•Read the article below about success in the business world.

•Choose the best word to fill in each gap.

•For each question 21-30, mark one letter A, B, C or D.

According to certain beer commercials, the contemporary version of success consists in moving up to a premium brand that costs a dime or so more per bottle. Credit-card companies would have you (21) success inheres in owning their particular piece of plastic.

Under the flag of success, modern-style, liberal arts colleges are withering (22) business schools are burgeoning... and yet even business schools are having an increasingly hard time finding faculty members, because teaching isn't (23) "successful" enough. Amid a broad consensus that there is a glut of lawyers and an epidemic of strangling litigation, record numbers of young people continue to flock to law school (24) , for the individual practitioner, a law degree is still considered a safe ticket.

Many, by external standards, will be "successes". Yet there is a deadening and dangerous flaw in their philosophy: It has little room, little sympathy and less respect for the noble failure, for the person who (25) past the limits, who aims gloriously high and falls unashamedly (26) .

That sort of ambition doesn't have much place in a world where success is proved by worldly reward (27) by accomplishment itself. That sort of ambition is increasingly thought of as the domain of irredeemable eccentrics, of people who haven't quite caught on—and there is great social pressure not to be one of them.

The irony is that today's success-chasers seem obsessed with the idea of not settling. Yet in doggedly (28) the rather brittle species of success now in fashion, they are restricting themselves to a chokingly narrow swath of turf along the entire (29) of human possibilities. Does it ever (30) to them that, frequently, success is what people settle for when they can't think of something noble enough to be worth tailing at?

Career Change

A. People who are thinking about changing careers are often afraid of what will happen if they quit their job. Will they find another one? Will they like another field as well as the one they are in now? Will they be able to grow and advance in a new organization?

B. As these questions come to mind, they should try to figure out the answers so they can reach a decision. Although there is a high rate of unemployment in some countries, there are usually jobs for skill ed workers who ca use computers or other equipment. Those who have specialized training in these areas can generally find a position without too much effort.

C .The question of whether they' II like another field more than their current one is also a crucial one. While it' s nice to dream about having another job , the reality may be that they aren't suited for it. For example , if an architect likes to cook but has no idea about how to run a business , it may be risky for him to open a restaurant. He can cook for his friends on weekends and satisfy his dreams of being a chef in that way.

D. Another good way for a person to find out if she will be successful in a new field is to try it out as a part-time job. Being an event planner sounds glamorous but helping friends with parties or weddings might show her that it also very stressful. However, if she has the creativity and organization necessary for such a position , she can continue to plan events for friends until she builds up a reputation. Then she can leave her current job to look for a job in event planning knowing that she' ll be successful in this area.

E. Once a person has found his or her specialty and decides on the change , it' s necessary to stick with it until the business gets off the ground. This usually takes about five years. If the move has been from one company to another, the person should stay until it is clear he is doing a good job and can advance to a higher position. Following this advice will make the transition smoother and the career change successful.

For each question , choose the best answer based on the reading sage. Write A , B , C or D on your Answer Sheet.

Have you wished for a magic pill or magic formula that would let you live happily forever? If you have, don’t feel alone! It’s a very common, natural wish that has a long history.Spanish explorers of the sixteenth century even tried to find a fountain of youth in what is now the state of Florida. The water the this legendary fountain, which no one has yet found, was believed to restore youth and good health to those who drank it.

Biologists today don’t expect that anyone will find a magical fountain of youth.Growing older is a natural part of the life cycle that can’t be reversed. As human beings grow older, organs such as the heart and lungs may stop functioning properly.Sight and hearing may become weak. And the human body becomes more likely to come down with serious illnesses from which it cannot recover.

Considered together, changes that bring about the decline of an organism are called aging.Because of aging, many biologists believe that there may be a maximum age limit to which even the healthiest organisms can live. For human beings, this maximum age limit is about 110 years.

Perhaps the most important thing that you can learn from your study of human biology is that you have a lot of control over the aging process in your own life.In fact, within our control are many physical and mental factors that have much to do with aging. For example, each of us, as recent research indicates, can do many things to help prevent heart and vessel disease, which causes half the death each year in the United States. We can avoid eating a lot of fatty meat.Eating too much of these types of animal fats can lead to the clogging and hardening of blood vessels. We can cut back on smoking and hopefully quit entirely. We can limit the amount of alcohol we drink and the amount of sugar we eat.We can exercise regularly and strengthen the heart and other organs. And we can remember to take time out each day for ourselves, time just relax.Exercise, recreation and relaxation all reduce stress – inner tension that is hard on all body organs.

One final thing we can do is to try to keep aware of advances made in health education.Information is often available free of charge from health clinics or schools.

4.We can slow down the weakening of all our body organs by ______.

A.not eating animal fat

B.limiting drinking and smoking

C.exercise, recreation and relaxation to reduce stress

D.preventing the clogging and hardening of blood vessels

5.Besides physical and mental factors, which of the following also contributes to living a long and healthy life according tot the passage?
