time to change the level of production, and once a price has been set, it is rarely altered in response to moderate changes in demand. Even in a deep slump, defensive rings may be formed to prevent price cutting.

In the long run, as well as in the short, supply is responsive to demand in the market for manufactures. It is easier to change the composition of a firm's output than it is to change the production of a mine or a plantation. And when changes in demand are not too rapid, gross profits from one plant can be siphoned off and invested in something quite different. When business is good, moreover, there is continual new investment so that productive capacity is adapted to meeting changing requirements. Workers themselves may not even be aware of changes in the final commodities to which their work contributes, and the level of wages for any grade of factory labour is very little affected by the fortunes of a particular market.

The "imperfection" of the market for manufactured goods is reflected in all of the following aspects, except ______.

A.the distinctive style. of each company

B.the attempts of advertisement to attract buyers to particular brand names

C.tendency for the prices of the same goods to equalize quickly

D.the freedom of small businesses to decide the prices they will charge

Green Spaces in citiesWhere do children play Years ago, any open field, any vacant lot, aGreen Spaces in cities Where do children play Years ago, any open field, any vacant lot, any group pf trees--these were the places where children played. As families left family farms, small towns, and the countryside, and moved into cities, the places for their children to play in became rarer. Children in the cities had few options, fewer choices of places to play. In fact, all people’s lives change a lot when they move to the city. ()

Dollars and cents are the basic units of American money. The back of all dollar bills are
green (hence "greenbacks"). The commonly used coins are: one cent (penny), five cents (nickel), 10 cents (dime), and 25 cents (quarter). 50 pieces (half dollar) and silver dollars (not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage, while there has been talk of phasing out the penny--that's inflation for you. "Always carry plenty of quarters when travelling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc."

There is generally no problem in using US dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse.

It's useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not cary large sums of cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travellers' cheques which can be purchased both in the US and abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook travellers' cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at some car rental companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There's no need to cash them at a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar cheques are accepted like this almost always and you'll be given change just as though you'd presented the cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I.D. when you cash your cheques.

Credit cards can be even more valuable than travellers' cheques, as they are often used to guarantee room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car--indeed without a credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel purposes--you should ask your bank manager.

Why is it useful to carry enough 25-cent coins with you?

A.They can act as small change for the exact bus fares.

B.There is generally no problem in using them in Canada.

C.As a basic unit of money, they are gradually gaining in usage.

D.They may come in handy for pay phones or laundry machines.

The purpose of the physical examination is to identify physical signs of diseases. The significance of these objective indications of diseases is enhanced when they confirm a functional or structural change already suggested by the patient’s history. At times, however, physical signs may be the only evidence of a disease. The physical examination should be methodical and thorough, with consideration given to the patient’s comfort and dignity. Although attention is often directed by the history to the diseased organ or part of the body, the examination of a new patient must extend from head to toe in an objective search for abnormalities. Unless the physical examination is systematic and is performed consistently from patient to patient, important segments may be omitted inadvertently. The results of the examination, like the details of the history, should be recorded at the time they are elicited -- not hours later, when they are subject to the distortions of memory. Skill in physical diagnosis is acquired with experience, but it is not merely the technique that determines success in eliciting signs of a disease. The detection of a few scattered petechiae, a faint diastolic murmur, or a small mass in the abdomen is not a question of keener eyes and ears or more sensitive fingers, but of a mind alert to those findings. Because physical findings can change with time, the physical examination should be repeated as frequently as the clinical situation warrants.

听力原文: There are so many things going on in our modern lives, and change happens so quickly. It is hard to imagine a time when things were slower and you could really see a new thing come into your life and to remember the day or the year when those things happened. I know that today, for example, there, are many instances of second and third generations of things, such as televisions or radios, when some of us were not even aware that there was a first generation.

A friend of mine was born at the end of the last century, and talking to her, I really got a sense of her being a living history book, of being able to talk about the changes in her own life and to know that these changes were really the changes that society was going through.

She gets really excited, for example, when she talks about the first time she ever saw a camera, and even more excited when she saw herself in the picture that the photographer took. She lived in a small town, and at the time that she was very young, there were no cars or trains in her town at all. As she grew up, cars and trains came in, and she remembers her first ride with a real sense of amazement that any one count move so fast.

(30)

A.It's amazing that anyone could move so fast.

B.Televisions mark the beginning of modem life.

C.Modern life is changing very fast.

D.It's hard to remember the past.

第10题
Rocks which have solidified directly from molten materials are called igneous rocks. Igneo
us rocks are commonly referred to as primary rocks because they are the original source of material found in sedimentaries and metamorphics. Igneous rocks compose the greater part of the earth's crust, but they are generally covered at the surface by a relatively thin layer of sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. Igneous rocks are distinguished by the following characteristics: (1) they contain no fossils; (2) they have no regular arrangement of layers; and (3) they are nearly always made up of crystals.

Sedimentary rocks are composed largely of minute fragments derived from the disintegration of existing rocks and in some instances from the remains of animals. As sediments are transported, individual fragments are assorted according to size. Distinct layers of such sediments as gravels, sand, and clay build up, as they are deposited by water and occasionally wind. These sediments vary in size with the material and the power of the eroding agent. Sedimentary materials are laid clown in layers called strata.

When sediments harden into sedimentary rocks, the names applied to them change to indicate the change in physical state. Thus, small stones and gravel cemented together are known as conglomerates; cemented sand becomes sandstone; and hardened clay becomes shale. In addition to these, other sedimentary rocks such as limestone frequently result from the deposition of dissolved material. The ingredient parts are normally precipitated by organic substances, such as shells of clams or hard skeletons of other marine life.

Both igneous and sedimentary rocks may be changed by pressure, heat, solution, or cementing action. When individual grains from existing rocks tend to deform. and interlock, they are called metamorphic rocks. For example, granite, an igneous rock, may be metamorphosed into a gneiss or a schist. Limestone, a sedimentary rock, when subjected to heat and pressure may become marble, a metamorphic rock. Shale under pressure becomes slate.

Which one of the following is a metamorphic rock?

A.Granite.

B.Shale.

C.Slate.

D.Limestone.
