"Freshman fifteen" is a term which means fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms— the wei
ght students might expect to gain in their first year of college. People used to talk about the "freshman ten." Before that, it was the "freshman five." Are freshman more inflated, or just the expression? The fact is, many young men and women do put on extra weight when they start college. Some schools that have done research on the issue including Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks, the equivalent of two kilograms. If weight gain continues at this rate, how long before they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year. The next question is, why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. One is poor diet: College students often eat foods high in fat and sugar and starch with no parents around to say no to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just ... busy. In any case, those who miss meals are more likely to overeat when they do have food. Also, freshmen often use food to put their mind at ease. They have college pressures to deal with. Not only that, many are living away from home for the first time. Another reason college students gain weight is that they often do not get enough exercise. Finally, there is something else that can add up to the "freshman five" or ten or fifteen, alcohol. Alcohol is high in calories and this is especially true of beer. And, no, freshmen are not supposed to be drinking, not unless they are twenty-one, the legal drinking age in America. For many college students, the extra weight they put on in their freshman year can be as hard to escape as term papers and final exams.

Paragraph 1 is centered on______.

A.why freshmen put on weight in college

B.why freshmen worry about their weight

C.how the "freshman fifteen" gets its name

D.how the "freshman fifteen" amazes freshmen

1. Introduce who you want to talk about This could include name/age/identity/ relationship with you e.g. I'm going to tell you sth about my bosom friend Jay, who is at the same age as me. We are both college freshmen and he is my roommate. He was the first person I knew in college and we are sworn friends to each other. We always hang out together, sometimes playing ball games at the court, sometimes pigging out at restaurants. I would say we are almost joined at the hip. 2. Introduce what kind of person he\she is (supported by examples and details) This could include appearance/ personality etc. e.g. Jay impresses most people as a careless and easy-going person. He is such a sleepy-head that he always storms into the classroom at the sound of the bell, with a bed head and sleepy eyes. 3. Introduce how you feel about this person This could include what you like or dislike about this person e.g. To me, Jay is really an agreeable person. As a friend, he is supportive and trustworthy. He is more mature-minded than me. That's why he always counsels and consoles me. 4. Closing sentences e.g. If you ask me who my best friend is, I would not think twice before saying his name.

听力原文: It was in 1951, during my first week at North Carolina College, a black school, the English chairman's wife, who was as light as a white woman, stopped me one day in the ball.

When I went to her office, she said, "You had the highest grade on the examination." She was talking about the exam that the entire freshman class took. In spite of her smile, her eyes and tone of voice said, "How could this blackskinned girl score higher on the test than the other students? It must be a mistake.' At North Carolina College, color was used in deciding status. The faculty assumed that lightskinned students were more intelligent, and they were always a bit surprised when a darkskinned student did well, especially if she was a girl.

When the grades for the first quarter come out, I had the highest average in the freshmen class. The chairman's wife called me into her office again, pulled out a copy of the freshman English final exam, and asked me to retake it. I couldn't believe it. It was so incredible to her that I had the highest score in the class that she was trying to test me again. I felt angry, so intense that I wanted to start hitting her. I have seldom hated anyone so deeply. I handed the exam paper back to her and walked out.
