Passage 2

(78) Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other peoples. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught—to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle—compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other Children if he wants it, what his word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells that he can't find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated per- sons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

In the past several years, much has been written about suicides(自杀) and their connection to high unemployment rates in Japan. Dire statistics show that in the years since 1998, Japan's suicide numbers have topped (居于……最高) the 30,000 mark (标记) annually.

Newsweek and Time magazines have both covered the phenomenon, and each time one of the regular Japanese language newspapers comes out with a higher unemployment figure, they tie them together with the growing suicide problem, and with a great deal of justification(理由).

There is an unhappy little spot near the base of Mount Fuji called the Aokigahara woods which happens to be one of the most infamous places in Japan for suicidal people to do themselves in. According to figures released by the Fuji-Yoshida police station in Yamanashi Prefecture this year, approximately 78 suspected suicide victims were found hanging from the trees, an increase from the former record of 73 found back in 1998.

Statistics from the World Health Organization show that the majority of suicide victims are males from age 40 to the mid-60s. Many of these men committed suicide because of a feeling of dishonoring the family name. Others simply watched their companies let them go after years of devoted work, and couldn't find gainful employment because of their age.

What was connected to suicides in Japan in the past several years?

A.An unhappy spot.

B.High unemployment rates.

C.A feeling of dishonoring the family name.

D.An unhappy marriage.

Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: (78)The advantages and d

Passage 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

(78)The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists(经济学家). It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population,: inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively, Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unlessthere is a big demand to justify them.

One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial developmentand the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. (79)When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or itt decline.

6. A smaller population may mean__________.

A. higher productivity, but a lower average income

B. lower productivity, but a higher average income

C. lower productivity, and a lower average income

D. higher productivity, and a higher average income

More attention was paid to the quality of production in France at the time of Rene Coty. Charles Deschanel was then the financial minister. He stressed that workmanship and quality were more important than quantity for industrial production. It would be necessary to produce quality goods for the international market to compete with those produced in other countries. The French economy needed a large share of the international market to balance its import and export trade.

French industrial and agricultural production was still inadequate to meet the immediate needs of the people, let alone long-ranged developments. Essential imports had stretched the national credit to the breaking point. Rents were tightly controlled, but the extreme inflation affected general population most severely through the cost of food. Food costs took as much as 80 percent of the workers' income. Wages, it is tree, had risen. Extensive family allowances and benefits were paid by the state, and there was full-time and overtime employment. Taken together, these factors enabled the working class to exist but allowed them no sense of security. In this unstable and discouraging situation, workmen were willing to work overseas for higher wages.

The government was reluctant to let workers leave the country. It was feared this migration of workers would exhaust the labor force. The lack of qualified workers might hinder the improvement in the quality of industrial products produced. Qualified workers employed abroad would only increase the quantity of quality goods produced in foreign countries. Also the quantity of quality goods produced in France would not be able to increase as part of its qualified labor force moved to other countries.

According to the passage, the French workers were ______.

A.better paid than the workers in any other European country

B.able to save more money with the increase in his wages

C.anxious to work abroad

D.often unable to find work in France

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like what other people say. In the same way, when children learn to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught, to work, run, climb, whistle, or ride a bicycle. They compare those performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his own mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not. If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find a way to get the right answer. Let' s end this nonsense of grades, exams and marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, that is, how to measure their own understanding and how to know what they know or do not know. Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one' s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, "But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get in the world? Don' t worry ! If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it."

What does the author think is the best way for children to learn things ?

A.By making mistakes and having them pointed out by others.

B.By having their mistakes corrected.

C.By noticing their problems and making changes.

D.By listening to explanations from skilled people.
